Ohio State uses "TUN" on the schedule for the NC Trophy

Submitted by mrkid on

Ohio State really got us this time! Instead of putting "Michigan" on the schedule of their National Championship trophy, they really showed us by putting "TUN". Ouch.

So, here's the thing. Woody originated the Team Up North phrase because he couldn't abide calling Michigan by its proper name. But this is how ridiculous that phrase is given the coaching connections between Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State and even Notre Dame.

Two of Michigan's head coaches also coached at Ohio State. One player there. One of its assistants Greg Mattison has  worked for every Michigan head coach since Bo except Rich Rodriguez. He worked alongside Jack Harbaugh, and then worked for John Harbaugh and now Jim Harbaugh as well as Urban Meyer. Before that, he worked for Lloyd Carr and then went to Notre Dame where he worked for a pair of coaches, including a former Michigan State player.

Meyer then tapped Mattison to work for him at Florida where he was one of two co-defensive coordinators when it faced Ohio State for a NC against Jim Tressel  and then faced Michigann in Carr's final game as Michigan head coach.

And Meyer, who worked at Bowling Green, Utah and Florida, is now recalling his time as a grad assistant under Earle Bruce, when he invokes the school up north comment.

But, gee, let's recall that in in the mid-80's while Meyer was just a lowly GA on Bruce's staff, Michigan coached by Bo, had Jim Harbaugh at quarterback, while his dad was coaching at Western Michigan with Greg Mattison, Brady Hoke and John Harbaugh all on staff.

And, of course, Jack Harbaugh is a graduate of Bowling Green and both of his sons are Ohio natives. It's a small world after all. And in college football, coaching is about who you know whether you work up north or at that school down south.

I assume the one player you're referring to is Gary Moeller. Not only did he play for OSU, he also was a co-captain of the 1962 team, during Bo's last year as an assistant there. I bet it'll be a very long time before we have another former OSU captain as our head coach.

To me, it shows how important the rivalry is.  It would've seemed silly for us to put just "Ohio" on any of our trophies or rings because there's already an Ohio University.  What would have been disrespectful would be to not include the game at all or just have the score without anything in the team column.  That would have made it look like we didn't show up.

Its most certainly a dig at us.  The current generation really isn't in tune with the Woody years as we would think they are, they do it because their parents did it and they think its the way things are done.  Once we even out the series and Harbaugh makes it competitive again, they'll stop being such smug assholes about it.

That's the first time I've seen that, would love to see the ones from the early Yost era. I actually wish there was more room at Schembechler Hall to display all of them like Nebraska does:

There was a photo of all our 97 NC trophies (AP, MacArthur Bowl, Grantland Rice etc.) but I can't find it anymore. It was posted on the old UMGoBlue site.

HAHAHA. Good one, troll.

There is no obsession here at Michigan with them other than wanting to beat them in everything.

We don't scratch out the letter O

We don't write songs about how much we hate our rivals.

We don't make up stupid names for our rivals that sound like a junior high insult.

We don't chant things about rivals while we're playing someone else when the PA announcer says how much time is left.

We support Michigan and focus 100% of our attention on Michigan.

If you're talking about an internet board, that's one thing, but guess what? I neg every thread about either rival because I don't feel we should have all these threads here on them for every time they do something dumb.

liquidate ohio state,

humble woody hayes.

ohio has a lot of cows,

send them out to graze,

knock them off their ivory towers,

send them crawling into the showers,

liquidate ohio state,

its a know-nothing party school.

(from a memory of more than 40 years ago.  don't ask me how on earth i can come up with a single word of it, and no guarantees its accurate)

Longtime Detroit area radio morning show host with his comedic sidekicks.

Here's the whole song.  Had to be modified when Hayes was no longer coach!

Liquidate Ohio State
(Sung to the tune of the OSU Fight Song)

Liquidate Ohio State and turn the Buckeyes blue.
They breed a lot of cattle in Columbus,
It looks just like a zoo.

Knock them off their ivory towers,
Send them crawling into the showers,
Down with Ohio State,
It’s a know-nothing party school!

They say the girls who go to O.S.U.,
Are husband hunting dames,
They dig the jocks who got the killer instinct,
Not the boys with brains.

At Columbus you’re way ahead,
With straight A’s in Physical Ed,
Down with Ohio State,
It’s a know-nothing party school.

Bust your guts for Tressel!
Move your butts for Tressel!

Liquidate Ohio State and turn the Buckeyes blue,
They breed a lot of cattle in Columbus,
It looks just like a zoo. Rah! Rah! Rah!

Knock them off their ivory towers,
Send them crawling into the showers,
Down with Ohio State,
It’s a know-nothing party schoooooooooool!
