Ohio State vs Marshall 2010 Opener

Submitted by jamiemac on
So, I have no link. But, I believe this will be announced as the day goes on. It's being reported down here on the airwaves in Ohio. The Bucks are hosting Marshall in their season opener. They have moved the game from Saturday afternoon to Thursday night, September 2. The Big 10 on Thursday Night Football? Interesting move. Does OSU think this is the Big East or something? Thankfully, we have Rodriguez, then. Anyway, I thought this was some interesting scheduling news. Maybe some MGoPosters have some comments on it.......

This has happened before. MSU played Oregon on a Thursday night, we played Minnesota on a Friday night, and there are a few more examples that are escaping my mind right now. Not exactly the norm (and hopefully never will be), but certainly not unprecedented.

the friday night thing was becuase of a baseball playoff conflict at the metrodome. previous to this, weekday games were mostly for the up and coming programs whose alumni's corduroys are not embroidered with the team's logo.

reason why michigan ever played the gophers on a friday night is because it conflicted with the twins playoff game...and it always seemed to happen to michigan... IIRC there is a story about bill martin walking up to minnesotas AD after the 2003 game and handing him a $20 bill. he then said "consider this your first donation twards the new stadium"...

We've played Minnesota twice on Friday nights in (somewhat) recent years, and obviously, both times the game was in Minnesota. The first time was in 1991 (I don't think that this game was televised) and the second time was the big comeback featuring the Water Buffalo Stampede with John Navarre in 2003. I think both moves to Friday night were prompted by Minnesota Twins post season games. This was certainly the case in 2003.

I don't like seeing college games played on days other than Saturday during the semester. Kids should be studying on a Thursday night not going to a football game. Of course college football isnt about the kids anymore. I guess this game is before class starts.

Hmmm, I can't remember too many Thursday nights spent studying at Michigan. I think that is true for the average Michigan student. So, if the average Michigan student doesn't study Thursday night, there is no way in hell the average OSU student does. Regardless of the presence of a football game.

I'm willing to bet there's more people at the libraries across campus on a Thursday night than there are people at bars/parties etc. Not everyone is going to be studious all the time but with the high volume of kids that have season tickets it's better to keep games at times that cater to kids that go there to do well in school. Plus engineers (which comprises a large part of the marching band and 6000+ students) can't get Fridays off.

OSU's summer quarter ends the week before the game but I'm not sure when the fall quarter starts. Their AD pointed out that one of the main reasons for the move was giving the fans a full Labor Day weekend w/o a game on Saturday.

A Thursday night opener will be okay to watch, especially since the only other thing going on will be baseball. This is similar to what the NFL does - they have been doing a marquee Thursday night to open the season for years. I believe our opener is the following Saturday - maybe Marshall will pull an upset and get everyone happy and fired up.

It's a good move by OSU to move the game Thursday. Football fans across the country will be chomping at the bit for college football to begin and nfl preseason games to end. Great exposure for OSU (not that they really need more). On Thursday night, they'll probably be the only game on TV for people/recruits to watch. If the game was on Saturday, it would probably be on espn or an ABC regional game with a ton of other games on TV at the same time.

This is pretty significant. Thanks for the info. This is a major step for the Big Ten, having a traditional power play on Thursday night. Thank goodness we'll never have to. NIGHT GAMEZ!!!11!!!1!!!
