Michigan is expected to name Kirk Campbell as its new offensive coordinator, sources tell @247sports

Campbell was Michigan’s QB coach in 2023 and helped JJ McCarthy emerge as a potential first-round pick. Was also interim OC for the team’s win over ECU.

Probably best case for continuity, plus QBs/players seem to like him. I hope they promote Hart to like “run game coordinator” if Hart is feeling passed over to keep him involved and appreciated. Time to find a DC, TE, S, LB, and ST coach!

Right.  Maybe keep the run game coordinator and give him an assistant head coach type of role.  He has aspirations to be a HC.  Hopefully Moore's success as a head coach is a cause for many years of bliss.  He gets the resume builder, he can take on some shit Moore can hand down so Moore can focus on acclimating/learning the job and maybe mentoring Newsome a bit.  The O line dominance is essential to how they have succeed.

Just wondering if Hart's health plays a factor in any of this. After a scare, maybe the extra stress of more responsibilities makes the job look different. No inside information, a colleague of mine had a heart attack and he had a whole different view of the work/family relationship afterwards.

During Campbell’s game as the interim OC, JJ McCarthy was 26 of 30 for 280 yards with three touchdown passes in three quarters of action. McCarthy’s completion percentage of 87 percent is a Michigan single-game record among QBs with 30 or pass attempts.

Guessing this means Mike Hart is probably gone?

Problem is he’s making half a million at Michigan. Which is significantly more than you’d make as OC at a place like Bowling Green and would be roughly on par with what you’d make as HC at a smaller school.

It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to take a pay cut for what is likely a dead end job.

Works for me- other than the goal line series where they were insisting on running Edwards up the middle to get him his touchdown, I thought the offense hummed along pretty well in that game. That said, that one blemish from that game kinda speaks to my main concern about the offense for this coming season- they need to figure out how to use Donovan Edwards more creatively and effectively. We've got a huge opportunity with him coming back, and he needs to be a featured part of the offense. I can't imagine that the staff doesn't understand that though, so I'm hopeful about it.

Totally agree.  And with so many starters gone, the opportunity has to be there.  This board has noted the lack of receiver depth returning, and I hope we see Donovan in the slot and/or split out VERY regularly.  Mullings and Hall will be fine as RB1 and RB2, and I'm not saying Donovan can't take ANY snaps at RB - but let's put him elsewhere to get more talent on the field.

That's what I'd love to see too- put him in as a slot reciever and see what happens. I'd kinda love to know if Denard Robinson has any ideas along those lines- I'll be honest, I don't know ball well enough to say if the two guys have particularly similar skill sets, but they do have similar speed at least, and I wonder if Robinson being able to take a larger role in things would be beneficial to Edwards.

Edwards sees himself as a running back and probably wasn’t too enthralled with the idea of moving positions, nor was it really a need.

I don’t think it does Edwards justice to call him a running back or a WR either. To be frank, I don’t think he’s good enough at RB or WR to be just one or the other. But I think he’s good enough at both that he’s borderline elite as an offensive weapon.

By that I mean I don’t think he’s a guy you can line up and run 20 times a game with. Sometimes the final stat line will look good, but the down to down success isn’t there. I know someone will bring up 2022 OSU as the counterpoint, but realize he had two huge runs and went 56 yards on his other 20 carries. You burn a lot of downs waiting for him to bust one.

I also don’t think he’s someone you just line up out wide. Matched up on a safety or corner and I think he’s a below average receiver. But if you move him all over the field you can create mismatches and get him on a linebacker. That requires using him in the run game and the pass game.

I'm curious if he retains QB responsibility as well, or if they hire some to replace him there. My guess is he'll keep the QBs since Moore was both OC and OL.
