Special appearance by Brandon Flowers?
otherwise, this feels too much like the Dave Brandon era.
October 28th, 2022 at 1:35 PM ^
Of course
You've been coming out of your cage
I heard you're doing just fine
I heard you gotta gotta be down
Because you want it all
October 28th, 2022 at 2:01 PM ^
started out with a knish
how did it end up like this
it was only a knish
(it was only a knish)
October 28th, 2022 at 2:36 PM ^
Dave Brandon Flowers?
October 28th, 2022 at 4:22 PM ^
They've been doing this at other events too. Went to a recent volleyball game and they had the lightshow you could sync up to. I wouldn't exactly call it Dave Brandon era since it doesn't exactly make any money and that's all that man was about.
October 28th, 2022 at 1:37 PM ^
This will be fun! For all those that don't know the lyrics, practice, we're talking practice....
October 28th, 2022 at 1:37 PM ^
Unless the Killers are there performing during the light show, the whole thing feels like hype for no reason.
October 28th, 2022 at 1:37 PM ^
Can't wait to do this while up 35 in the 2nd quarter
October 28th, 2022 at 1:38 PM ^
I hear JJ McCarthy won the starting job too!
October 28th, 2022 at 1:39 PM ^
Whoahhhhhh Nelly!!!
October 28th, 2022 at 1:39 PM ^
I haven't been to a home game in years. Does that mean their wifi issues are a thing of the past?
October 28th, 2022 at 1:47 PM ^
No. It looks like the app is listening for cues using the microphone.
If this required signal or WiFi, it wouldn't have a prayer of working.
October 28th, 2022 at 4:29 PM ^
That seems like it will end up totally uncoordinated as sound at the south endzone will arrive way after the sound at the north endzone. Or have they set it up so there are speakers everywhere now? If the speakers are still mostly north endzone, the lights won't sync for the stadium as a whole. That said, if the lights do all sync, the lights won't sync with the music for those in the south endzone, but it will at least look right in the stadium / on TV.
This may not work at all as expected.
October 28th, 2022 at 1:42 PM ^
Weak sauce. If they're going to do this, I was really hoping for something like USC (ntusc) does:
October 28th, 2022 at 1:49 PM ^
The only part of South Carolina's presentation that is particularly unique is the use of Sandstorm. I swear too many places are trying to strobe light their way to engagement that it's hard to take in.
October 28th, 2022 at 1:59 PM ^
Womp.
As if the download our app so we can control your phone's flashlight for a "lightshow" approach is so much more clever and unique. But maybe that appeals to some people. To each their own, including you.
October 28th, 2022 at 1:46 PM ^
Yeah 110k phones all trying to sync at the same time. Surely it will work this time!
October 28th, 2022 at 1:48 PM ^
There's no reason it shouldn't work, since the app presumably has the light patterns embedded in it. It's just waiting for the right audio cue. Think Shazam.
October 28th, 2022 at 1:48 PM ^
New director of game day ops has really crapped the bed this year with the whole dj thing. Maybe it will be better after the new scoreboards — too much forced tradition making songs that worked at a certain place and time be entire Michigan themes now.
October 28th, 2022 at 2:00 PM ^
I feel like the whole Mr. Brightside thing is organically "ours" and unique. So I dont have a problem with them forcing it a little too much. It's one of those things that visiting fans arent aware of if theyve never been and is a neat little something.
But this season does feel kind of weird for in game experience. I guess I dont really get the Wolf of Wall street thing and that seems forced. And the DJ during the PSU game was really bad
October 28th, 2022 at 4:11 PM ^
Yes, stop trying to make the Wolf of Wall Street chest thump thing a thing. Love the movie but it feels totally forced.
October 28th, 2022 at 2:02 PM ^
Good thing there's a WWE announcer to tell us how to do the "Go Blue" cheer and spell M-I-C-H-I-G-A-N during media timeouts.
October 28th, 2022 at 3:01 PM ^
This. I actually don't mind having a DJ on the field as he just plays music like before. But THIS guy, the "MC" is beyond annoying and completely unnecessary. No one needs Duff Man telling the crowd how to say Go Blue.
October 28th, 2022 at 3:22 PM ^
Agreed 100%. I can't imagine how anyone thought--and continues to think--that it's a good idea.
October 28th, 2022 at 3:36 PM ^
Agree completely as he is unnecessary and totally useless. I know how to say Go Blue you ass!
October 28th, 2022 at 2:05 PM ^
I'm of two minds about this.
While I love the new Mr Brightside tradition and this is a fun way to celebrate it, I can't help but recall that the song became a thing *during* the 2017 MSU game.
Which was also a night game and where "I just can't look it's killing meeee" was pretty much what we were all thinking about the offense that night
October 28th, 2022 at 2:25 PM ^
As I'm already in Bolivia for absent-mindedly reposting Yoder, I do not fear the negs. Thus the following!
Mr. Brightside is one of the best songs of the aughts. The music, which is what Michigan fans have gravitated toward, is catchy, enthusiastic, energetic. But that's the music. The lyrics behind the anthemic tune and the stirring choruses, are a sad story about a man who is obsessed with a girl that is seeing another man… and the thoughts that go through his head, imagining what they’re doing behind closed doors… Not quite rousing, college football inspiring words.
