OPEN THREAD - NCAA Tournament Thursday Afternoon Session
Per reddit collegebasketball, this is a list of the games today
It feels like a football Saturday.
Man, I love this. Took two days off to enjoy the National Holiday(s) known as Opening Round of the NCAA Tournament....March Madness begins.
GO BLUE! (Go Valpo, coming up first!)
Tough choice: Do I root against Sparty because, well, seeing Sparty burn more couches would be fun (especially after investing all that money in that second-hand furniture store in E.Lansing)? Then again, do I root for them to win so that the B1G proves itself as the best conference this year? Awww, f--k it. Go Crusaders!
What if they lose and burn the arena down? What then?
I root for MSU now. I'd rather see them lose to Duke or Louisville.
I'm rooting for Sparty. I want B1G teams to plow through the tournament.
I'm rooting for the best of both worlds: Sparty loses this Saturday, but it ends up being an all-Big-Ten Final Four.
Win or lose they'll probably burn something. So you're set.
Msu, bucknell, pitt, saint louis, and st. marys in the early games
going to be wasted all day and watch Trey dominate.
Some cat this morning on ESPN was talking about how Burke could put on a Kemba Walker-esque performance in the tourney and just put the team on his back.
Jimmy Dykes. And I am hoping to find that bandwagon and ride it all the way to the Final Four
God I'm all tingly like I get before football games.
much more entertaining than the TV pregame shows
- live from Simmons house
Because he always is. Two amazing notes from that session:
1) His admission that we win the '93 title if that game is not in New Orleans.
2) The dice game in Detroit where he wins 5 grand and then buys a Honda Accord.
The dice game made me a bit uncomfortable.
What, because of the transparent ability for it to be used to transfer money to players illegally?
Statute of limitations is up, so whatever. Jalen entertains me a ton.
Any statistics on work productivity in the us today compared to a normal Thursday? Must be a noticeable difference.
Random question: Did anyone else cry during the "One Shining Moment" segment after the Webber Timeout fiasco? Yeah, uh, me neither.
"I will never forget where I was" moments.
At work until 3:30pm. Will be cracking a Jolly Pumpkin Madrugada Obscura during the game tonight.
Very nice! I enjoyed an Aventineus last night for a bad Red Wings/LaSalle game last night. Not sure the plan for tonight. I do have a Weizen Bam in the cellar...
Verne doing the MSU game. Which SEC team is playing
Because the SEC is now a Mid-Major, they decided to let Verne out of his cage for more than his usual standard fare.
Being a grown up and having to work instead of drink beers and watch games is REALLY COOL, GUYS. You should totally graduate on time and think of your future.
That's why they invented GRAD SCHOOL. One more year to do exactly what you said (drink beers and watch games).
Congratulations on not having any money. I'm sure mom and dad don't mind piggybacking you.
You seem a little eager to get your middle-aged-complacency groove on.
His Dudeness is saying he does have a job and supports himself, and hence isn't able to enjoy the games and drink beer all day. Like most of us, I assume he's staring down decades of uninspiring work for this or that company.
I do have a job that i am at right now.
LOL at me piggybacking from them. I will be paying back the WORST generations debts for a long long time. I love my parents, but their generation has basically lived high on the hog and driven the country into a horrible debt hole.
Cool story though about the piggybacking thing.
@the Glove: no man, that's wha FAFSA is for. Don't just assume grad students are living on their parents dime. As Coach Hoke said, you know what assuming does to you...
@Sambojangles: you're doing it all wrong, man. Grad School is but one year, Law School is three. That's called winning.
Valpo can not afford to give state 3 shots on each possesion.
..but then if State continues to miss the first two out of every three like they seem to be now, I have a good feeling about Valpo staying in this one for a while anyway. After all, Tennessee outrebounded Mercer by a 2:1 margin and still lost.
