Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning - Part 1 [No Spoilers]
Mates,
Youngest daughter called me Friday and wanted to 'take'* me to the newest Mission Impossible movie, Dead Reckoning - Part One. Of course as a parent you say 'yes' and I met her at a the local theatre. As promised, no spoilers.
You will see familiar faces to the M.I. franchise:
The bad guys were plausible, well cast, and the plot made sense in the genre of this type of film. As I'm fond of saying, 'it ain't Shakespeare', but it fit together well. The 'enemy' is called 'The Entity' and AI plays a big part of the movie.
Tom Cruise famously does his own stunts. There was very good action and creativity in the overall movie.
I don't go to many movies, but I did enjoy this one.
Questions:
1. Have you seen it, and if so, what type of review would you give?
2. If you haven't seen it yet, do you plan on going?
XM
*That still means dad pays, but dad doesn't mind one bit.
SPOILER: Tom Cruise survives.
I’m looking at the OP’s picture. Is that Urban Meyer on the right? You know, sad Urban looking up from a pizza.
I don't see the resemblance....
at this point they should really rebrand as like Mission: Largely Plausible
Saw it yesterday with my 15 year old daughter who’s recently become a big MI fan. First one I’ve seen in the theatre since MI 1…yeah I’m old. Both of us enjoyed it. Intense nonstop action (could’ve gone for a few breaks in the action honestly). Good story, little eerie considering current real world events
Dude, you stole my avatar.
That Tommy C. Just saw the new Top Gun last night, and holy cow, what a movie. He is a weird dude but also a national treasure, and a really nice guy. I’m sure this Mission Impossible will be great like the last 3 or 4, can’t wait. I can only wonder what would’ve happened to his trajectory if he would’ve won supporting Oscar for Magnolia like he should’ve. Maybe it’s exactly the same and frankly that’s fine by me
Weird dude or not, let me just say I'm old enough to respect the hell out of the fact he does his own stunts. I mean, I'm over here wishing I had a stunt double to mow the frickin' lawn for me....
My grandfather was well I his late 80s and still mowing his lawn. When I asked if wants to cut mine, he said that I should be over and cutting his. I told him I don’t even like cutting my own lawn and that he lives to far. I also said that there is no way I’m cutting my lawn when I’m his age.
I told him I thought it was great that he still cut his lawn and his response was, “Thanks that’s very kind but it also gets me away from your Grandmother for awhile.”
Pretty reliably, lack of mobility is the beginning of the end for most of our elderly citizens. Keep mowing that lawn, my brother.
If lawn mowing is the plot of Mission Impossible 12, and the villain is one of Tom's ex wives, count me in on #8-11 and likely #12.
That describes my late father to a "T". I drove up to visit my folks one day about a dozen years ago and when I arrived, there's my dad up on the roof cleaning leaves out of the rain gutters.
Not all that unusual for him at....wait for it...age 85.
Anyway, I sorta scolded him and said let me finish the job for you, his answer: "Nope, I'm almost finished, if you want to make yourself useful see if your mother has some chores for you ..."
Nobody was going to tell Dad what or what not to do. So going inside, I mentioned the conversation to Mom. Her reaction? "He wouldn't listen to me either!"
LOL "See if your mother has some chores for you." Trolled by your 85 year old dad.
1. Yes. I’d place it, maybe, 4th in the franchise behind 1) M:I, 2) M:I Ghost Protocol, 3) M:I Rogue Nation, but before 5) M:I Fallout, 6) M:I 3, and 7) M:I 2.
I’d probably rate it a 6.5/10.
The well is definitely drying up… Hope they put a nail in its coffin with the next one.
First place goes to MI the TV show. With Peter Graves, Martin Landau, Barbara Bain, Leonard Nimoy, Steven Hill and a very young Sam Elliott. Among others. Original score by Lalo Schifrin.
Young Robbie thought it was the bomb in the late ‘60’s. Wouldn’t miss an episode.
Loved that show. Greg Morris had some cool gadget tech going on.
