Michigan OL David Dawson will join Iowa State as graduate transfer

Submitted by umbig11 on

The 6-foot-4, 325-pound lineman is from Cass Tech in Detroit. Dawson first played for Michigan during the 2014 season. In 2016, Dawson played in three games (Rutgers, Illinois and Maryland). He had a particularly eventful day against Rutgers, as Dawson played at both right tackle and defensive tackle.

but if he doesn't start for them then dam. They are the 2nd worst team the Big 12. But ISU seems to be getting better. They won a couple games vs. decent opponents if I am not mistaken. I wish he would have worked out here and had a chance to start but obviously he didn't because I don't think he would be transferring to Iowa State. If I am right they have a pretty good RB and QB returning and A WR. Might be a decent season for them and by that 500. ball.

Only one Iowa State coach in that time span has finished his ISU career over .500—Earle Bruce.

But as bad as ISU has been, over the last 20 seasons the Cyclones are 10-10 against Iowa.

Cyclones coach Matt Campbell has an interesting background. According to his wiki profile, he has turned down opportunities to coach on the NE Patriots and for Urban Meyer at OSU.

He also played for and coached under now-retired Mount Union coach Larry Kehres, who has these accomplishments under his belt:

• Kehres retired after the 2012 season with a record of 332–24–3
• His winning percentage of .929 is the highest in college football history.
• His 11 national titles, 23 conference titles, and 21 unbeaten regular seasons are the most of any coach in college football history.
• His 2000-2003 Mount Union teams won an NCAA-record 55 straight games.

I hope (and assume) that there is a plan.  Should be 6-8 OL in this and the next class, I would think.  Unfortunately, this area is the least subject to a quick fix.  Get more bodies in, teach them up, and hope for the best.  2017 is going to be made or broken on what we can do on the OL, I think.  Looks like a couple of freshman will need to get some PT, and perhaps one of the redshirt OT (Spanellis?) surprises.

He should have switched to DT, especially since he would have a better shot at the league with a year of seasoning under Mattison (with our need for a nose tackle) than a year of OL unless he absolutely kills it. but alas.

That's assuming we fill this class.

If 32 is still the number, that may be hard to come by.

I agree you use that scholarship elsewhere if you can fill the spot. But if we're going to swing and miss at 32, Dawson at DT for one year is a better option than giving a scholarship to a kid you think can play at Michigan - but not really contribute early in his career (sleeper/flyer type prospect).

I'd rather have a 5th year guy and then use that scholarship on a top prospect in 2018 that is projected to contribute quicker in his career or fills a greater need in 2018.

Good luck to him.  It is a mystery to me why Dawson could not see the field at Michigan.  So highly rated.  Supposedly played with an edge.  Seems like a Harbaugh / Drevno type of guy.

Good luck to David. I always thought he was going to be a solid performer at Michigan. Here's to hoping David breaks through at Iowa state. Congrats on the degree!!
