Mike Farrell (Rivals) on Michigan Recruiting

Submitted by Dreisbach1817 on

It's something free on Rivals to read.  From what I've read, Rivals has typically been down on Michigan recruiting so there are a few interesting thoughts from Mike.

"The recent addition of Dallas Crawford certainly helps, but it's a small defensive class so far. However, it's not a bad one at all. Brennen Beyer is a very good player and Delonte Hollowell has a lot of upside and athleticism despite being small for a cornerback. Greg Brown is also solid at defensive back and Kellen Jones has upside as a linebacker. Chris Rock has upside as well but I'm not as sold on him as the others in this class.

Michigan needs to add Anthony Zettel for sure. He could be the most important recruit left on the board, and Kris Frost would be a huge boost to the defensive class. I think the Wolverines lead for both. They also lead now for cornerback Blake Countess.

Michigan is involved with a bunch of other top defensive prospects such as Hasean Clinton-Dix, Doran Grant, Avery Walls, Timmy Jernigan, Deion Barnes, Branden Jackson, Mickey Johnson, Austin Traylor, Darian Cooper, Lamar Dawson and others. While they don't lead outright for any of them, I think they can pull a couple of them. A lot depends on how Michigan finishes the season but it appears that Rich Rodriguez is safe so I expect a good finish in recruiting."

Wins, or at least strong performances by the offense, will solidify in recruit's minds that there will be continuity. I am probably in the minority, but I don't think the defense struggling to find itself is any big deal in the recruiting right now.

Good overview from Rivals. Thanks.

I would so excited about this class if we can get the 3 they mentioned plus Grant, Walls, and Jernigan (would love HaHa but I don't think that's going to happen).

Crawford was a huge get. I love everything I've read about him and he may come attached w/ a certain 5 star wideout...We have an excellent shot at landing both Frost and Zettel. I f we can land Walls and a DT i'll be very satisfied. As for Brown, I'm not sure where this leaves him. Hollowell and Crawfrod plus the guys we added in the 2009 class who are already seeing the field should not bode well for Brown's chances of seeing the field at UM. If I was him I'd be looking elsewhere. And based on what I've read i don't think our coaching staff would mind too much...

The problem here is that we're still pretty limited with scholarships. We have about 9 more to give, 4 of which will go to offense (or so). That leaves D for 5, one might be for Kinard. Assuming he's not in the class, if we sign Zettel, some DT, Frost and Walls, we have one more to give with only 2 LBs in this class and guys like Countess, Lyons, and all the other probables still out there. Now, getting all of those guys would be great, but if we have more who would like to join, we might see guys like Brown and Rock looking elsewhere.

despite our recent struggles I think we're heading back to prominance.  Offense will be ven better next year (especially with Hart) and our defense can only get better with the addition of new recruits, experience, and the return of Woolfolk.

I expect good success next year and an even better recruiting class than this year.

Every great program has had a period of turmoil  (alabama is a great example).   I think ours will be short lived and we will be back in the national picture soon!
