Like I said. At over 100 scholarships. Gonna happen with guys where we have a ton of depth. Expect more. Don’t freak out.
I've given you grief for panic-button-esque posts in the past. This post will make me eat some of my past words sent in your direction. Kudos.
You're 100% correct. "Expect more. Don't freak out."
Only 95 now but yeah
Way to be first. No link. No problem. Just be first.
yes
Yep. 3rd of the day...and all 3 veterans that were battling for a starting spot.
I mean I guess they were all fighting for starting spots, but Moten has been on a downward trend for the last year or so, Henning struggled to see any offensive snaps, and NHG was injured all of last year with the LB room only getting better in the meantime. The biggest loss of the 3 guys is probably Henning's punt returning abilities
You nailed the analysis in a succinct way. +1 for you.
Hausmann effect
Sounds like the staff had some honest conversations with guys who were battling for spots.
Firm handshakes.
Silly to suggest these kids were encouraged to depart (firm handshakes). They may have been informed that they would be in a battle for time or behind in that battle, but no chance the staff wanted these guys to leave
I'm sure the staff would love to have 150 plus guys on scholarship...but the fact is there are only 85 to hand out. This is the 1 sad fact about the extra covid year.
With "NIL", no, there isn't really an 85 player limit anymore.
Wonder whether each of them should've received a laurel and hardy handshake.
I would think that the sudden rash of portal entries means some discussions about rough estimates of playing time and position on the depth chart have been had.
I choose to believe that in the same spirit of the mgoblog rule of implications of weight gains and losses, all transfer portal entries are due to better, stronger, faster players pushing their way up the depth chart.
There's only 2 transfer windows for fall sports via the portal. The first is around new years, the second is May 1 - 15. Players right now pretty much have to decide now whether to enter the portal or not.
Come May 16th, you could enter the portal but you wouldn't be participate in the sport at the other school until Jan '24.
Good luck, we are pretty stacked at lb
Each one is slightly worse.
He was the pinnacle of our all-Hill / all-Green defense!
was excited to have him back. This is a bummer.
This is the real issue.
Our dreams of a team filled with all Green, Hill, Warren, and combinations of those names are really coming to an end here.
I'm too proud for cryin'.
Didn't come here to break down.
It's just a dream of mine is coming to an end . . .
If only Greenhills had a football program, the Wolverines could have a steady pipeline for local talent at the ready.
Wasn't expecting this, but also makes sense when you think about it. We're very deep at LB
Crazy how much things change since January.
A little OT-ish but I think tracking the career progression for players through the portal would make a great 3-5 year case study down the road. Yes, players have been transferring for decades but it now seems to be the quickest and most drastic change a player can make regardless of the positives or negatives. It really is fascinating to see if transferring equates to more playing time, player development, and NFL draft stature.
Wish them all the best either way.
They're all following the Aaron Shea plan.
At a better school, my guess is no no and no. There are exceptions of course but if you are not a likely starter by your junior year a transfer probably won’t help you much. You can find a place to play but a transfer is not a ticket to the nfl.
NHG was now behind Barrett and Colson and we have Hausman and Rolder as true sophomores. It sucks because I think he is a great player but it was a position where pur rags to riches story meant attrition was likely.
I hate to say it, but he was slower than the four guys you mentioned. The writing was on the wall. I wish him and rest of our people seeking better opportunities to showcase their skills nothing but the best. Just don’t go for MSU.
Well so much for our great LB depth. I wonder if this means that injury that he was supposed to come back from week 1 and then didn't come back from ever is a drake harris style he's just broken now injury. Sad if so.
Like Henning and Moten, it’s not really that shocking given that these guys all want to play.
During a recent Minter interview NHG was the 4th LB he named. Colson and Barrett were the starters and Hausmann was on their heels as the 3rd guy. So it seems unlikely he would be able to get starter snaps and with young guys behind him that day may have never come again at Michigan.
As much as it sucks seeing a kid leave, I think we’d all agree that getting Barrett back and Hausmann in the fold is worth the cost of losing NHG.
I wish him and the others leaving today the best. They were all part of the team and culture that brought this program back to the level we want and expect. So thank you and Go Blue.
Damn. Another vet who...you can't get mad at him. All 3 guys are on the cusp and it was unlikely any of them would start next season.
Can't blame them, I wish them all the best!
None of this is really a surprise
McNamera, All, Moten, NHG, and Henning makes 5 starters from the 2021 Playoff team in the portal.
With the exception of Henning for returns (which is a very solvable problem) we have guys (plural) who are expected to contribute more than these former starters. It shows how far our program has come.
Having a meaningful few years playing for Michigan looks good on your portal resume. Get it while the getting is good.
I wouldn’t be surprised if we see around a half dozen more players head to the portal. There are some WRs who haven’t seen the field much/made position switches, a RB or two, an OL or two who are behind an underclass man or two, and I wouldn’t be surprised also if a younger QB might look for a chance at a smaller school.
Is it ok if I freak out? You seem to have forgotten to give guidance on this matter.
How much better is this board to be around now than two or even one year ago???
Many of you are so much nicer and more optimistic about things. We have a little resilience in these threads where it used to just be BPONE
So if he's in the portal, he'll never actually show up in it
Yeah, and expect 5-10 more by September. Stop freaking out. We have too many players. Some have to go.
Says a lot about how good the LB room is imo. Or that maybe he slowed down more than we like to admit.
Okay best of luck to him and the other guys. Anybody think there are more to follow?
WTKA Roundtable last Thursday has aged poorly real fast. NHG I thought was going to be a starter for the team?
You can't say in the same breath Portal: Haussman YEEEEESSSS
And Portal: NHG Noooooooooooooooo
It just is what it is.... Pretty telling the coaches went sniffing around Nebraska for their true freshmen LB who looks like he will be a dude in due time. Barrett is now the key IMO. He has to be as good as he finished the year last year and we will be fine with Hausmann pushing and Rolder available and serviceable.
