Must Stop Reading Drew Sharp: Tate or Denard Will Likely Transfer

Submitted by Shalom Lansky on
It is my fault for reading anything written by Drew Sharp, it isn't as if I don't know what I'm getting into but I have an unfortunate compulsion to read anything and everything written about Michigan. What bothers me most about his and many other columnists work is the blur between the presentation of opinion and fact. The following two passages are from his column today: "Tate Forcier's comfort in precisely chronicling his difficulties last week didn't exactly calm the storm. When Forcier publically acknowledged that Denard Robinson took most of the practice reps with the first unit, he basically threw his fellow freshman under the bus when Robinson played little at Wisconsin. How embarrassed do you think Robinson feels today, spending all that preparation time and then not playing much? How fast can you expedite the transfer paperwork?" And later on: "Forcier insists he's not going anywhere. But what happens the next time there's a snit because there supposedly was miscommunication about a skipped study hall? He's the better short-term answer at QB, but Robinson might be the long-term answer for Rodriguez's system, considering his size. One likely is gone after this season." I understand but don't necessarily agree with his take on Tate throwing Denard under the bus, but hey that is his purposefully inflammatory opinion, but a one-off throwaway statement like "One is likely gone after the season" is unsupported by any facts. Given the rest of the piece this is probably his opinion but it is presented as if it is based on some inside knowledge, which is probably is not. I think Sharp should again be taken to task by mgoblog readers. Hey, if he has some inside info, I hope he shares it with us, if not he should clarify this as opinion.

Yes, a personal attack. Not only his articles, but he has the single worst radio talk show that I have ever listened to. Matt Shepherd is pretty good, and that show is still an absolute disaster due to Sharp's bullshit. How that person became credible to anybody is beyond me.

that Drew Sharp would write something this way. Normally he's sooooo top notch. Columnists speculate. Wildy, at times. Laziness, and by that I mean the unwillingness to develop actual, you know, sources of information, leads to this. See?:
I have it on good authority from multiple sources that Drew Sharp is leaving the Free Press for the Houghton Mining Gazette, where he will write a thrice-weekly column about his problems with snow and "northy" things.

Tate talks more than he should. I would prefer if he keeps his head down and not give anybody any material to twist out of context and give more headaches to RR. Dickheads like Sharp have enough help to create trouble from within the AD as it is.

Tate talking as much as he does is the reason why fans feel they can relate to him. He could be more careful with what he says, perhaps. But I'm Facebook friends with him and I haven't seen him post anything totally out of line. Even the "Terrible day" thing that got TOTALLY blown out of proportion. Geez, people! The kid's 18. He's allowed to have a bad day once in a while during his first semester in college. He just recently posted this: " I got the boys from back home coming in this week on their official visits. RB- Brennan Clay Oklahoma commit WR-Kenny Stills RB/WR Dillon Baxter USC commit SS- Tony Jefferson- UCLA commit" You can just feel the kid's excitement. And I think that's great for Michigan football.

Yeah I was talking with one of my friends back home last night and he was convinced that Denard would transfer after the season was finished. He said "it was all over 97.1" and that D-Rob wanted to be a starting qb not a gimmick qb. Just curious is anyone that listens can corroborate this. Personally, I'm calling BS but I guess you can never know. (I hate the fact that this is what's being discussed during Ohio State week too.)

DRob isn't going to transfer. UM was the only school to offer him the opportunity to be a QB at a BCS school. All others wanted him in a percy harvin role. At least for the next year he will continue to develop in the QB role. If he gets beat out by Devin Gardner in 2011 then he will have to make the decision to switch positions or transfer to an FCS school. DRob is smart enough to realize that if he can develop as a QB, then great, but if he cannot then he has a great shot at being a multi-millionaire in a percy harvin role. All of the above is just my opinion.

Not because of Sharp, but: 1- because I am hearing black helicopters everywhere I go right about now--yesterday's news and the latest loss put me in paranoid mode, and 2- it wasn't a great sign that Denard refused to talk after the game-not saying that's anything, but still not a great sign given #1 above, for me anyway

this friggin jabroni has no idea what its like to be part of a team. he had heart surgery as a child and has never been able to play teeball let alone d1 anything.i truelly believe this has made him bitter and hatefull. he gets paid to generate opinions and thats what he does. hes very aware of what hes doing when he writes thes columns ."one is likely gone after the season" made me lol .can you imagine if every kid that was a back up transfered? he acts like its some surprise that we have two qb's, and denard has some how been blindsided by all of this. this guy should really be taken to task SOON

Michigan, to my knowledge, was the only top-level school recruiting him to play QB. Florida said that they'd have a "package" for him. He was listed as a CB on Rivals or Scout or both (I can't remember)...Anyway, I envy sports columnists. It would be great to have a job that can be done competently while smoking opium on a regular basis.

Why is Robinson more likely to be the long-term solution due to his size? Both Robinson and Forcier are small-ish. That statement is ridiculous.

Think of it this way. Reading Drew Sharp is just like poking yourself in the eyes with a "sharp" knife. Poking yourself in the eyes adds as much clarity to your knowledge of the world as reading Drew and provides about as much pain. Just let it go.

On these sorts of predictions/speculations. Unfortunately that would mean reading through a bunch of Sharp's columns, and frankly the guy irritates the hell out of me even on those rare occasions when I agree with him.

It's his point to stir the point and bring up subjective opinions. He isn't a reporter, this is what columnists do for a living. They are paid to write an opinion hoping to generate interest/arguments in the paper so people continue to buy the paper to see what the columnist is going to say next. Look at how many posts have been applied to this topic. I would say he has done his job pretty well since some of us are so mad we are picking on his heart condition as a child. Everyone knows he is going to blast UM at every opportunity, it has been his MO for years, just ignore it. I personally don't care for his work, but what is the big deal about this.