Rebounding iz hard
Tom upsett? Oh my... Something new
LOL Derrick Nix
Valpo can't compete on the boards and state can't make a shot. I have state advancing but I won't lie a Valpo win wouldn't ruin my day.
I have in one bracket msu in the final four and in the other losing to valpo. So I can't lose really.
I like Valpo's energy
Man I really wish I bought a Valpo shirt to show my hatred of State. Oh wait, no I don't...I'm not a loser.
Is anyone else having trouble with CbsSports.com? It won't show more than 5 seconds of the game without jumping back into commercials.
I can't get the games to load at all. Figured it was because I'm at work, though.
No that's actually how CBS broadcasts basketball games, especially in March
If Valpo can tighten up a bit on the boards, this could be an ok game.
Anyone got a non-CBS Stream I can try of MSU game? It's not working on my work CPU for some reason...
Bucknell over Butler seemed to be a popular upset pick how did all of you pick that game. I took Butler.
I have that whole section as upsets. Bucknell & Davidson (so Bucknell to 16). This is my only area of the brackets that I took huge upsets
I'll be at work wishing I was at home so I could drink that rack of <obscure micro brew that some of you have tried> and watch Staee win another ugly game. Ugh. Enjoy!
...there is nothing quite like a wonderful tasting obscure microbrew, you gotta try it!
At this point any "micro brew" that is legitimately obscure most assuredly does NOT come in racks.
I am starting to think that Valpo and Michigan State should have had the court professionally surveyed before the game in the event they had trouble locating the basket. Neither team is sniffing 30% shooting right now.
I think we'll see a lot of this today in most of the games. Pretty typical for an 18-22 year old to be a little nervous and tight in the first round of the NCAAs... Seems like this is the case in the first round every year; especially in the first half.
Charles Barkley, I would be all-in for Valpo. Now I'm conflicted about this. I might need to root harder for the other 6 B1G schools and root against Sparty.
Anyone else have no idea what this is referencing?
He was saying the same thing that other fools have said the past few days that the B1G is overrated.
wow, msu looks surprisingly bad...i have mixed feelings about that since i do want the big to do well this year in the tourney
Cox Communications in Phoenix is having issues... CBS HD is offline... /fantastic
Bah CBS, how am I supposed to watch basketball during lecture if the screen won't get past the loading circle spinning around?
EDIT: Crisis averted, it works in Chrome.
Agreed. How can they be surprised by the traffic? Seems they screw it up every year, but it's particularly bad now.
State turning it on a little bit here. 8-0 run
yeah, gary harris started that with a nice open three hit in rhythm. while i don't want to believe it, he is really good
I am hoping both him and Payne go pro after this year, to make Michigan's sweep of them easier next year.
Verne is drunk!
No doubt; could we get a pair of announcers more out of touch and geriatric? "Harris getting his puppies organized..." Really?
BTW CBS stream working famously in Montana.
"What's the best show on TruTV the other 51 weeks?" - John Gasaway on ESPN chat. Really, what is good on that station. I don't get it on my cable plan.
World's Dumbest can be pretty funny, though you put yourself at the risk of hearing Tonya Harding speak.
Valpo looks like us in the first game against msu. Bad.
I'm shocked! SHOCKED! that MSU is going to hammer Valpo. The Big 10 is going to have a really nice first round. We'll see after that, but I think the conference is unbeaten through tomorrow night.
Valpo getting blowed out
These games are boring.
Much as I love me some Sparty schadenfreude, I do hope this is just the start of the B1G beating the piss out of everybody.
Oddly, I rarely feel that way when it comes to football...
man, valpo cannot buy a made basket.
To Butler and Bucknell!
Holy white people, batman
Yikes. The Crusaders are 4-22 and 1-10 from downtown. That makes for an effective FG% of 20.5%. At that rate, they could still potentially break 30 points before the game ends. Those six TOs hurt quite a bit right now, I would say.
EDIT: Make that 7 TOs, but the two 3-pointers up the Crusaders' effective FG% to 31.3%.
