Mlive Piece Strongly Critical of Delany

Submitted by bluebyyou on

Baumgardner wrote a good piece that strongly criticizes Delany for his passive stance on summer camps and how the SEC continues to get its way.

http://www.mlive.com/wolverines/index.ssf/2016/04/column_jim_delanys_pa…

The bigger issue here is conference vs. conference. Big Ten vs. SEC.

The SEC has dominated college football on the field for a decade. And Friday afternoon, it scored another win -- just because it could.

League members expressed concern over an issue -- regardless of how legitimate that concern was (in this case, it wasn't) -- and the SEC's power players went to bat for them. They did it again this winter when Harbaugh announced his plans to take Michigan to Florida for spring break.

And, again, same thing. Sankey slammed the table for days over the issue. Did his arguments always make sense? No, not really. But he stood up and fought for his league, just like he did in the satellite camp saga.

Delany? The only time he really ever touched on the topic came a year ago this month, when he made a claim that the NCAA has bigger fish to fry than satellite camps. Point taken. Point ended.

Here's what Delaney should have said:

"SEC coaches continue to hold on to their plantation mentality.  They feel they own local recruits and do not want them to receive beneficial exposure.  Jim Harbaugh wants to liberate these recruits and give them maximum exposure.  That way the recruits will receive an opportunity to better themselves."

Instead we got his usual drivel.  Time to go JD.

And not every insult needs to be about genitals. I mean...can we get a little creative here? Also if being respectful to other board members is PC, I don't see why that'd be a bad thing. It's one of the main reasons why we don't talk religion and politics on here, yet comments like this slide constantly.

Ok? Good argument.

Look I've been a part of this little online community of Michigan & college football fans for about 10 years now and I never remember it being this full of immature and generally rude comments. There are plenty of females that frequent this board (myself included) and I don't think it's a lot to ask that we keep the conversations respectful and non-RCMB-like (hence why no bewb photos, no NSFW photos, no politics or religion policy). So to see someone rather politely criticizing the use of such language to be told to "Shut Up" is just disheartening and unnecessary.

I like reading Nick's columns.  He's reasonably thorough and not too biased, just calls it straight.

I agree. I also enjoy how he gives it back to people on Twitter. Sometimes he might get a little full of himself, but mostly he is level headed, fair to the program, and he gives his honest opinions in his columnist features.

I've wanted him fired since he fought to allow cheaters to play in a bowl game.  The only school Pointy Haired Boss ever does anything for is OSU.  Aside from that, I cannot point to one single thing that he did that benefitted the league in some national way.  Expanding?  Big deal - you either did that or you ended up like the Big East.  And so we have Rutgers - that's a win?  He has long outlived his usefulness and needs to go away.

looks like a bunch of spineless cowards. Delany never stood up for Michigan in this whole process, and now he's speaking like a little bitch. I hope the Michigan atheletic department swears Delany as an enemy for abandoning us like this.

But it's going to take a bit of research by the attorneys to make sure they have their ducks in a row. Even if the lawsuit is somehow lost  it can tie them up for a few years, get in their heads further.

An antitrust suit is what has piqued my interest as a possible remedy as the NCAA's action would seem to eliminate opportunities for recruits and could be seen as anti-competitive.  I work on the patent side of the IP world and really don't feel comfy with antitrust issues. It would be great if someone with an antitrust background would share their thoughts.

Delany has been good for one thing, and that is making money for the conference.  Beyond that, he doesn't represent the B1G well and that's a shame.

I just checked Twitter and Harbaugh hasn't posted a comment about the ban. Don't know what to make of it.

I also wonder what Mr. Manuel's thoughts are on the subject.

"(Coaches will) pick up recruitment; satellite camps are off the table, but presumably everything else is on it. "

Can someone nudge the coaching staffs at Rutgers, Purdue, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, maybe even Iowa, Penn State and Wisconsin, and let them know about this "pick up recruitment" thing?

Fitz showed up to our events and has been working on his own as well. Can't believe I'm about to defend Franklin/PSU, but I believe he had PSU doing similar camps as well.

as he did show at a Harbaugh camp last summer.  Northwestern does have some hurdles in place (in regards to recruiting) that most B1G schools don't have to deal with, so I suppose Fitzgerald does pretty well, though not Stanford-well.

Franklin, though?  No defending that asshat.

We now have Rutgers in our conference. Thank you, oh great puppet-master Delany.

F him.

Thanks for posting this - good article.

lives in NYC. Everytime Delany mentions Rutgers' impact in NYC, he just laughs.

Rutgers is to NYC like the Toledo Rockets are to Detroit. If you didn't go to school there, you simply don't care.

Only difference is that Toledo is decent at football.

Haven't lived in Michigan in a long time, but don't recall ever seeing Rockets bars in Detroit, or people gathering for Rockets viewing parties.

I'm sure it's a fine school, and have heard their games are fun.

Nobody in Detroit cares about Eastern either. Oops, now i've insulted Eagles fans.

BTW, why didn't Eastern adopt the nickname "Emus" when they changed from Hurons?  Much more fun than Eagles. Mascot could have put them on the map, and sold some gear.

I was at the 2008 Toledo game. Only good thing about that day (besides the weather) were the two 20-something Toledo fans sitting behind us. They were great. They really knew their team and had a great gallows humor. When the game was over one of them said, "We f--king won?"

Years ago....
They picked "Eagles"--most common nickname in the country to hurriedly cremate the one-of- a- kind "Hurons"....I used to go see them sometimes--but not once since that weak decision to bury age old traditions.
Current NY Mets Manager Terry Collins played on an EMU National Championship team for the "Hurons"--not the generic nickname....
PC correct pressures will never leave college campuses but change for changes same is sometimes just

Reminds me of Bo's famous comment about getting screwed out of the Rose Bowl. Seriously, isn't having your interests represented one of the big positives of being in a conference? I don't really see any downside to him defending the principle here, and am more than a little incensed he's not.

On the plus side, I'm sure Harbaugh has thought this through and is thoroughly inside the SEC's OODA loop. Look forward to his next three or four innovations he's planning in response.

The Big Ten has tried to get an early signing period through for some time now. The SEC doesn't want it. It hasn't happened. Remember those nine-game schedules? Yeah, the Big Ten agreed to get on board while the SEC refused. Remember that whole "we're not longer going to play FCS schools?" Again, the SEC opted out, the Big Ten watched.

I know we've had discussions on the board about these topics too, and Nick is right - these are other instances where it seemed like the upper management of our conference sat there and either took a beating that it didn't need to take or just didn't advocate as vigorously as it should have. It does start with the leadership of the conference and I am a bit tired of having to accept it quite honestly.

The coaches in the Big Ten may need to pick up this torch, but I wonder who would other than Harbaugh, who would find ways to make this work regardless.

Great quote...I was just about to post it.

I do think that in a way Michigan's success is dependent on the leadership of the conference (and its members). This action serves as a reminder that we can't operate in a vacuum. Most people aren't surprised satellite camps would be banned at some point, but we just didn't expect it to go down this way or this quickly.

Warde Manuel needs to step in and forcefully support Harbaugh's position to send a message to Delany.

This isn't even about money anymore. If it were about money the NCAA would want to cultivate an environment where there is more parity. All this does is allow the rich to get richer.

Baumgartner isnt in Valentis league but he always does have at least one line that lets you know hes Spartythru and thru in everything he writes.

"Let's be clear: Satellite camps aren't a huge deal. They weren't the biggest issue facing college football at the moment. And contrary to popular opinion in Ann Arbor, Harbaugh doesn't have a God-given right to get his way all the time. Stuff happens and, yeah, you do have to move on."
