That seems like it will end up totally uncoordinated as sound at the south endzone will arrive way after the sound at the north endzone. Or have they set it up so there are speakers everywhere now?  If the speakers are still mostly north endzone, the lights won't sync for the stadium as a whole.  That said, if the lights do all sync, the lights won't sync with the music for those in the south endzone, but it will at least look right in the stadium / on TV.

This may not work at all as expected.

New director of game day ops has really crapped the bed this year with the whole dj thing.  Maybe it will be better after the new scoreboards — too much forced tradition making songs that worked at a certain place and time be entire Michigan themes now.

I feel like the whole Mr. Brightside thing is organically "ours" and unique.  So I dont have a problem with them forcing it a little too much.  It's one of those things that visiting fans arent aware of if theyve never been and is a neat little something.

But this season does feel kind of weird for in game experience.  I guess I dont really get the Wolf of Wall street thing and that seems forced.  And the DJ during the PSU game was really bad

I'm of two minds about this.

While I love the new Mr Brightside tradition and this is a fun way to celebrate it, I can't help but recall that the song became a thing *during* the 2017 MSU game.

Which was also a night game and where "I just can't look it's killing meeee" was pretty much what we were all thinking about the offense that night

As I'm already in Bolivia for absent-mindedly reposting Yoder, I do not fear the negs.  Thus the following!

Mr. Brightside is one of the best songs of the aughts.  The music, which is what Michigan fans have gravitated toward, is catchy, enthusiastic, energetic.  But that's the music.  The lyrics behind the anthemic tune and the stirring choruses, are a sad story about a man who is obsessed with a girl that is seeing another man… and the thoughts that go through his head, imagining what they’re doing behind closed doors…  Not quite rousing, college football inspiring words.

So as evidence that I have too much time on my hands, here are lyrics that in my likely flawed and terrible opinion, would be better suited for a Michigan anthem.  If anyone has edits, share!  Aside from the obvious edit which is that this is all terrible and should be deleted immediately.

Coming out of our cage
And Wolverines to the line
Gotta get a first down
Don’t wanna punt at all

It started it out with a kick
How did we end up with six?
It was over a pick
That became a pick six

Now we’re calling a keep
And our backs zig and zag
While their line’s getting smoked
And we’re starting to brag

Now their offense is dead
And their coaches are sick
And we’re inside their heads
But we crush their QB now

He’s under distress now
Hit him low
And I’m feeling shook, we’re thrilling me
We’re taking control

Wolverines, turning State into debris
Crushing Lions and Buckeyes
Smoking all their stupid guys

Michigan’s alright I say
My destiny this Fall’s Indy
Open up my maize blue eyes
Cause I’m with the right side

Forever
Forever
Forever
Forever

Maybe let’s not do it right before an opponent’s pivotal 4th down this time like we did against PSU. Or the students trying to do a wave when people should’ve been getting loud on defense.

Nothing says "Michigan fan" like some guy whining plaintively about a former girlfriend who's now screwing some other guy. Really inspiring music.

I'm sure I'll get neggd to death for this but the whole Mr.Brightside is so cringe to me. I'm not even sure what it is or why.  Keep in mind I'm a 50 yo man's man. But I'm all for anything that hypes up our crowd and team. And if everyone likes it I'm all for it! But in all truth I would just as much the whole crowd sing in unison to Naughty by Nature's OPP 😂😂

Can someone explain the whole Mr. Brightside thing to me? If it helps you in your explanation, I am 57 and graduated with a degree in economics from Michigan in 1986.  So, maybe use small words and few current cultural references? I don't know, I just don't get it.

Re: those asking for an explanation of why Mr. Brightside has caught on:

If you weren’t there for the organic beginning of this tradition (2017 MSU), I suppose it could be hard to explain. I’ve been going to games since the 90s and I have never seen a Michigan Stadium crowd so committed to the cause in a loss before or since that night, and in a torrential downpour to boot. When the DJ cut the song off so the play could start and the crowd kept the song going, it was a surreal and completely organic moment (rare these days) and I think a little piece of that moment lives on each time the song is sung. The students love it and participate heartily and that’s really all that is necessary to keep something going.

I really don’t think there’s a need to dive deep into the lyrics to find some sort of metaphorical parallel between Michigan’s years in the championship/OSU desert and the jilted lover thing (though I do think the fans put a little more into the “destiny is calling me” line last year). It’s just a song that happens to be very popular across multiple demographics, and we get to do it together and in full voice. It feels a little more like English soccer passion and a little less like a minor league hockey gimmick. My guess is it’ll be around for many years to come.

Mine didn't work in the stadium even though I had all the permissions enabled.  Just sat there on "waiting to sync."  Pretty disappointing.
