The Michigan Money Cannon is alive and well - and not sports related!

Submitted by 1VaBlue1 on

I tend to dislike seeing Detnews and Freep links here, because everyone can just go read stuff themselves from the 'local' papers.  But I thought that this might get overlooked because it's not sports related, so here it is...  Richard and Susan Rogel just upped an already pledged $40M gift by $110M to beneft cancer research.

The gift throws money at six topics - research; collaboration; cutting-edge scientists; scientific freedom; new (fledgling) researchers; and scholarship support.  The extra money adds to the already sizable support the Rogel's previously donated for the LSA school and medical scholarships (including need-based support for undergrads).

We knew Michigan was a leader in medical research, and this pushes that forward.  I'm not involved with medicine at all, but I think this is a pretty cool thing to do.  Michigan is more than just a basketball school!

"This is about the people who work there ... and dream there and take care of the patients there," Richard Rogel told the Free Press on Wednesday afternoon. "I've had the chance to get to know the researchers, to be in their labs. This will help them continue their work and to bring in new scientists. It's an amazing institution."

I could not have afforded to attend Michigan without a scholarship they endowed.  Met him a couple times as a student - really cool dude.

Rogel Scholar here as well, and it was the only way I could I have afforded U of M from out of state.  I chose to stick around and build my career and family in Detroit, and I know that would not have happened without them.

Rich and Susan are great people.

Be aimed at politicians who won't be bought off by Big Pharma so cures are actually RELEASED, instead of just another batch of pills to prolong agony and create a nation of drug addicted victims?

I do believe there is PLENTY of money now and in the past for "research"--just get the puppets who are on the take of Big Pharma out of office.

Unless, of course, people just like funneling money into the black hole of medical research and pill pushing.

Everyone knows medical research is nothing but poking a rabbit with the nearest needle then-- BAM!-- a cure is found. There is never a dead end, no real value to doing actual science to see if an idea actually combats a disease or is even safe for humans to take. There is not even any liability for getting one wrong, 'cause they just payoff politicians. And EVERYONE knows there is no chance of killing hundreds of people, creating a highly addictive drug,  or deforming a city's worth of children in the process.

/takes bong hit.

Yeah man, it's all just bunnies and needles. It's corrupt all the way up to the top. Wake up, Sheeple.

but smearing all medical research as "pill pushing" is spectacularly ignorant. Your implied assertion that there are "cures" just waiting to be released if it weren't for evil lobbyists is no different from the loons who've been claiming for 40 years that some genius inventor has created an automotive engine that runs on water but is being squelched by GM.

I never gave the word much thought. I heard a Gary Shandling quote that emphasizes the "ignore" in ignorance. It is not that the arguee is with out intellect, it is that they are willfully or otherwise ignoring what is plainly observable in front of them. Drug companies do great to terrible things. Let's shoot for 51 percent good and we are moving forward. I mean basketball is awesome. Go Blue!

I could spend 8 hours a day following Michigan sports on the internet. Now that I'm retired I don't have that kind of time anymore, thank you to those who bring news to our attention. Also, there are times when I only get to Mgoblog, so if it doesn't appear here I might miss it.

I appreciate seeing topics for discussion posted and think they should always have a link to supporting articles when available.

"I could spend 8 hours a day following Michigan sports on the internet. Now that I'm retired I don't have that kind of time anymore,"

That was basically me when I worked for the government. Hey, I did my job; they just didn't give me 9 hrs worth of work. But you're right. Once retirement hits, reading MI Sports on the Net has to take a backseat to a lot of things.