So maybe the Big Ten really is the best conference in the country...
Valpo is supposed to be a decent team; they are getting manhandled by MSU.
Correct me if I am wrong but you get 7 timeouts for the whole game correct? Not that I blame him, but the Valpo coach is burning through those timeouts in the first half.
Only 5. You lose one after half if you don't use it.
I'm looking at this game and hoping that Michigan going through the gauntlet that is the Big Ten will serve them just as well as it is MSU right now. Can only serve to your advantage that you face top competition week in and week out.
Valparaiso is supposed to be a decent team and they're getting completely outclassed right now.
anyone ever hit the boss button on the live stream and actually read the various messages in the inbox? I just did for the first time out of curiosity and they are rather amusing and comical. Everyone loves this time of year.
Soon as I've got everyone awake and stuff we're going to start the liveblog. Probably 4-ish. Who wants to moderate (any part of the day?) Email me.
Also the sponsor (Draft Street) is hosting another free game if anyone wants to jump in and draft early: http://www.draftstreet.com/l/cbb_gen.aspx?AID=729&pid=163&subid=March+CBBfreeroll
I think Stu was an underrated defender as well.
This. Stu always guarded the opposing team's best guard. And he did it well.
What sucks is we know they can play that level of defense...They played against this very Sparty team. They don't do it as fluid and as consistent though. To make a run in this Tourney they'll need to buckle down like they did in the aforementioned game.
Bucknell-Butler is 21-14 at halftime. And that is the MORE interesting game.
MSU is putting on a clinic.
Nix is scoring but he looks so f--king unathletic out there. Watching him run is painful.
I don't think what he does can be called running.
Please tell me you didn't just put Nix in the same sentence with Arnie Palmer, Rick Barry, and Terry Bradshaw. I get your point, but please never, ever do that again.
This is what a curb stomping looks like.
Michigan State broke the lead-size graph on the video player
Can my work Determine if I'm watching the tourney from their IT logs? My guess is yes, but is that only if they look into it, or can/ is it likely they can get an email saying that persons x, y, and z are watching the NCAA tourney at work during work hours?
It's probably more like, persons a, b, c, d, e, f, g...... are watching the NCAA tourney. What can they do about it at this point? Is this a surprise to them? I certainly hope not.
I was wondering if my boss was notified as opposed to being proactively notified.
Depends on what kind of security your company is running.
My friend worked at a company that logged whenever he would leave his desk to use the bathroom. And if he was away from his desk more than 10 min an email would be sent to his manager.
I think companies are required to let you know if that kind of monitoring/reporting is being done.
...are simply dominating, hopefully Michigan has a healthy rotation of bigs tonight...Win the rebounds and win the game!
Does a big like Nix fit into Beilien's offense?
probably not, but then again there's not much that Nix can fit into
Oh, Gottlieb is announcing...great.
Actual image of Florida Gulf Coast dormitories
I would go to class everyday.
I can't believe I turned down a full-ride there to go to UM...ugh!!
Uh, just buy the place someday.
My parents live nearby FGCU. I'm pretty sure that's a man-made lake versus, say, the Gulf of Mexico. But, still, yeah...lawn chairs, sand, water, palm trees, and lots o' sunshine = much different dorm experience compared to Markley Hall. Not better. Just different!
Doing what good teams do,blow out inferior opponents.I'm impressed with how they came out strong in 2nd half even tho they already had a large lead. That's what Mich is capable of doing tonite but I'm not sure we will.
The offensive rebounding percentages to this point in the Valpo-MSU game:
Valparaiso - 9.1%
Michigan State - 59.3%
So, yeah. However, the Crusaders are narrowing the gap some in terms of effective FG% - now 36.5% to 46.1%
Is anyone else seeing the $#!tshow that is the shooting of the Bucknell-Butler game? 0-13 from 3 point combined. Wow
pretty sure I could hit an occasional 3 can I go to school for free?
