Ohio State to hire Schiano
According to Schefter, Schiano will be the associate head coach and DC.
Former Bucs HC Greg Schiano expected to accept Assoc HC/DC at Ohio State, per source; will replace former OSU DC Chris Ash, new Rutgers HC.

Winning at Rutgers given their history of losing was impressive. But I think it also has to be put in perspective as well. Rutgers and Schiano started to win after Miami (FL), Virginia Tech, and Boston College left the Big East for the ACC. Rodriguez's WV program was the top dog during that period that also saw Randy Edsall turn UConn into a winner straight from FCS and Jim Leavitt build a USF program from scratch. I think the lower level of competition had a lot to do with it, but there were a lot of good to solid HCs in the Big East at that time in his defense (Rodriguez, Petrino, Dantonio, Brian Kelly, Leavitt, and Edsall).

I think his Rutgers spell is overrated. Sure they had been really bad before he got there, but there was really no reason for that to be true. And they weren't always really bad. It was really only the immedate 5-6 years before Schiano was hired where they cratered. Before that they were just mediocre considering the circumstances of basically going from FCS to FBS when the initial split ocurred in Div. I.
I would add Syracuse disintegrating into a fine mist to the changing circumstances that improved Rutgers' fortunes in the Big East when Schiano arrived.
I also don't think Flood's performance before this year was all that different from Schiano's, and really even including this year. He got fired more for the combination of a down year and everything else. Schiano's Rutgers managed two losing conference seasons (and one 4-8 overall) even after his single year breakthrough. Achieving that single breakthrough year is something to hang his hat on, but that's really about it in my opinion. To me he'll continue to have a better reputation than he's earned until he gets at least one more team into the top 25.

Agree. He was 68-67 at Rutgers and 11-21 in the NFL. His defenses at Miami were ranked 12th & 5th but UM had so much talent I'm not sure he deserves tons of credit.
He's a poor mans Brady Hoke.
December 11th, 2015 at 4:13 PM ^
I got an up close look at him when he was with Tampa Bay. Granted, that is the NFL but he really displayed a lot of ego and a lot of "my way or the highway" attitude. He really alienated himself from the players and thus was a total trainwreck.
His Rutgers record was ok. He did some decent things in a lousy conference with Ray Rice. I just don't think he is as good a coach as some of the opportunities that he gets mentioned for.

And if it is a response to Harb...sorry, HARBAUGH recruiting New Jersey so well then it's nice to be on the side that's making the other guys react for once...
December 11th, 2015 at 2:45 PM ^
He's a defensive coach by trade. And he did something that shouldn't be possible, which is win at Rutgers.
December 11th, 2015 at 2:49 PM ^
I'm not sure there was any great reason why they couldn't have been a semi-successful program before, they just weren't. Now that they're in the BIg 10 East, winning at Rutgers shouldn't be possible.
December 11th, 2015 at 5:26 PM ^
Which is PSU recruiting ground. Plus, they were playing in the Big East, which was pretty tough in the 1990s with Miami (YTM), Virginia Tech, Syracuse and West Virginia. Also, I never got the impression that they cared much about their football program.

There were zero 7-5 seasons. And while he was just barely above .500 as a coach there, he did have six winning seasons (including an 11-2 year) and went 5-1 in bowl games.
December 11th, 2015 at 3:05 PM ^
2005? (Not that I'm saying at all that this is a bad hire.)
December 11th, 2015 at 4:44 PM ^
Or 2007 and 2008 pre bowl wins.

A lot of feasting on bad non-conference schedules (Big East only had 7 conference games) greatly improved his record. 5-2, 5-2, 4-3, and 4-3 are his only four winning Big East campaigns in 11 seasons. He had his teams up for bowl games. I'll give him that. Helps that his best opponent was a 7-4 Kansas State and managed to face two teams entering bowl games with losing records.
There's a lot of fluff in Schiano's record. The man gets more credit for a single top 25 campaign than any other coach in history.
December 11th, 2015 at 5:30 PM ^
Pretty sure those teams fared better than us. Once he was able to recruit his guys there, they started having average to pretty good teams. That's about all you can expect at Rutgers.
December 11th, 2015 at 3:20 PM ^
But I think if we hired Brady Hoke, it would be comparable......if not better

So... will Schiano be the HC when Meyer's "health issues" return? Maybe he's smarter than I thought.
December 11th, 2015 at 2:47 PM ^
Am I the only one who thinks making fun of someone's health issues is not cool?
December 11th, 2015 at 2:55 PM ^
Now now, Mad Hatter. It is NOT cool to make fun of someone's real, legitimate health problems. Not nice at all.
On the other hand, making fun of someone's made-up, bullshit health excuses that were created because you're banging undergrads and facing the realization that you cannot beat Nick Saban? That is freaking HILARIOUS and appropriate...

If you catch the clap banging a hooker without a condom, I'm going to make fun of you. If she gives you HIV, I probably won't joke about it.
Probably.

Charlie Sheen.

Exactly.

Urban's "health issues" are self-inflicted and about 25% sincere at best. AFAIC, they should be fair game. I, like many, expect them to resurface the first time he doesn't get his way.
December 11th, 2015 at 3:01 PM ^
It's cool as long as said health issues are non-existent as those of Urbz. That must a top notch medical staff at espn to nurse him back to health that quick, not to mention the accomodations provided the Meyer family at espn for him to spend that time with them! So yeah it's cool!
December 11th, 2015 at 2:48 PM ^
I don't mean to be an asshole, but the whole "when Meyer's health issues return" thing is so played out. Aside from unexpected death, Meyer is going to coach OSU for a while whether we like it or not. Thankfully we have an elite coach to combat him.
December 11th, 2015 at 2:56 PM ^
It may be getting old, but the guy went from forced retirement from almost having a heart attack/nervous breakdown at Florida to coaching Ohio State in a year. Then all the stories started surfacing about what a dumpster fire Florida was when he left. That is lame and deserves to be ridiculed.
December 11th, 2015 at 3:09 PM ^
I don't mean to be an asshole, but the whole "bitching about things being played out on MgoBlog" is so played out.

Love the hire. I had a feeling we were going to end up getting Paul Rhoads for some reason, so I'll take this. Will help with recruiting the East Coast.
Now, if we can only get rid of Beck.
December 11th, 2015 at 2:46 PM ^
That's not actually a terrible move. Schiano had a terrible tenure as an NFL HC, but he was pretty successful as a HC at Rutgers. I expect that his name will allow him to recruit well (in particular in NJ). Sure, he is an ass, but so is Urban, so they should get along just fine.
December 11th, 2015 at 3:34 PM ^
We've made a lot of inroads recruiting NJ and teams in our division are responding. I wonder if PSU will too..

It is one thing to pluck a coach off the side of the street that is unemployed and quite another to hire someone currently employed and getting ready for a bowl game.
