These days you don't need a key in the ignition to start many cars. Hell you can start most remotely. Or he could have been charging a phone, running a/c, reading a blog, counting his booster cash and not driving. I'm not saying that's what happened here, but the standard is innocent until proven guilty and DUI should involve a moving car.

Ya I am sure he has never driven drunk before. Every football movie made and has the stereotypical head coach is so close to Saban in real life it is mind numbing. The guy apitomizes all that is bad in college football. Him and that fall guy asshole from osu would cover up anything if a guy can help a team win a football game and anyone who looks up to either of them is just plain worthless. Parents who encourage their sons to play ball at alabama.....well enough said.

If Alabama was opening up against a team like "South Alabama," "Michigan State," or "Louisiana-Lafayette" Hand would have been suspended for a game - guaranteed.  However, they are opening up against Florida State - so boys will be boys.

I hate Alabama as much as anyone but from what I read (Maybe its not the most up to date info) he was just sleeping in his suspiciously expensive car that no normal college kid could afford unless it was given to them by say Nick Saban....drunk.

If he was caught driving then hell yess suspend him but if he was just sleeping then whatever

I work in the medical field and if I got caught the exact same way Hand did I likely lose my job and very possibly my medical license. I hate the culture we created and allowed where gifted athletes are babied and above the law. What kind of role models do kids have left?

Tim Williams was suspended one half last year after being arrested for carrying a handgun without a permit ... on campus. Bama football standards are a tad loose, you might say.

Today it's a guy sleeping in the driver's seat of a running car. It could have just as well been the back seat. Or in many cases/states, the car doesn't even have to be running.

So what's next? A guy opening his car door (to get his jacket and walk home) while drunk? Or in the parking lot talking to friends with his keys in his hand?

I get it - DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE. No argument from me. But the key word is DRIVE. Why do we have to go so f-ing overboard? It's just an over reaction.

I've personally taken a nap in my car after a long day of golf (and some adult beverages) with the air conditioner blowing. Didn't drive home until I was certain it was safe. Sure, I could have gotten a taxi but didn't want to have to come back for my car.

So I'm all for giving the kid a pass since he wasn't driving.

BTW - I rarely drink these days, but in my youth a $100 portable breathalyzer was a sound investment. Since drinking clouds your judgement, take out the guesswork!

Look, it's fun to poke fun at the lax standards.  However,  DUI in a moving vehicle 2-3 game suspension at least.

He was in a parked car sleeping off alcohol in a parking lot

Let's say he doesn't know in and outs of DUI law in Alabama.

<Thought Process>

Sits down at wheel:

"Man, I'm too drunk to drive.  I'll sleep here"

<OK decision not the best ( Uber) but decent>

You guys are talking back seat / passenger seat.  As the Rock say IT DOES NOT MATTER, what his intention was.  He wasn't driving.

Sorry, it's a stupid law.   In a parking lot,  shouldnt be a DUI if sitting in a car.  Michigan is the same way.

Personally,  teams should have a no questions asked policy on uber, throw 10k in a pot for players.  let guys get shaufferred around campus.. Call it a safety expense.

Meanwhile a USC player is kicked out of school for "domestic violence".  She pleads with the Universty that she was never close to being abused and is fighting on HIS behalf.

Since he was asleep in his car, I'm fine with this. I'm sure he's getting the fuck run out of him in practice.

The normal penalty for a DUI appears to be 1 game. That's what JT Barrett got, that's what Fitz Toussiant got, that's what Graham Glasgow got. Seeing as how he wasn't actually driving, I'm fine with them bumping the punishment down to an internal matter.

What a slimy fuck Saban is, asterisks next to his name as far as I'm concerned. Best coach in CFB my ass...

He needed to unwind a little after studying all night for his engineering finals.  It's tough being one of the top engineering schools in America.  Which is why Hand went there.  Remember?

The North remembers!!

The Saban logic is simple. DaShawn wasn't in HIS car considering a Booster gave it to him to use. You can't honestly suspend the kid when it truly wasn't his car! Had it been his car, then you have a case to suspend him one game! But since no Alabamy players actually owns their own cars, there is never a reason to suspend a kid.

I guess that Hand, in the tradition of Saban discipline, apologized most profusely and agreed that he would cut Nick's lawn and take out Nick's trash and recycling for the next few weeks - off hours, of course, so as not to miss any practice time either. The schedule, as always, will be flexible based on Hand's availability.

He was sleeping in the car, not driving, and I agree that this is a huge distinction. I'm all for ripping on Saban, but somehow I think he got this right. I had a friend that was in Ohio for work, and got drunker than he expected at a bar and decided to sleep in his car until he was sober.  Cops pulled up and since his car was running to keep him warm, he got a DUI. It was a lot of money and a pain in his ass to get that all taken care of.

Since he is a 1st teamer - no suspension

Lesser used player would have been suspended.

Example:

Baker Mayfield. 1st team QB Oklahoma - No suspension

Oklahoma Backup QB - dropped from team
