Open practice reaction thread

Submitted by go16blue on

It won't be over for a few hours still, but I figured I may as well start this thread now. I'm there currently. It's tough to take much from a practice like this, but I can give an impression of the depth chart. Sorry for the disorganization.

Rudock at QB, Smith at RB, Harris/Perry/Chesson at WR (haven't seen much Darboh now that I think of it). Line is as it was reported previously. LBs were solidly Ross/Bolden/Morgan (now wearing #3), and CBs saw a lot of LewisClark (thanks Qmatic), Stribling, and a couple others. Hill and Wilson played with the 1s at S, and of course Jabril played every snap. Butt obviously started at TE. Isaac was first off the bench at RB, Morris at QB. I'll try to update with further impressions as possible. I'd love to see other attendees corroborate the above, and add more details. They came down on phones pretty hard so this is all from memory.

But in his defense, how many 5 star running backs have run behind offensive lines as inept as UM's two seasons ago?

Last year his numbers looked good, but were limited after getting hurt in the Rutgers game.  But against Minnesota, Utah, and Notre Dame, he didn't do much at all.

I typically don't put a ton of stock in news that leaks out at this point in camp, but that said, if I had to choose between hearing good things about Green or Kalis at this point, I'd have taken Kalis.

But to answer your question, in my opinion, yes, it is still too soon.

I hope you are right. Also, to clarify, I consider a 5 star a bust if they aren't a starter on the team and close to at least an honorable mention "All Conference". For me, Green has never passed the eyeball test. I watch him play and he looks average (not average in a bad way, but simply an average Big Ten football player). Nothing electric about him. Maybe my expectations are too high, but I expect a 5 star guy to walk on the field and by my observing I should be able to pick him out on the field....such as with Jabril.

Understood.

I spent a lot of my adult life watching Jerome Bettis in the NFL, and when he wasn't getting into the Hall of Fame the first couple votes, the talk was his career average ypc, eye test failures, etc.  He was never going to be flashy in the traditional sense; his career highlight video includes him running over Artrell Hawkins and Brian Urlacher.

What set Bettis apart was his feet, and while that skill can be developed, in some bigger guys it takes time.  Maybe I'm being unfairly patient with Green, but with bigger running backs, their bigger impacts on games come later after a defense has been "softened" to an extent.

Green's never had that opportunity, and I guess I want to see him in the game in the 4th quarter, against a good defense with UM protecting a lead, and seeing what he does then, when one would expect his skillset to be most effective and important.

I'm concerend he's Kevin Grady all over again too though, but not ready to make the call yet.

as a freshman and is being judged by those results. If the program had been in better shape at the time than Green most likely would have been held out of action during his freshman season and especially after coming into camp out of shape, etc...

It takes a fair amount of stones to come on this blog and say you liked any ideas of Hoke's... That being said, could the no-contact jerseys be Maize? Or do some players already wear Maize to practice?

But players said with maize pants, they didn't stand out enough. WD, where are you? I kind of remember people bitching because the maize jerseys were different than the maize pants.

Maybe Rich Rod years? Hell, I could be making all of this up.

But I hate us wearing red jerseys for any reason. The orange were decent, get to the orange pylons and score some points...they made sense if you were OCD and needed a reason.
