No Live Band at UM/'Zona Hoops Game.....wait for it......DJ!
I figured this tweet was okay to put here since this person tweeted @mgoblog
@mgoblog New low for AD? Replacing AlumniPepBand with a DJ for the Arizona game due to oversold student tkts, which are still on sale
Dave Brandon strikes again
November 21st, 2013 at 3:27 PM ^
Does the tweet mean to say that there won't be room for the band b/c there will be too many students?
November 21st, 2013 at 3:47 PM ^
I believe that is what the AD is trying to say with this move, yes.
November 21st, 2013 at 3:56 PM ^
Well, there's this:
Limited Tickets - Due to unclaimed student tickets, limited U-M vs. Arizona single-game tickets are available ($60): http://mgob.lu/MICHvsAZ
November 21st, 2013 at 3:28 PM ^
So that means students without season tickets are buying single game tickets, so how are they overselling THOSE? They don't have anything to guarantee to those students!
November 21st, 2013 at 3:45 PM ^
If the arizona game is over a break, the tickets wouldn't be part of the season ticket package and would have to be sold individually, not sure if that is the case with this though.

She said in a previous tweet that the alumni pep band was told of this last night, so she may be in it, but John U Bacon confirmed it.
@jefd22 I just heard about this. Well, if you've read "Fourth and Long," you have to give the athletic department credit for consistency.

It doesn't look like she's a member or the AD or press, just a fan/alum.

I've never been sure what makes one a DJ. Am I a DJ when I push play on, say, a Youtube clip of a song?

In the strictest sense of the term, yes, yes you are.

My stomach is churning and I cannot see any longer.
November 21st, 2013 at 3:33 PM ^
Well, at least they're honoring the student's tickets, despite overselling them.
November 21st, 2013 at 3:35 PM ^
Nevertheless, I hope they go for the full centerpieces at the game, though, rather than going for something cheap looking with sad little flowers. I also hear DB is thinking about vegetarian hors d'oeuvres, which would be a real mistake...

with video on the scoreboard for two straight hours.
This story is true - I have a friend in the Alumni Pep Band and she said they were notified yesterday. The next thing you know, we'll have macaroni outside Michigan Stadium.

Has anyone noticed that the MMB for football goes absolutley NO WHERE on the road unless it's MSU, OSU, or a Bowl? Why is that? Is it really all about the money? I always liked the way The Victors sounded in an otherwise shushed stadium.
November 21st, 2013 at 3:41 PM ^
They also go to ND
November 21st, 2013 at 3:47 PM ^
If I remember correctly they only do two trips a year and thats been the case since before dave brandon, but im not positive on that.
November 21st, 2013 at 3:55 PM ^
This has pretty much been the case since the early 2000s, for a variety of reasons. Money is the primary concern. Also, unlike most other Big 10 schools, Michigan gets locked in to two major rivalry games and a major non-conference game every year, so while other schools rotate their 1-2 away trips per year, we're pretty much locked in on those three. You can't skip MSU, OSU, or Notre Dame, and the rest of the schools aren't usually big enough games to merit the expense for an overnight trip.
That being said, there have been efforts to get the MMB to other places, most recently the PSU game in '06. Schembechler Hall asked the MMB to come along, came up with the money, and the transportation plan and hotel reservations were made. Then PSU came back and said they couldn't find seats in the stadium, and their policy was not to put bands on the field level, so the whole thing was cancelled.

is going to every road game but one or two this year.

Pauly D!? It would be the perfect counter to MSU's affiliation with Mike Sorrentino.
November 21st, 2013 at 3:44 PM ^
I suppose that the alternative, if we asked the athletic department, was just to have all the Christmas tunes on WNIC play over the PA if the DJ was not possible. After all, the game is December 14th, and it would be interesting to see what happens if "It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas" is a good song for back-to-back dunks if it happens.

DJ Khaled!?

This apparently went out in an email to the Alumni Band last night. They were told not to openly protest the decision, and it looks like that request came from the MMB. Don't rock the boat, just take it, the decision has been made, etc.
For those questioning Jennie Dalton, she and her husband Pete are integral parts of the Alumni Band and UMBAA (Univ. of Michigan Band Alumni Association). They both play in the pep band, and are about the biggest Michigan fans and MMB supporters you'll find.

At any rate, you can pretty much bet money Athletics will be putting out a Dave Ablauf press release/Angelique quote within the next 24 hours saying it's all a misunderstanding, the Pep Band just misunderstood, Athletics is making overtures/shifting around tickets to make it right, and there WILL be a live band at the game.
That's how this Athletic Department rolls. Push the envelope, evaluate negative reaction, wait 18 hours or so, come back with the "that's not what we really meant, here's the solution you all wanted, you're welcome, Go Blue" thing.
November 21st, 2013 at 4:20 PM ^
Don't mind this move, should help with the younger crowd and with recruits. I just hope the DJ knows the type of music to play. Should make the student section really hype. Let's be honest, the band isn't really getting people rowdy like a DJ will. I think it's a good change for ONE GAME. If half of you blue beards had your way, Michigan would still be playing without the 3-pt line.
November 21st, 2013 at 4:22 PM ^
Two words: The Victors.
November 21st, 2013 at 4:47 PM ^
It's not like it isn't going to be played, I'm sure the DJ will have that in his set or they can play it over the PA. I can't tell the difference if it's a recording or live, nor will anyone watching on TV.
