More B1G expansion talks

It was reported yesterday that Oregon and Washington had applied to be part of the Big Ten yesterday. Seems like Big Ten is going to make the decision on future adds based on how talks with ND go (as in ND + 1 or ND +3 or no ND and B1G looks at more PAC 12 and ACC schools). ND makes a lot of sense in terms of geography and rivalries and would also add another huge alumni fan base and possibly more TV deals on NBC.

I couldn't agree with Fuck ND more.

That's why I'm torn...ND to B1G makes so much sense and would obviously greatly benefit everyone involved. But, I am also rooting against it. I have realized my desire to see them fade into irrelevance exceeds my desire to get to play them more often (which would be awesome). The more these conferences grow, the less ND will matter if they remain unaffiliated (I am aware of the semi-affiliation with the ACC), and that makes me super happy.

I actually want to see us outclass the SEC more than I hate ND. Not only that, but much of what I hate about ND goes by the boards if they have to shut up, sh*tcan the lame independent hoohoo, and just be another team in an enormous conference. Prima donna no more--I say bring it.

The longer this mega conference competition goes, the higher ND’s stock goes.

I think they’d be a great addition to the B1G from a ratings, revenue, geography, tradition, and cache standpoint. Buuut…narcissism.  It makes for a terrible partner. Trust me on this.

I don’t see them being a good fit in the SEC; seems to me that their natural place is the B1G. Maybe the best thing to hope for is that hubris and overextending their hand leaves them without a date a week before prom, and the conference negotiates skillfully. Otherwise, we could regret ever talking to them.

Notre dame isn't as important of a piece as some are making them out to be. I would leave them out and establish footprints in Florida, Virginia, Atlanta, Tennessee, Texas, Missouri, Colorado, Arizona Oregon and the Bay area. Then, sprinkle in some basketball blue bloods like UNC, Duke and Kansas. The Irish and everyone else will be begging us to join.

The way to do that is play them and beat the crap out of them, preferably every single time!  and frequently!  Presumably the way to make that happen would be to require ND to play M frequently and show why they are the lesser program.

Notre Dame can rot in hell. I loathe the thought of begging the prima donna of college football to join and bowing to all of their special exceptions they would require.

Gladly take Oregon & Washington.

Same.

I would accept ND if they were willing to drop their semi Indy status and had equal footing with other conference schools. But I have no interest in pussyfooting around with unique carve out exemptions.

But as a Portland resident, I'm strongly in favor of seeing Michigan play in Oregon and Washington every few years.

That is all.

Isn’t ND tied to that ACC ironclad contract that runs for like 10 more years?

If so, the Big Ten will be waiting on the Irish for a long ass time.

Why won't the ACC exist?  If their Grant Of Rights is strong enough to keep Clemson and FSU from joining the SEC....then it seems like they can survive (albeit with less money than B1G or SEC).  If Clemson and FSU make the jump...then all bets are off. It'll be interesting to see how strong the GOR is.

My preference, in the tradition of "to hell with Notre Dame" would be to pick up Oregon and Washington in the West and UNC and UVA in the East.  That would give the B1G additional coast-to-coast coverage...along with four of the top five public schools in the country.

The discussion of ACC schools gets circular very fast. Nobody can leave because of the grant of rights, but if there are public signals that defections are imminent, then the grant of rights doesn't matter because there's diminishing revenue in the conference.

I think the ACC member schools with clout will see the writing on the wall in the next 2 months and the lawyers will get together to create an out for schools that want to leave. The $ schools can undermine the value of the ACC very easily through words. After that, it's in everyone's interest to negotiate. There may be a short-term penalty for them, but for the NDs and Clemsons it is a no brainer to get out ASAP.

ACC won’t exist because they’re (likely) going to be cannibalized by the SEC and possibly the B1G.

There’s really nothing the ACC can do to keep up with the B1G and SEC. So is it not more likely that schools like Clemson, FSU and Miami will panic and beg to be let into the SEC to avoid being left out of the football power struggle?

GOR loses it’s power with multiple teams trying to leave

Exactly.

The SEC and B16 now own college football or call it the birth of the "Big 2". This is just the beginning.

These two alliances can dictate whatever the hell they want. Most likely is holding their own CFP playoff where they keep all of the money, dictate who gets into the CFP. To add, they will seize the best talent, best coaches, and unworldly television contracts. They control the money and they cortrol the game. These two conferences will be powerful enough to tell the NCAA to fuck-off.

Now if Clemson, FSU, Miami etc want to be loyal to the GOR & play their games on ESPN+ with an opportunity to go to the Denny's Palmetto Bowl more power to them, but that ain't happening. They'll hi-jack a lifeboat at gunpoint at their first opportunity.

Yeah I don’t really envision a scenario where those three schools specifically are okay being left out. Without those three, the ACC becomes irrelevant (in football) and GOR folds as the remaining schools try into find some semblance of relevancy in the new landscape.

Schools like Duke and UNC will receive interest, while schools like Syracuse and Wake Forest fall back to irrelevance. But it’s hard to envision the ACC making it out of this alive if the B16 and SEC continue this bidding war.

F Notre Dame.  Why even give them the preference.  They clearly don’t want to be in a competitive conference anyway.

B1G should only allow ND to join the conference if they promise to get rid of their fucking mascot. I swear I've never wanted to punch anyone more in my entire life.

I hate ND as much as the next guy, but I would love to see them in the Big 10 and reduced to mediocrity like Nebraska by having to play a lot more tough competition instead of 2 or 3 good teams each year.
