home court in college basketball makes too much of a difference than it should.

You have to play exceptionally above and beyond the home team if the visitors want a chance to win. If you're equal or below the home team, good luck.

as you'd expect on the road, still only down 1 at half against a team that is projected to be a tournament team. We've got a shot to win in the 2nd half, I won't be upset if we don't win it though

The refs are bad!

/everypostever

Can we talk about the game on a little higher level in the second half?  This thread is reminding me why I gave up on game threads last year :(

Basketbullets:

  • Lol, UNC
  • Good minutes from McGary, hopefully he has a solid 8-12 minutes in him for the second half.
  • Need to hit a few threes, 4-15 not where we should be.
  • Solid rebounding, but it would be nice to force a few more TOs...
  • On the above point, perhaps the big lineup with LeVert running the point?

When the refs miss a foul. Of course every single poster is going to post it.

It doesn't mean anyone is overreacting, just means everyone had the same reaction.

If GRIII does a 360 dunk of an alley oop from halfcourt, I'm willing to bet you'll have the same number of repetitive posts regarding the same event.

Well, refs missing a foul is a pretty subjective thing and we aren't the most unbiased people.  A half-court 360 alley oop is objectively and unbiasedly an awesome thing deserving muppets.

I'm just saying we can bitch and moan about marginal calls or we can actually have intellectual discussion on game strategy, player development, and whatever.

I know, I naively live in a dream world.  But there was a time where we actually could talk basketball on that level on MGoBlog.

Game threads are tough to "discuss" anything.  People post and that's it.  Very few go back and re-read which is pretty much needed to have the discussions you speak of.  I understand your point but the referee bitching we do shouldn't be the reason to abandon these, it's the fact that all threads are for is to vent while the game is played.

Michigan is SO young, even with a national title game appearance last year.  Win or lose everyone is going to gain great experience from today.

I say play Walton and Irvin as much as possible today, no matter how much they struggle.  It's so encouraging to see everyone doing what they're doing at the moment.  And Levert might end up being better this year than THJ was at any point at Michigan.  Not anything against THJ but if Levert is just so smooth at scoring.

Michigan Basketball makes me happy.  So, so happy.

If home court gives you +7, it's about right

I'd say we should be up a 41-32 if we execute, make some of our open looks and the refs actual call a foul.

So down 1 isn't terrible, but the refs have to blow a whistle or don't. They call us for 2 cheap moving screens and then allow ISU to hack us under the basket on 3-4 seperate possessions.

1) McGary looks great, despite being out of shape....he is going to be great barring any serious setback

2) Spike is a pillar

3) Robinson needs to play like NBA scouts are watching...yikes...he doesn't even look like the best PF on our team, much less in this game.

4) Freshman be Freshman

Overall, we are down by 1 on the road against a great team. I am encouraged and feel we have a great chance to win this...let our depth even the playing field in the second half and lets take over in the second half to seal the win

Spike-LeVert-Stauskas-McGary-Horford/Morgan

I also like the suggestion of going zone for a little bit. Make them make some shots, if they do, no worries, go back to man.

The offense we run has no identity yet. We rely too much on passing it around and hoping someone can blow by their man than creating shots through offensive sets.

This is false.  Michigan's offense is a highly complex high-big motion set that has counters for every way a defense plays a screen/weak-side help/ball screen, etc.

It's amazingly complex and the more I learn about it and have tried to implement similar things with the teams I coach, the more I am impressed with how well Beilein's players react to defensive tendencies.

3's didn't fall and we had more TO's than normal.  If those two things didn't happen, we'd be in great shape on the road against a good team.  Instead, we're in a 1-point game against a good team on the road.

Completely concur.  The "passing around the perimeter w/ no offensive meaning" meme should just be killed dead.   And guess what...sometimes the defense actually plays good defense.   We had a few quick 3 attempts that I would like back, but a lot 3 misses were wide open, quality shots.

My main 2nd half adjustment is improving transition defense.   We let a few easy buckets in transition.

ISU is playing more aggresive and drawing more fouls. Happens everywhere, the more aggressive team gets the fouls called.

They also beat Michigan to the ball a couple times.

Great early test for this team.

With people bitching about the refs so bad I think I have already decided not to get on here the night they play Duke.

Yea avoid Duke night.

To me Bitching =/= Calling out what we see as unfair calls.  I don't think tonight has been terrible but there have been some shitty no-calls; I think we all understand that's what home court cooking does but it's never going to stop opposing fans from calling out the fairness advantage achieved.

He cost Michigan two points when he tried to do that highlight-reel dunk and got stripped on the fast break.  Hasn't shot well, post defense has been mediocre...need a lot more from him.

Hoping the Stauskas threes start to fall ANY MINUTE NOW

This is the type of game where Burke would take over in the second half. I wonder who is going to be that guy this year.
