Michigan rises into Rivals' top 25 recruiting classes
December 17th, 2010 at 4:25 PM ^
if we actually get Zettel, Bryant, Frost, and Lyons?
December 17th, 2010 at 4:28 PM ^
Is that with Dee still in class?
December 17th, 2010 at 4:31 PM ^
yes. he's listed as a "soft verbal".
December 17th, 2010 at 4:43 PM ^
You're a soft verbal!!!
No seriously, I don't know what that was for. Must be my end of the workday Tourette's.
December 17th, 2010 at 8:38 PM ^
is one of the best fictional characters of all time. There is an art to being random, and Towelie is an example of absolute random perfection. Never have I laughed so hard as when a towel walked up to a group of boys and asked them if they wanted to get high.
December 18th, 2010 at 12:15 AM ^
Towlie is a junkie and needs an intervention to save his life so he can see his son, washrag. The scene of him giving an old man a hummer in a boathouse for cash almost got me fired at work. My boss spit coffee all over the breakroom and called me a sick son-of-a-bitch... then watched the rest of the episode.
December 17th, 2010 at 4:30 PM ^
we have a small class, so by rivals' ranking i bet we'd be around 17.
December 17th, 2010 at 7:12 PM ^
over the internet.
December 17th, 2010 at 4:27 PM ^
and we will go up even more
December 17th, 2010 at 5:08 PM ^
When does Rivals usually do their final rankings?
December 17th, 2010 at 5:38 PM ^
That's what I thought at least.
December 17th, 2010 at 5:41 PM ^
No way. People stop looking at that class shortly after signing day. It's before that I'm sure.
December 17th, 2010 at 9:47 PM ^
It goes into real time on/around Signing Day, IIRC. As new commits announce the classes rankings go up and down. IIRC they just plug in the Rivals Rating into their formula. It keeps going after signing day as well, in case of late commits from big prospects like a Terrell Pryor.
December 17th, 2010 at 5:45 PM ^
They do final rankings after the Army All-American game.
December 17th, 2010 at 5:51 PM ^
until classes are "official"?
December 17th, 2010 at 6:07 PM ^
Here's why - if they did it once the classes were official, they would have to release the new rankings on NSD, because a week after NSD people have already checked out their team's class and have moved on. If you re-ranked the 2011 class in March of 2011, it's likely no one would notice. Also, the services aren't learning anything new about these kids between the All star games and NSD.
So, why wouldn't they release them on NSD? Because re-ranks cause hits. Everyone who cares about recruiting is already going to be all over Rivals and Scout on NSD, there's no need to generate hits that day. However, if you do a re-rank in mid January, you're get a ton of people going to your site on those days to see the new rankings/ratings.
December 17th, 2010 at 4:29 PM ^
I always pay more attention to where we stand by average star rating. If you re-sort by that (which is not influenced by number of commits) we are 13th on Rivals and 11th on Scout.
December 17th, 2010 at 4:31 PM ^
I get it that more recruits = more probability that you'll have recruits that "pan out" or become studs, but to me, it's quality over quantity any day (see Indiana).
December 17th, 2010 at 4:35 PM ^
it doesn't have to be one or the other. it is both. you need quality and depth.
December 17th, 2010 at 4:39 PM ^
I guess I was merely saying I would rather have 10 higher rated players than 20 lower or unranked players like IU's recruiting class is like (or was before they got poached). I also say this with a bit of an "eh" because we all know how 3* recruits can turn out to be more like 5 * players.
December 17th, 2010 at 5:03 PM ^
See: Mike Hart
December 17th, 2010 at 5:15 PM ^
Wait, are you saying Mike Hart was a 3 star?
December 17th, 2010 at 5:29 PM ^
You know.
Record breaking stats in NY + lacks size + lacks speed = 3*
I almost viewed him as a slower version of Dee Hart. ALMOST.
December 17th, 2010 at 5:30 PM ^
You're joking with this question right?
December 17th, 2010 at 7:03 PM ^
December 17th, 2010 at 5:22 PM ^
We only have a small amount of scholarships to give in this class.
December 17th, 2010 at 5:30 PM ^
So every time I see your name I think of an amazing white golfer and just wondering if you indeed play golf or if it has nothign to do with golf at all?
December 17th, 2010 at 8:12 PM ^
He likes to hook up with Perkins hostesses.
December 17th, 2010 at 8:17 PM ^
saving up for the freshman year, of course.
[lest anyone think this is a questionable remark, referring to Aravind Adiga's prize-winning novel The White Tiger.]