So as evidence that I have too much time on my hands, here are lyrics that in my likely flawed and terrible opinion, would be better suited for a Michigan anthem. If anyone has edits, share! Aside from the obvious edit which is that this is all terrible and should be deleted immediately.
Coming out of our cage
And Wolverines to the line
Gotta get a first down
Don’t wanna punt at all
It started it out with a kick
How did we end up with six?
It was over a pick
That became a pick six
Now we’re calling a keep
And our backs zig and zag
While their line’s getting smoked
And we’re starting to brag
Now their offense is dead
And their coaches are sick
And we’re inside their heads
But we crush their QB now
He’s under distress now
Hit him low
And I’m feeling shook, we’re thrilling me
We’re taking control
Wolverines, turning State into debris
Crushing Lions and Buckeyes
Smoking all their stupid guys
Michigan’s alright I say
My destiny this Fall’s Indy
Open up my maize blue eyes
Cause I’m with the right side
Forever
Forever
Forever
Forever

This may be rambling nonsense, but hey - at least you’re not suggesting intentionally injuring kids. Progress, amirite!?!?!?
October 28th, 2022 at 2:29 PM ^
Win and win big. This is a distraction
October 28th, 2022 at 2:44 PM ^
It's fan interaction and entertainment.
October 28th, 2022 at 6:52 PM ^
A distraction to who? The players aren't doing it
October 28th, 2022 at 10:24 PM ^
Agreed. Anything that increases fan interaction and noise is a negative. We all need to be quiet during the entire game so as to not distract the team.
October 28th, 2022 at 2:48 PM ^
Maybe let’s not do it right before an opponent’s pivotal 4th down this time like we did against PSU. Or the students trying to do a wave when people should’ve been getting loud on defense.
October 28th, 2022 at 4:47 PM ^
Yah that wave timing vs PSU was very amateur .
October 28th, 2022 at 3:09 PM ^
If this keeps the student section around a while longer during the blowout, then I'm all for it.
October 28th, 2022 at 4:44 PM ^
Nothing says "Michigan fan" like some guy whining plaintively about a former girlfriend who's now screwing some other guy. Really inspiring music.
October 28th, 2022 at 5:23 PM ^
I really do not understand the lasting appeal of this song. At all.
October 29th, 2022 at 2:00 AM ^
I don’t understand even a short-lived appeal of this song. It’s self-indulgent emo junk.
October 29th, 2022 at 4:42 PM ^
I don't disagree that a literal textual reading of the song suggests that it's antithetical to a football anthem, but if you really think about it. Mr Brightside is about BPONE so it's nothing if not on-brand for us
October 28th, 2022 at 4:45 PM ^
I'm sure I'll get neggd to death for this but the whole Mr.Brightside is so cringe to me. I'm not even sure what it is or why. Keep in mind I'm a 50 yo man's man. But I'm all for anything that hypes up our crowd and team. And if everyone likes it I'm all for it! But in all truth I would just as much the whole crowd sing in unison to Naughty by Nature's OPP 😂😂
October 28th, 2022 at 6:58 PM ^
Can someone explain the whole Mr. Brightside thing to me? If it helps you in your explanation, I am 57 and graduated with a degree in economics from Michigan in 1986. So, maybe use small words and few current cultural references? I don't know, I just don't get it.

Re: those asking for an explanation of why Mr. Brightside has caught on:
If you weren’t there for the organic beginning of this tradition (2017 MSU), I suppose it could be hard to explain. I’ve been going to games since the 90s and I have never seen a Michigan Stadium crowd so committed to the cause in a loss before or since that night, and in a torrential downpour to boot. When the DJ cut the song off so the play could start and the crowd kept the song going, it was a surreal and completely organic moment (rare these days) and I think a little piece of that moment lives on each time the song is sung. The students love it and participate heartily and that’s really all that is necessary to keep something going.
I really don’t think there’s a need to dive deep into the lyrics to find some sort of metaphorical parallel between Michigan’s years in the championship/OSU desert and the jilted lover thing (though I do think the fans put a little more into the “destiny is calling me” line last year). It’s just a song that happens to be very popular across multiple demographics, and we get to do it together and in full voice. It feels a little more like English soccer passion and a little less like a minor league hockey gimmick. My guess is it’ll be around for many years to come.
October 28th, 2022 at 9:17 PM ^
Thank you. This is great context.
October 29th, 2022 at 1:35 AM ^
Well yeah, I mean if you are going to like actually explain it, and not just rant for no reason… but, sometimes you just don’t want people on your lawn, its your lawn not theirs.
October 29th, 2022 at 1:54 AM ^
It IS very impressive how the 100,000+ crowd keeps the song going in perfect unison when the music is cut off.
It will forever be the theme song of the pivotal win over Ohio State and the Big Ten Championship Game.
It's our thing.
October 29th, 2022 at 1:00 AM ^
Ditch the song and do a Thriller drone show
October 30th, 2022 at 12:49 PM ^
Mine didn't work in the stadium even though I had all the permissions enabled. Just sat there on "waiting to sync." Pretty disappointing.
