Michigan-Belleville problems cost us 5 star Damon Payne

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on May 26th, 2020 at 12:09 PM

According to Sam on the Inside Michigan Recruiting podcast latest episode, the tension between the coaches from Michigan and Belleville “for sure” has had a negative effect on Damon Payne’s recruitment and is why he is leaving MI to play college football.

Payne is a 5 star #1 DT nationally, #1 player in MI. Consensus seems to be that he’s heading down South but OSU is listed as warm on his 247 profile.

Because our boosters arent as insanely football obsessed as those in the south. Rashan got extra benefits to come here. He didn't get as many benefits as he would have had he went to Clemson. There have been plenty of rumblings that Payne is looking for the highest bidder out of the SEC.

WD takes more shit on this blog

All well earned.  If you want to approach me about a discussion of his behavior you have a blind eye too, I'm happy to engage.  Otherwise, troll on pal, I could give two shits about your accusations.

most of it from you these days

That's revisionist bullshit on your part.  WD spite in these parts is not orchestrated by me.  I don't even make fun of his apartment or girlfriend like others have lately.

I really don't see him bitch back at people

You're delusional.  LOL!  Be a WD fanboy... I don't care.  Don't act or assume like I live to give WD shit either.  Actually, I wish he'd just go away because he's an embarrassment those of us who have put in the work and made sacrifices to get a degree.

Contrary to your worldview, WD's behavior here is atrocious.  But he gets a free pass from lemmings like you because of softball and gymnastics posts I suppose.  Otherwise, what you're selling stinks and wouldn't hold any independent test of scrutiny.

Serious question.  What is preventing you from doing your own research if you acknowledge "Maybe I don't read deep enough"?

Here's a recent snip.

For the record, TIMMMAAY didn't say a word to WD.  WD just jumped in on a comment that had nothing to do with him and decided to attack someone's character.

But it's not the first time.  During another diagreement, WD went after TIMMMAAY's kids (I don't even know if TIMMMAAY has any -- he doesn't put his whole life on display for the world like WD does).

Cube is right, not right leaning we know, but correct. Winning against OSU would cure some of the issues as far as attracting more Belleville kids and more kids in general.

We did just pull Seldon so it’s doable but it’s a frustrating hurdle to have.  It’s pretty clear however we need to pull high end kids from all over the country.

This is a valid question. Are the "issues" with Belleville because their coaches want to get greased? Hard to imagine there being personality issues with a major in-state school that is interested in giving scholarships to your players.

I mean no offense, but if you were the #1 DT recruit, what sells you on going to Michigan?

This team needs to start winning big games and making a name for itself again.

oh do tell please enlighten us Oh swami of football knowledge...I agree with his sentiment...top tier player, my coach isn't really supporting the program, so that's an easy lean...Michigan is not getting 'better' from a sense of national contention. Look at it however you choose, we are successful vs beatable teams, we have not shown prominence on the biggest stage, vs OSU, Alabama, etc...we haven't won a conference championship in a decade...high school kids do the craziest things sometimes, and a path to success, path to the NFL is where most kids are now. Michigan isn't the best path in the eyes of those outside Ann Arbor

So I guess playing time at a top educational institution in a great college town that has a national following and fills the largest football stadium in the country every Saturday while recruiting at a top ten rate with enough talent to compete with anyone and putting top ten numbers of players into the NFL yearly with an experienced coaching staff and has the best fucking fight song and helmets ever would be one reason.

Enough talent to compete with anyone? I'll give that to you..You are right. Its a leadership and or coaching issue cause we sure as shit ain't winning games vs. Top 10's with all of this talent that should be able to compete with anyone.

People don't care like they used to where a person got their degree. Not that it matters but OSU caught up with Michigan in academic prestige years ago. The news just never reached the Ann Arbor faithful. Ann Arbor is not a great college town IMO. I get a parking ticket almost every time I go over there. Ok, that might be partially my fault. Not to mention it smells like weed everywhere. The Big House I agree is an attraction. I can't speak to the uniforms or helmets because I am biased. I grew up hating them so it is hard to be objective. The mascot is admittedly cool though. I disagree that the coaching staff is an attraction. Outside of Ann Arbor, Harbaugh is viewed by most as kind of a weirdo, not a football genius. Michigan football, put simply is good not great. If you are a great prospect, why not go to a great school?

You certainly have a jaded view of academic prestige.  OSU is certainly a good academic school, although others try to put it down on this board, but in NO WAY has it caught up with UM.

Detroit-Buckeye is a horse chestnut paired with a hell-hole.

ANYBODY who watched the draft saw that Michigan is probably one of the best paths to the NFL.

The Glasgows and Danna getting drafted at all is far more impressive to me than Chase Young and Okudah (who were 5-stars out of high school) getting drafted where they did.

Imagine listening to your high school coach over someone who has the alert ears of NFL GMs.

HS coach has his own interests at heart. You think it hurts him in any way if his players go to Michigan.  It's not much different than College coaches and the NFL. These guys do what's best for themselves and their program, even if it means allowing their own grudges and cynicism play into it.  It's fame...I don't live in Michigan and don't know who the coach is, but he's being talked about now...outside the area, he's got coaches from all over calling him, and he's building up his contact list. If all of his top kids go to Michigan, then the big schools outside of the area don't call, which doesn't build up his own prestige.  He might be looking out for the kid, but most likely he's got a grudge or some other issue he's using to push kids away that will benefit him and his career in some way.

This.

To think that all HS coaches have their players' best interests as their own first priority is to be naive.

Most of them are just like anyone else.  They have their own agendas and interests.  They have people they like and people they don't like...and grudges that they hold on to because of real or perceived slights.

To me, it is completely irresponsible of a high school football coach to dissuade a player from attending a school like Michigan, which is objectively elite (yes, being top 10-15 in football is elite) by almost every academic, social, community and athletic metric available.
