New Marching Band/Fan Participation Songs

Submitted by MMBhorn on
I'm back and looking for fan input again. A few days ago the Marching Band Staff sent out the following email to those of us returning to the band next year. "Hey MMB: We need your input for the "All In For Michigan" Season. Just think 39 days and we will all be in the Big House for our first game!!! Michigan Athletics is asking our help to come up with some really awesome crowd participation songs that could be played for the fourth quarter of the game." Because I'm lazy/busy/not creative/whatever I don't feel like coming up with anything on my own, so I'm passing it over to you guys. We're looking for something that could become our "Jump Around". A football version of what we do at Yost with "Can't Turn you loose". We have until tomorrow (July 30th) to submit ideas, so fire away. -Your friendly MMB Liason

I like the idea too, but I doubt it will happen. Can't Turn you loose is generally reserved for homecoming and The Cake. Would doing it every week lessen the impact of that? I think the answer is going to have to be something completely new.

Yep, we already had our "Jump Around" with Respect. And then I guess that wasn't good enough. It used to be that the MMB had the cojones to stick up to Athletics and tell them where to stick it when they had "genius" marketing ideas to make the Stadium more intense. Or when anybody outside of the Band requested anything. This seems to have gone by the wayside over the last, oh, 2 years. I'll let the more industrious deduce why that change in policy and attitude occurred. Instead of coming up with new songs that will probably go nowhere with the fans, how about playing louder, eliminating stuff that obviously doesn't work (the Wicked fanfare thing is just horrendous), etc. etc.? And if you really want to know what the fans want to hear, Rocky and Bullwinkle will bring the house down. Guaranteed. A Michigan tradition that got mocked and killed during the Nix era, but was constantly requested by pretty much every section the Fanfare Band went to in the 3rd quarter during my 4 years in the MMB. Crisler Concert isn't enough for that one. A steady dose of Rocky, Blues Brothers, and Respect is all that's needed here, not stupid pap Athletics thinks is cool, and that Boerma will likely botch anyway.

This is awesome that you posted this here. Crowd participation songs are something my wife and I have kind of been annoyed about for years. For example, "Living on a Prayer" was amazing during the '04 MSU game. I think it actually had a role in all those Braylon TDs. But the past couple years, it's been thrown into the rotation and played at inappropriate/weird times. I really think the MMB needs to arrange and play more hip-hop songs. It seems like the only new songs are from bands like Fall Out Boy (I think "Sugar, We're Going Down" was played at 2 different halftime shows--and I hate that freaking song!). The only hip-hop song I can really remember the band playing was "Hey Ya." Maybe there aren't a lot of songs that would translate well to a marching band, but thinking about the music playing at the spring game (and yes, I know a lot of people complained about that), it was almost all hip-hop. Maybe it'd get people more pumped up? Now that I got that rant out of there, I'm going to try to come up with some songs. Thanks again for this post. Good luck this year.

I know the band isn't all-white for one, and the alumni/fan base definitely isn't. When Vandy came a few years ago, they were getting down on the sidelines during the game. Vandy is like the Northwestern of the SEC. I think it's just time to get some more up-to-date music.

FYI...Cotto in 9. Manny hasnt fought anyone with Cotto's strength. Yea a headbutt to the head will cause Cotto to bleed, oh and so would Margarito loading his gloves. Its gonna be a hell of a fight but I dont think beating Ricky Hatton or a De La Hoya 8 yrs past his prime is the same as fighting Miguel Cotto.

There is a song TI 'raps' in called "ASAP", I believe. In the background is band music which sounds great. I'm not sure how it would sounds in the Big House and without lyrics, but it would be worth a shot. I think the beat of that song would pump people up.

Before I offer any suggestions, I just want to thank you again for making this community an interactive part of the band's participation in the upcoming season. I know it's been on my mind since you first broached the topic and I appreciate your warm reception of my ideas thus far. With that being said... Here's the plan: I propose the band break away three trumpeters from the band and put them surreptitiously somewhere else in the stadium. They then blast the opening notes to this classic: And as the crowd cranes its collective neck to see the musicians behind the notes floating down to them, the rest of the band KICKS THE FUCK IN. YEAH MAN FOURTH QUARTER What do you think, sir?

I've been reading this blog almost every day for about two years. Until now, I've never felt strongly enough to post anything. This is by far the best idea in this thread. This might be the best idea I've ever encountered. In any subject. I can't decide whether to thank you for coming up with it or curse you for the severe disappointment I will feel when it is rejected.

I know they do this for Red Sox games (and probably other schools), but what about Sweet Caroline? Anyways, whatever gets picked I think it should be something that the entire stadium would know the words to, not just the student section.

That song in animal house I think, the one the guy sings during the toga scene, they play that scene at the palace all the time and the crowd gets into it. It goes you make me want to shout, throw my hands up and shout

A lot of these are decent suggestions. The problem is that they've already been done, or are currently done at other venues. I think we need to find some fresh, new ideas. @Big Boutros: I'm happy to be of service. I hear people bitching about the band all the time, and hopefully I can do something to change that at least a little bit. And I like the Ennio Morricone idea. That man's a true BAMF

NICKELBACK NICKELBACK KNEED MOAR RAWK MUSIC How about Wolfmother's "Woman?" How about Beyonce's first hit, is it "Crazy in Love?" That song has a cool riff. And, of course, how about "Whatta Man?" by Salt N Pepa? Could be apropo after a big sack or key catch....
