Notable streaks and trends on the schedule

Here's a little midnight snack.

MTSU

Um, we're undefeated against Middle Tennessee St., I guess.

Army

4-game win streak, all at home. Last win was 1962.

Bonus: Service academies

10 straight wins, all at home. None of these 10 are against Army. The streak started in 1968 after losing to Navy in 1967.

@Wisconsin

Haven't won at Wisconsin since 2001 (losses in 2005, 2007, 2009, 2017).

Rutgers

Having bounced back from our 0-1 start, we are now on a 4-game winning streak and have never lost at home. Somehow there was a margin of victory as close as 21 points in there.

Iowa

Mercifully this is not at Iowa (4-game losing streak, last win was in 2005). However, Iowa still has won 5 of the last 6. Iowa's last win at Michigan was in 2010.

@Illinois

4-game win streak. Our last win at Illinois was in 2011. Last loss was in 2009.

@PSU

Home team has won the last three games with 29 points as the closest margin of victory. That was our one loss in the three games.

Notre Dame

Won the last four home games. Notre Dame's last win at Michigan was 2005.

@Maryland

7-0 all time against Maryland...when we're a ranked team. 4 wins in a row currently with 25 points as the  closest margin of victory. 2-0 at Maryland all time.

STAEE

Road team has won the last 4. Michigan's last win at home was 2012.

@Indiana

23 wins in a row (38 of the last 39)...I think I counted correctly but who knows.

And that's it. Those are the only notable streaks with this year's opponents. No other streaks I can think of.

Some "last time it happened" items of note that could be reset this year now that we have Speed in Space:

  • An individual scored 5 TDs: Ron Johnson in 1968
  • UM scored 30 points in a quarter: 31 points in the 4th at Minnesota in 2003
  • An individual attempted 50 passes: Chad Henne threw 54 times at OSU in 2004 for some reason that I can't quite place.

The odds that I messed something up are fairly high, so feel free to point it out.

Michigan has never lost to tPOSu in a year when more people from Michigan have traveled to Ohio for vacation than substandard humans(?) from Ohio have traveled to Michigan for vacation.

I think one of Brian's preview posts or someone recently posted the single season passing TD record is 25 at Michigan...and 31 teams had a QB last year beat that mark.  I'd say there is a solid chance that record falls this year.

To be fair, Michigan (1991) was murdering teams in conference play with their modern offense, so they didn't throw the ball a lot in the 4th quarter.

If Moeller would've kept his foot on the gas pedal and played for style points, Grbac would've easily eclipsed 30 TDs in only 12 games.

For MTSU:

1) U-M has won 6 straight season opening games that were played in AA.

2) U-M is 6-0 all-time against teams with "Blue" in the opponent's nickname.  (all Duke)

3) U-M is 2-0 all-time against current C-USA teams  (Rice 1999, 2000).  I actually find it kind of strange U-M has only played 1 of the current 14 C-USA teams.

4) U-M has won 2 straight August games, and is 6-1 all-time in August games.

5) U-M is 9-0 all-time against teams from Tennessee, when the game is played in AA.

That's all I got.

Proximity to MAC teams used to make no difference for over 50 years.  Michigan played Western in 1943 and then didn't play a MAC school again until 1995 when we played Miami-Ohio.  But even that game was a replacement for Oklahoma State, who dropped us.

By the late 90's, MAC schools were playing ALL the power conference teams and it eventually started becoming the norm for us too.  Although lately, it's gone back to kind of a rare thing.  4 of the last 5 years have had no MAC opponents.

PSU has played slightly more C-USA teams (5 teams, 9 games) and slightly less MAC teams (9 teams, 29 games) than U-M.

PSU has played Marshall, and has played a number of Florida teams (FAU & FIU now, South Florida & UCF when they were rising up through C-USA and the Big East) in the 2000s for buy games.

There was a period earlier this century where it seemed like U-M was playing one of the Michigan MAC teams yearly, while PSU was playing one of Ohio, Akron or Kent State yearly.

It's interesting: even for the one-off games, geography matters a bit.

Need a win against Army this year to get back to 0.500 against them all time (this well known, but still worth mentioning).

UM hasn't gone undefeated since 1997.

Let's do both.

The sooner this fanbase comes to grips with, and can talk about, that shit-stain that is our record against OSU in the last 15 years, the quicker the BPONE will go away.  Self-destructive cycle y'all got goin on here.

Last time we beat Sparty at home was 2012.  I remember that game.  UGLY.  We kicked 4 field goals in that game including one at the buzzer to beat them 12-10.   Their D was legit that year and their O was terrible.   That year's team was very much like their team last year.   I'm fearful that this year's team might be like their 2013 team and we all know what that team did.
