So strange - it still seems like yesterday when he was a player here and had his knee destroyed by a wisc cheap shot.

I'm sure he'll do fine, but this is shaping to be a *very* inexperienced staff.

Moore probably hasn't had a lot of choice in the matter.  Because Harbaugh took so much time to finally leave, and then took a lion's share of the staff with him, Moore was essentially left with table scraps.  Plus, Moore doesn't have a lot of experience outside of Michigan and Louisville, so he hasn't had much chance to network.

Grant didn't play *that much* at a "high level"... he played five games as a freshman and then 1+ month as a sophomore starter until he suffered the career ending injury.

This isn't exactly Jon Jansen, Jake Long,  Graham Glasgow or some other long experienced guy coming back to teach OL.

Again - he's probably a great young coach, but he's not teaching from a wealth of personal experience.

He played at the JuCo level, but yeah he had more general experience but I'd argue Newsome had the higher ceiling and only played fewer games because of injury.

My larger point is Newsome doesn't strike me as inexperienced as much as quite young.

IIRC in those 5 games he was on pace to have an All-Big Ten season before the dirty hit. And like you said, only a sophomore. He worked his ass off to come back it just wasn't in the cards physically. There is a reason Harbaugh took him on as a GA and promoted him as he earned it.

I think we're seeing analytics on the ascendancy for OCs and DCs.  You can be an analyst for a couple of years and become a coordinator/play caller because you don't actually have to know how to play a position beyond the mechanics.  ...but for a position coach, I think it helps to have someone who can actually do the techniques.

Newsome has Moore-level buzz around him.  Said to be decent recruiter because of his age, and good communicator.  Harbs loved him too.  He is exactly the type of coach you keep around, develop and promote.  Plus if we keep guys like Elston (and you combine that with the HC being a former Line coach himself), he has built in mentorship/help on staff.

This spot is an area that makes lots of sense to me. Moore is the old OL coach, which means that there’s tons of institutional knowledge still in the room. He is the HC, which means that he doesn’t have time to coach OL himself, but he’s still nearby and can ensure that the OL continues to be taught the way he wants it. And Newsome *has* been on the staff for a while, learning; I have no inside knowledge on this, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he were already helping out a bit here, especially when Sherrone got tapped to HC in the last three games. So this seems like a sensible step up that they’ve prepared him for. Honestly, his credentials to coach OL are at least as good as Moore’s when Moore took over for 2021.

This is one of the most sensible in-house promotions I can think of. I’m more concerned about the D, since a lot of the knowledge is gone.

He played the position, and is coming from coaching tight ends. Which is relevant considering the tight ends are heavily incorporated in the blocking schemes. Also of note, that’s the same path Sherrone Moore took.
Tight Ends —-> OL

Also, Moore is there. I’m sure if Newsome needs any tips or pointers, Moore would gladly help out.

The Harbaugh coaching tree seems pretty great. Newsome has spent his entire coaching life under Harbaugh, who has very strong feelings about OL play and seems to be a big fan of Grant.

“Grant has been a positive, motivating force within our coaching staff since he joined us as a student assistant,” head coach Jim Harbaugh said in a statement. “We have had a front-row seat to Grant’s development as a coach and are excited that he has chosen to accept our offer to become a full-time assistant. He is a future star in this profession, and our players really respect what Grant is teaching on the field and the insight that he shares from life experiences.”

When its stops being true people will stop pointing it out.  Right now this this the exception to the rule.  Meanwhile ohio is doing push ups in the parking lot and the citizens are raising whatever money they can spare to make sure the past 3 years don’t happen ever again.  What’s Warde doing to beat ohio today?

Nothing is "true" here. It's all speculation. People trying to connect dots. May be right, may be wrong. We literally don't know why Herbert left, for example. It could've been the call of the NFL and the chance to continue to work with Harbaugh, who may have promised him an expanded role, given that a lot of the culture at Michigan has been attributed to him. It may have very little to do with not being offered a 10 year contract to stay, if that even happened.

Good news. Need to get these staff members locked up quickly to try to stave off these leeches from other programs. Instead of focusing on Herbert, everyone needs to hype up Tress. All this doomsdaying can’t be helping recruiting or roster retention.