You have to hit 9/10
Well from the top of the key everyone in college can make 9 of 10
P-I-T-T, LETS GO PITT!
I am still in shock every time I look at the East bracket. It is a joke. Weakest 3 and 6 seeds by far. Weakest 4 seed. One of the weakest #2 seeds.
Good run by Bucknell to get them back within 3 after being down double-digits...
Edit: Now up to a 4 point lead, hitting ALL THE SHOTS. I thought this game was going to be one of the better ones of the day. We'll see how this one finishes, could be a good one.
this Butler-Bucknell game's about as fun as watching Wisconsin play Wisconsin
I get it's not quite a blockbuster game (though I'm enjoying it!) but Wisconsin v. Wisconsin is an uncomparable game...I'm talking it'd take a 4th grade girls School of the Blind, basketball game, to get to a Wisc. v. Wisc.-esque basketball game,.
Takes the lead
Annnnnnnd Butler takes it right back. These games are precisely the reason that the Tournament is awesome.
I read that Wichita State's coach was previously at Winthrop. Would moving from there to Wichita State be an upward career move? Maybe more money but is it also a more prestigious position?
I know they used to have great baseball teams and I believe they put a lot of fans in their building when they have a good bball team.
Yes. Way better conference that usually gets and at large bid each year.
Wichita State has had some nice success the past few years, and in the tournament as well.
too little too late...Would have been nice though.
did anyone see that dude who plays for new mexico state..that guy is listed at 7-5
Let's go Butler! Don't jack my bracket up in the second game!
Bucknell, make a damn comeback now!
Another question: If a guy tips a missed shot back to his teammate, who gets the rebound? The guy who purposely tipped it or the guy who caught the tip-back?
I doubt tipping the ball constitutes possesion so I'd say no so the guy who ends up with the ball gets credit for the rebound.LSA is good with official stats,he'll clear it up.
I believe it is the guy who finally secures the rebound (not the guy who tipped it).
What if someone tips in a missed shot? Does that count as a rebound and a FG or just a FG?
I think it's both. Have you ever seen a big guy essentially play volleyball with him self under the hoop and they make a comment about 3 offensive rebounds and he makes a fg on the third tip?
Yep in that case his rebounding numbers go up but his FG% goes down.
is slowly, but surely, pulling away.
really gonna screw me up
I believe I have Pitt upsetting Gonzaga.
Ditto. I mean, somebody has to do it. I just couldn't stand letting Gonzaga advance in my brackets.
No way that is a flagrant in the Pitt Wichita St game.
Is that even a foul?
It was always going to be hard for Bucknell to win their game against Butler especially if Muscala had an off game.
Anyone at the Palace? Curious how many Staee fans are hanging around after their victory.
If you're thinking they will be around for the Michigan/SDSU game, I'm not so sure. The lower bowl gets cleared between sessions so the MSU fans would've had to buy tickets for both sessions and that's a big commitment just to root against another school.
The upper deck, if I'm not mistaken, can be there the whole time. So there will likely be the MSU stragglers up there wearing their SDSU gear they paid $70+ to have shipped overnight here.
They did buy Jackrabbit t-shirts and had them overnighted...it'd be such a shame for that investment to go to waste.
The people who bought their tickets before the brackets were announced bought tickets for both sessions as the Michigan game assuming that they ended up in Auburn Hills could have been in either session. Since tickets were still available for direct purchase for individual sessions, there was not too much demand for them to be able to sell their afternoon session tickets on the secondary market. As a result a few of my friends (Michigan fans) went to watch the games in both sessions.
I hope Pitt doesn't continue their atrocious shooting from the first half. Yuck. Got them advancing over Witchita St.
Watching NMSU's center run is more painful than watching Derrick nix run.
Go St. Mary's!
St Mary's needs to make a shot!
I HAVE A PERFECT BRACKET.
I AM PERFECT.
Eff yo' couch!
