This makes me sad. There haven’t been any truly great commercials in years.
February 6th, 2021 at 10:22 AM ^
The Bill Murray/Groundhog Day Jeep ad was fantastic. Also enjoyed the Bridgestone tire ad where the beaver saves the guy from the bridge that was wiped out and the Doritos/time machine commercial.
Bud Bowls were awesome, though.

It’s going to be even worse this year. A lot of big name advertisers have already backed out this year because they’re afraid of sending the wrong message or offending people while we’ve got a pandemic going on, along with all the social unrest and political discord that’s gone on the last year.
Get ready for a year of sanitized, PC commercials because hey, let’s not hurt anyone’s feelings. The only thing that might redeem the commercials this year are good movie trailers or if somehow Rockstar makes a GTA 6 announcement.

I'm surprised the Chiefs get to keep their name. May be the half time show will unveil their new team name.
February 6th, 2021 at 2:58 PM ^
To me there's a significant difference between Chiefs and Redskins/Indians. The former is a specific tribal position whereas the latter is a blanket term for an entire race of people.
It's something like the difference to calling a team the Kings vs. calling them the Europeans/Whiteskins.

I spent some of my advertising career working on Super Bowl commercials. This was back in the 90's and I worked in the group that did all the most memorable Anheuser Busch spots -- I Love You Man, Whassup, etc...These spots cost a ton to produce and then the airtime is crazy expensive. It is possible they didn't want to spend that kind of money this year, when people are struggling. It's not difficult to make ads that are entertaining without being controversial or un-PC. In fact, companies the size of Anheuser Busch or McDonald's never ok spots that are un-PC. They don't need or want the negative publicity. It's not about the messages, but more about the money.

RIP Keith Jackson, the GOAT broadcaster

On my phone, so I can’t imbed. But this is my favorite Super Bowl commercial … nay, favorite commercial of all time, period.

WASSSUPPP as annoying as it is now, it was fun back then.
Also, the automaker/Detroit commercials after the bailouts had a lot of nostalgia. The Chrysler Eminem commercial. GM had a "we still build rockets" one not long after as well (my dad was a GM lifer).
February 6th, 2021 at 10:23 AM ^
The Eminem - Chrysler 200 - Imported from Detroit was my favorite, especially since I worked for a Chrysler dealership at the time.

I have personally never been a Chrysler/Dodge auto fan during my entire life. But I was tempted to run out to my nearest dealer and buy one after seeing that commercial for the first time. That one was pure mood. It encapsulated the spirit of Detroit perfectly.

Still gives me the chills
February 6th, 2021 at 11:14 AM ^
Wow, that was 10 years ago already?
February 6th, 2021 at 12:53 PM ^
Iconic commercial paired with an awful vehicle. I know they were pimping the arrival of the 200, but they should've scrapped that idea and just showcased the 300 instead.
And they should've asked Suh for a cameo.

Still gotta go with 1984.

Clint Eastwood’s Detroit “It’s Halftime, America” commercial from about ten years ago was awesome.

Unpopular opinion: Super Bowl commercials were never that good.
Although I admit even I have my favorites.

Wait... I thought Keith Jackson died. Now he's in Super Bowl commercials!? I kid, I kid...
February 6th, 2021 at 11:54 AM ^
The Duraliner truck bed liner commercial from 1986 may have been the best investment a small company ever made in a Super Bowl commercial. Big risk, big reward.
February 6th, 2021 at 11:56 AM ^
Bud Bowl for me as well. First thing I think of when I think Super Bowl commercials.
February 6th, 2021 at 11:56 AM ^
The commercials the past few years have been terrible - overly sanitized because advertisers are afraid of offending anyone, formulaic of past commercial success (celeb cameo, animals, etc.) and generally just not that creative. Obviously there have been some exceptions that worked.
February 6th, 2021 at 12:22 PM ^
Are any of the better Superbowl advertisements or the past now considered offensive? Multiple people have brought up that being too PC is part of why commercials suck now, but it's not like the Budweiser frogs were racist in retrospect or something...
February 6th, 2021 at 12:47 PM ^
That was not funny. All the older funny commercials or sexy commercials are gone. Even 10 years ago you could see a sexy godaddy commercial but now they're way toned down.
February 6th, 2021 at 8:04 PM ^
I commented above on this. Large companies like Anheuser Busch have never done controversial spots. I don't know what people are talking about when they say advertisers are afraid of being un-PC. That's just not accurate. It's never been a thing. The lack of good spots is because current creatives do mostly digital and not enough television, and don't know how to tell good stories. The death of good advertising is lamentable, especially by the people who used to do the great spots. Advertising is just a different animal now and it has nothing to do with wokeness.

Really looking forward to seeing the Dominos ad with Denny Hamlin and the young girl, "Hamlin, I like your PJ's!" for the umpteenth time.
I may just chew my arm off and beat myself with it.

Running of the squirrels in Pamplona and monkey cowboy ghost town (post-dot com bust, pimentoloaf.com). Both 2001 it seems.
February 6th, 2021 at 1:07 PM ^
When I think of Super Bowl commercials, Clydesdales and Doritos immediately come to mind, but one I really liked and always remember is the weiner dogs running in the field towards the humans dressed as Heinz bottles, as "Without You" is playing.
February 6th, 2021 at 1:26 PM ^
There’s just little creativity in Super Bowl ads anymore. It’s random celebrity in a completely WACKY situation and that’s the spot. That’s it. The game is getting a big name, not writing a good bit.
February 6th, 2021 at 2:23 PM ^
Mostly true, but sometimes they really hit it out of the park. Willem Dafoe as Marilyn Monroe for Snickers springs to mind.