Yup. MI and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. were two shows I would never miss. I rate them equal.
I'd be watching if they ever do a reboot of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. For that matter, I'd be watching if there's ever a rebroadcast of the old TV episodes.
U.N.C.L.E. was one of my favorites back in the day but there's numerous episodes I've never seen---we were a one-TV family, 10 of us kids, and unless everyone's chores were done, Dad made sure the TV was off. Not to mention the same from Mom if my homework hadn't been completed, or TV shows that conflicted with bedtime...
Saw it Saturday night. Found it very entertaining. I have enjoyed this franchise and have found all the movies to be a fun sit back eat popcorn and just be entertained
Coming soon...
Mission Impossible XII: Escape from the Geriatric Ward
maybe, but give credit to the crazy 60 yr old who is still doing his own stunts. AFAIK, he did the motorcycle jump off a cliff, free-falled, and then pulled the chute to land. i don't care what age you are, that took some stones.
Not really a knock on Cruise but a knock on the endless movie sequels of some franchises. The second Top Gun was a *far* better movie than I was expecting, but... how many Mission Impossible sequels are they going to do - with weakening stories and plot details at every progression?
And that's not even approaching the level of frachises like Fast & Furious.
i haven't seen the other M.I.'s, or maybe a few minutes' worth on TV, but i can say this one was fun.
i will say the next franchise movie i will definitely go see is the second part of 'Dune'. one of my favorite books of all time. i read through the (then) 3 part series a couple of times when i was at U of M, the trailer looks excellent.
NEW Dune > Sting Dune.
I call it STING Dune because he is the only thing I want to remember from the original.
Tommy is weird but his MI series is great to watch. I would put Dead Reckoning I just behind MI3 with John Phillip Seymour.
I kinda disagree. This is the closest thing we've got to a legitimate James Bond series right now. I don't even think of them as "sequels" -- they're simply new adventures with familiar faces.
I'm not a huge Tom Cruise fan in the abstract, but his commitment to this series, and to the stunts, is awesome. I'm all in. Comparing the effects in this series — practical special effects compared to the CGI that dominates pretty much everything else right now, making everything look like a cartoon — to, for example, the new Indiana Jones movie demonstrates how cynical and craven most Hollywood movies are.
I dunno. Seems like the Mission Impossible movies are committed to giving us our money's worth, rather than just taking as much of it as they can, and I respect it.
(And, yes, the new one was really good — especially, I thought, the last 30 minutes).
Free-“falled” huh? Yeah, I’m gonna need to see the UM receipts…
Oh, and this is Hollywood, so, HGH, PRP, and things not even known to the general populace allow 60 year old men to do lots of things they couldn’t otherwise do…
And as far as stones, if you’re hopped up on adrenaline with a side of Xanax and a Valium chaser and all your profits go to Scientology, how much do you really care about the cliff dive.
I remember reading that he had to do that stunt like 4 or 5 times
And that they shot that stunt first so that they could scrap the movie if he was injured too badly to proceed with shooting the rest of the movie.
To me, Mission Impossible will always be Peter Graves, Greg Morris, Martin Landau, and Leonard Nimoy overthrowing foreign governments with actions that almost never involve ass-kicking, running around a lot, or riding motorcycles off cliffs. These Tom Cruise things are just loud expensive cartoons. But, hey, enjoy!
At some point a decade or so ago I just decided these are something different and stopped comparing them. I'm with you — I wish we could have a smart series of deception, intrigue, and subterfuge. This ain't it.
But on its own terms, it's a damned entertaining series!
I watched it every week. We're getting old, aren't we?
i bet you never missed an episode of this show:
That and the Planet of the Apes TV series.
I watched Mission Impossible every week with my mother and grandmother as a kid. That and Colombo were can't miss r.v.
Saw it Thursday at an IMAX. I'm a fan of the series and enjoyed it. Didn't realize there were fanboys out there. Had a few in the theater clap during certain parts. The lead female is stunning.