...with this pic (well, obviously offend a little bit), but it looks like he has FAS:
WHAT IS THE HELL IS A BILLIKEN!?
"Charm doll created by an art teacher in St.Louis" per wikipedia. That question comes up every year lol
"It was originally created in 1908 by the Craftsman's Guild in Highland Park Illinois. It seems to be based directly on the Japanese "Piriken or "Pilliken" of Osaka. The Piriken or Pilliken is something who has a box of money offerings in front of him. Those who offer a coin will have their wish granted if they kiss his upturned feet. The base of the plaster figure is inscribed, "Biliken - the god of things as they ought to be"
My 7 year old wanted to know who the team was that had the Grinch as a mascot.
I figured if any team wasn't going to crash the boards against Pitt in the tourney it was wee wittle Wichita State. They're winning the OREB battle 6-2
Could somebody step up and agree to help moderate the liveblog this p.m. (starting in an hour) or just be the scoreboard man? I need a couple more and my boss is getting mad at me for not watching enough basketball today.
I'd love to help but I'm pressing my luck by simply working from the conference room this afternoon . . .
do you guys have to work on a High Holy Day?
I can try to do it - What would it involve?
Just approving non-trolling comments. Sometimes you can reply to them too. One guy I want to just be updating the scores.
To the other guy -- because a liveblog is more fun than an open thread.
Just curious, why is it starting so early?
Is the Wisconsin of the Big East but with more muscle.
Boss left at noon today, said he is leaving at noon tomorrow. This is good, very good.
Is anyone else seeing the Pitt/Witchita St. game? Witchita St. is shooting 30.3% and Pitt is shooting 29% and the teams are a combined 2-26 from long range. Pitt really is the 'Wisconisn' of the East.
You're playing against pogo sticks, St. Mary's. Pump fake down low and watch jockstraps fall down to the floor.
Otherwise, St. Mary's is displaying grit and an inability to make shots.
St Mary's is my first upset pick of the day. Hoping they can start making some more open shots.
Mine too. Hopefully the Gaels get it going.
Interesting calls going Wichita's way thus far.
I don't think I predicted this St. Mary's upset right...
Davidson is my big upset pick. Hope they can keep this going.
If St. Mary's doesn't make a comeback I will miss out on a perfect bracket. I love March Madness. I haven't accomplished a single thing since lunch.
F--- U PITT. Turn it around or I'm going to screen and ignore your phone calls looking for me to donate money to you. Wait, I do that already. <thinks of different punishment>
As I told my sister (a pitt alum), "hahahahaha"
/still bitter from years ago when I had pitt winning it
Ohhh my. You'd be crazy to ever pick Pitt to win it. I dont't think they've ever been past the elite eight.
I know this now, which is why I always have my sister in my pool, she picks pitt to win every year
I also have Davidson and Witchita State
Just when you think you can use Pitt's reliable tournament history for your upset pick, they go and do this....
To be fair, Pitts reliable tournament history is choking.
/still had them winning today at least :(
And all these burgh people i work with had them going down. My genius is suffering
My coin flip bracket is pretty much screwed at this point; guess the randomness of the universe didn't realize Valpo was a good choice to win it all.
On the other hand, the "Wife, I'm going to read two team names out and then you choose one" bracket is still perfect and still looking good so far...
I did something similar with my 6 year old. He's doing alright for now but he has Gonzaga and Kansas falling in the "second" round and Albany in his final four.
in about 15 mins. My bracket is busted with Pitt almost assuredly going down.
Atta girl Wichita State.
Heheheh. You'd think you guys would 've learned by now...Pitt is an awful tournament team. I think it was two years ago they blew it as a #1 seed in the 2nd round.
Chronic tournament underachiever. Another painful loss for them, even earlier than usual. With a move to the ACC and the fact that Pitt has invested heavily in their basketball program (leveling their football field for the basketball arena), I wonder if Jamie Dixon is out? At the very least, he must be on the very hot seat, right?