December 18th, 2010 at 5:23 AM ^
+1 if I could. This is on my list of books to buy when I return to the US, I can't find it in France. Yet another reason why MGoBlog is the best. This would never appear in the drivel of 'derp' comments on any other board.
December 18th, 2010 at 11:50 AM ^
and highly original (though that phrase isn't).
And yes, we're such an eclectic group!
December 17th, 2010 at 5:06 PM ^
I could agree more, actually. Every scholarship athlete is another chance for a raw prospect or a low to moderate upside prospect that is still better than our other options for that season. Star average only works if you expect that star average to hold while filling up (or almost filling up) the class. If you maintain a high star average until filling up on MAC prospects (or just striking out entirely) on signing day, you're not better off.
Our secondary this year could have used another upperclassman three star athlete, regardless of how much people may have complained when he committed.
December 17th, 2010 at 4:40 PM ^
Because 13th seems high for a class made up primarily of 3 star recruits.
December 17th, 2010 at 4:46 PM ^
[double post]
December 17th, 2010 at 4:45 PM ^
It is more simple than that... it is simply an average of their star rating. Our average is 3.31(on Rivals) or so... a three star is equivalent to all other 3 stars.
UM has 4 4-star guys and 9 3-star guys.
December 17th, 2010 at 4:58 PM ^
What you're trying to get at, but according to Rivals ratings, there are only 8 teams in the Top 25 recruiting classes that have more 4/5* recruits than 3* recruits:
- Texas - 17 4/5* recruits; 6 3* recruits
- Alabama - 14 4/5* recruits; 6 3* recruits
- Oklahoma - 9 4/5* recruits; 7 3* recruits
- USC - 8 4/5* recruits; 8 3* recruits
- Nebraska - 11 4* recruits; 6 3* recruits
- Florida/Cal/Georgia - 8 4* recruits; 7 3* recruits
So it's not as if Michigan is in the minority with the whole "more 3* recruits than 4/5* recruits" idea. A lot of highly rated recruiting classes have a majority of 3* kids in their class.
December 18th, 2010 at 5:16 PM ^
Alabama - 14 4/5* recruits; 6 3* recruits
Looks like there's 6 kids in jeopardy of not having a spot this fall.
December 17th, 2010 at 4:30 PM ^
Now I can finally get a good night's sleep.
December 17th, 2010 at 4:31 PM ^
We also have fewer commits than any other team in the top 25.
Should be a very exciting finish to this class.
December 17th, 2010 at 4:51 PM ^
Agree completely.
I also hope that all the kids we sign make it through admissions. It will feel so good to see players who do NOT drop out of the program because of academics--or, for that matter, any other reason. So far, this group looks like a good fit all around.
December 17th, 2010 at 4:34 PM ^
Rivals Rankings: I expect Dee Hart to get his 5th star at some point, especially since he may win POY. We are one 4-star player away from tying Auburn at #22. With the additions of Frost, Zettel, and the possibility of also adding Hakeem Flowers, Raymon Taylor, and Valdez Showers. I really like our chances at a top 12 class.
December 17th, 2010 at 4:58 PM ^
If he's in serious contention for the POtY award, why don't they just give him the damn 5th star already? Its like Denard being left off the 1st (and 2nd!) All-Big Ten Team but being the Offensive POtY and finishing 5th (6th?) in the Heisman voting. DAMN THE MAN!
December 17th, 2010 at 5:13 PM ^
There's one more adjustment to the star rankings. Hopefully dee goes up to a five and others move up to a four!
December 17th, 2010 at 6:48 PM ^
I think it's because he doesn't project well into the pros. Isn't that part of the rating systems?
December 18th, 2010 at 11:39 AM ^
you realize Dee Hart getting a 5th star wont make the team better next year right? Dee Hart is sweet- whether he's a 4 star or a 5 star he's going to be the exact same come fall next year... just sayin...
December 17th, 2010 at 4:45 PM ^
There are only 16 5 star prospects on rivals this year, compared to 26 last year. Do they usually change the list this close to signing day?
December 17th, 2010 at 4:35 PM ^
how good of a recruiter RR is.
December 17th, 2010 at 4:35 PM ^
Quantity is also important. All the recruits we have had over the past five years show how important the numbers game is, so I hope we are able to fill 20 spots.
December 17th, 2010 at 4:36 PM ^
I'll be more excited if we win on New Year's Day and end up in the top 25 rankings of football teams.