I’d give it an 8.5/10. Outstanding stunts and many moments that had you on the edge of your seat. Overall, it was impressive but a good forgettable summer movie. It did the job it was supposed to do. I’ll see part two when it comes out.
I just saw it this morning, a couple of comments:
- Long movie, 2 hours and 40+ minutes
- That being said, it moved at a good clip, didn't seem to drag too much - I ran out of M&Ms though, come packing
- This was / is part one, part two comes out next June
- Next June, will I remember all the details of part one - sure maybe they will summarize at the start
- Just freaking amazing that he does his own stunts, especially at the age of 61
Thanks! Not yet. No plans to "go"; Yes plans to "see". Stopped going to theatres a while ago.
Dad always pays - except on his birthday and Fathers Day until the kids start crushing their careers and want to strut their financial successes. I genuinely love that! 👍😁👍
Haven’t seen it. Don’t go to the theater. But might stream it one day down the road.
The wife and I saw it yesterday. Like, Wow! How does he do all that running and fighting and his dress shirt never comes untucked! I can’t even go to the buffet and keep my dress shirt tucked in.
Haven't seen too many of them. I saw the one with Henry Cavill a year or two back, not bad, but I don't remember being enthralled with it. In any case, like the Fast and Furious movies I keep getting surprised that they are still making more of these movies, but the reviews must be that good and people enjoy watching them, so as long as Cruise wants to keep doing it, then I guess why not?
He might be a weird dude, but when he gets on-screen, he seems to always knock it out of the park. That recent Mummy movie, aside. My god was that awful. The Brendan Fraser ones were really campy but they were at least entertaining. I wish Cruise just sat that reboot out.
I used to be a semi-big film buff before I had kids. I find it interesting that Tom Cruise is one of the few actors that people still come out to see (along with Chris Pratt and Denzel Washington). No one comes out to watch Tom Hanks or Julia Roberts anymore, and there really isn’t anyone young that will replace the older people. Timothee Chalamet maybe.
With AI and the recent rumblings as part of the strike in Hollywood, I’m sensing an imminent death of the traditional movie model. Will be interesting to watch how this plays out, and could be a movie in and of itself!!
They made a bunch of good movies about the 1950s black list (Trumbo, with Brian Cranston, was the best), so why not about striking writers and actors?
I only see one movie a year at theater (sometimes none). I am waiting for Oppenheimer. Hope they do a great job on it.
The most recent movie I’ve seen with Tom Cruise in it was Tropic Thunder, and I aim to keep it that way
I'll wat till M.I. is available in 3D. 3donlinemovies.com. Last several were, depth. This site was free now $1.00 or subscription, optional 2d as well. Avatar 1 and 2 by James Cameron was well received as his others. Moviestowatch.tv free, but 2D only until 3D is rendered.
The Dan Marino effect: I saw Dan Marino in Hawaii like 25 years ago. His legs were kind of mangled and he walked with a slight limp. I wonder if Tom Cruise will suffer from the same type of thing -- gets it together for the movies but due to all the hits and falls will eventually become a crumpled up old man in pain most of the time. I think stuntmen suffer from that malady.
I may have to go see this one. Until earlier this month, I hadn't been to a movie theater in about 4 years. (Concerts are more my thing; I had planned that day to see an evening outdoor concert of local musicians, including my cousin on her flute. It got rained out so I instead went to a concert movie "Ziggy Stardust".)
Both my daughters have birthdays this week. Odds are that they and my son wouldn't mind ol' dad paying the way for dinner and a night at the movies, popcorn, refreshments, etc...."ouch" says the wallet after seeing concession prices last week!
I plan to go see it in the theater. Yes, I will also be paying the way for my grown children who have jobs.
I saw it last night. I don't think it's the best one in the franchise, but it's among the better ones. Certainly an enjoyable action movie for the summer. Plot centered around AI is of course very timely, though naturally one shouldn't expect too much realism in the details.
I will say that Part 2 should be the last one in the franchise (before the inevitable reboot 5-10 years later). Tom's age is starting to show, and you don't wanna go down the Indiana Jones road.