Rumour has it he is leaving to take the head job at USC.
Funnier part of that rumor has Ben Howland going back to Pitt to replace him.
The Shockers "shock the..." well not really the world but they have me 3-0. Come on St. Mary's!!
Davidson with the lead at half! Keep it up!
What a pretty 3 point shot by St. Mary's.
There was no way Florida and Marquette should have got 3 seeds ahead of us - Them losing early might show the committee the error of their ways.
Neither learn from the 'errors of their ways."
1st time all day no game action til Memphis-St.Mary commercial over
Has anyone found a good international stream yet? Thankfully the Michigan game is on CBS, so that won't be an issue, but I'm definitely missing out on some crucial action for the rest of the day.
EAT SHIT PITT
Liveblog now open. http://mgoblog.com/content/basketballgasm-2013-liveblog-dancing-all-day-long
Pitt is my only loss so far, but i never put them past the round of 62 because they are terrible in the tourny.
Southern's beating Gonzaga!
PLEASE LET THIS HAPPEN!
No good...no good...no good :(
Memphis got a good scare
TV Teddy on the Gonzaga game.
Davidson breaking my balls...I know this is gonna end badly.
Holy shit this Marquette game is good.
looked way too easy.
Oh wow, that looks fucking familiar. Pissed a 5 point game away with less than a minute. Fuck you Davidson.
Wow. Thank you Marquette. Now you can go and lose to Butler!
Thank you much for the implosion, Davidson.
Yep. That's my bracket
in exchange for a Gonzaga loss. Go Southern
I'm begining to think when a team is in Davidson's position (up 7 or so under 1:30) they're better off fouling than allowing an opponent to hit three 3's in last 90 seconds, turn the game literally into a FT shooting contest.Hard to overcome a 7 point lead when both teams take turns shooting 2 FTs
I was thinking the same. Especially if the other team hits three threes in a row.
I remember when he was critciized for delibrately fouling when behind in last few minutes of a game, now that's standard.Maybe the time has come to foul late to protect a lead.
The zags look like a powerful 1 seed.
Please someone remind me again why Gonzaga is a 1 seed.
Because nobody else that would have been a worthy candidate played like they wanted it. It's kind of hard to not give the #1 team in the nation anything but a 1 seed.
I'd bet that if Indiana, Michigan, Ohio State, Michigan State or Wisconsin played in the WCC, they'd all have 0 or 1 conferences losses and they'd all have 0-4 losses total. Just because you win a kazillion games against no one doesn't mean you should be a 1 seed. /preachingtothechoir
I completely agree. Personally I think they should have been a 3 seed. I'm just thinking that's what the committee probably thought and teams like Duke that could have been a 1 decided to flame out.
Gonzaga is playing anything unlike the #1 team in America. I'm sure Southern is a good team in is own right, but if Gonzaga is as good as the polls say they are, this game should have been over a long time ago.
Because playing unranked opponents for the last two months of your season is difficult.
I never wish a 16-1 upset on any #1 seed. Evar.
Anyone else like Smart from OSU is overrated, overconfident and too damn cocky?
- feel like
A little but dude can ball.
I dunno, I saw him when they played Kansas in Stillwater and he was pretty awesome then. That's the only game I've seen of his though
Gonzaga's lead now 54-52 with 5 minutes left.
#1 seed indeed.
Yeah, Ohio isn't going to lose to Gonzaga if it comes to that.
this Gonzaga-Southern game is the best play-in game I've ever seen
....wait a second
Is Getting some great officiating
Foul on Southern???? No!! I got it going the other way.
I used to have no strong feeling about Gonzaga. I now despise them.
Wish our guys could shoot free throws as well as Southern.
I thought we were gonna see a 16 seed beat 1. If you'll excuse me now, I'm going to get bet money on Wichita State
Think the John Stockton and his daughter relationship is a little weird?
Glad I picked wichita and Oregon to make it to the next round!!!
