Michigan Basketball Snowflakes Thread
Well that was stressful, gotta a lot of things to clean up but that was a ref clown show for sure.
I'll take the win, Go Blue!
January 26th, 2022 at 8:55 PM ^
10-7 now, let's keep winning please!
EDIT: The really important thing in this game is that unlike the Seton Hall and Minnesota games where we had double digit leads and blew it in the 2nd half, we played clutch down the stretch in this one and without our bigs too.
January 26th, 2022 at 8:55 PM ^
Maybe it's all part of the plan to make MSU overlook the game.
January 26th, 2022 at 8:55 PM ^
I didn’t watch. Just checked the PBP and saw that the last 17 seconds took up more of the page than the rest of the game. WTF!
January 26th, 2022 at 9:40 PM ^
It was the worst ref show of all time. I am not even sure M got the worst of it. It was the most poorly called game I have ever seen.
January 26th, 2022 at 8:56 PM ^
Great to see Caleb Houstan's potential. Let's hope his shooting stretch lasts a while longer.
January 26th, 2022 at 8:58 PM ^
Here's to him pulling a sophomore year Stauskas at the Breslin Center on Saturday
January 26th, 2022 at 9:40 PM ^
Was that the game he ran around the court after the game while blowing kisses to Spartan Nation?
January 26th, 2022 at 9:56 PM ^
It was indeed.
January 26th, 2022 at 8:57 PM ^
Ref shows blow. They completely ruined the game. 45+ fouls!!!!! WTF!
January 26th, 2022 at 9:06 PM ^
This is by far the most accurate and efficient summary of this game anywhere on the inter webs.
January 26th, 2022 at 9:12 PM ^
This is it for me. It's legitimately hard to play any brand of basketball under these conditions.
January 26th, 2022 at 9:18 PM ^
46 fouls, the exact same number of combined FGs…
January 27th, 2022 at 10:27 AM ^
More than one foul for every minute of the game, and most of them in the last 30 minutes. It was an abomination. You just hope you have only one of these a season.
January 26th, 2022 at 9:28 PM ^
This was a free-flowing, excellent to watch game for the first quarter of the game. It was 20-19 UM with five total fouls at the 10 min mark. Collins barking (pun intended) at the refs turned a beautifully entertaining game into a steaming pile of dog shit.
January 26th, 2022 at 9:31 PM ^
At least dog man came out on the bottom again
January 26th, 2022 at 8:57 PM ^
*whistle*
January 26th, 2022 at 8:57 PM ^
After all those ticky tack fouls on...well both teams- if Northwestern won off that insanely blatant push in the back on the rebound I would have been so upset.
January 26th, 2022 at 8:57 PM ^
Thank you Mr. Faulds. Now go work on your free throws. Everybody else go work on your missed free throw rebounding.
January 26th, 2022 at 9:01 PM ^
Well if they’re present when Faulds is practicing his FTs you can kill 2 birds with 1 stone.
January 26th, 2022 at 9:22 PM ^
Pun intended?
January 26th, 2022 at 9:37 PM ^
Once there was a contest for best pun, so I entered my best ten puns to see if one of them would win. No pun in ten did.
January 26th, 2022 at 8:57 PM ^
Shooting was actually great.
Fouls almost doomed us.
January 26th, 2022 at 9:45 PM ^
And turnovers. We looked good in the first half. That second half was sloppy.
January 26th, 2022 at 8:58 PM ^
I thought Dickinson yelling to the ref that the call on this fifth foul was "bullshit, bro" was pretty funny. That particular foul wasn't bullshit, but calling like 50 fouls in a game is total bullshit.
January 26th, 2022 at 9:01 PM ^
Disagree on Dickinson's last foul not being bullshit. It was. It was completely inconsistent eith other non-calls throughout the game.
January 26th, 2022 at 9:06 PM ^
I mean he got his leg out and hip checked the guy, it was a pretty clear foul. Just like his fourth was a clear foul and just a stupid decision. There were plenty of terrible calls but this team is playing like the young team they are and lack a lot of discipline and situation awareness.
Its also pretty annoying to see Dickinson complain after every single foul if we are being honest. Tough to take his complaints seriously if in his mind he's basically never committed a foul.
January 26th, 2022 at 9:18 PM ^
What are you even talking about his fifth foul had nothing to do with a hip check. They called the foul because of the reach and that is it, period. Furthermore, the referees did suck! They were next to Chris Collins the whole game. One time the ref went over to remind him personally about him having one timeout. Yeah like no kidding, he just called a timeout. That was a BULLSHIT game as far as referees and that’s the truth.
January 26th, 2022 at 9:39 PM ^
Later Collins took off his mask to cough for a minute. Then he put his mask back on.
January 26th, 2022 at 9:11 PM ^
There were non-calls in this game?
January 26th, 2022 at 9:14 PM ^
I mentioned above, but I can't believe they didn't call Nance's push on Williams on the last rebound- that was a textbook push in the back.
January 27th, 2022 at 4:46 PM ^
Nance also had a textbook hook-and-hold on Faulds to tip out the rebound on the missed FT with about 17 seconds left. They ended up not scoring on the rest of the possession (nance missed two FTs) but of all the games for refs to swallow their whistles at the end….
January 26th, 2022 at 9:00 PM ^
Man! If those officials were leaving most gyms they would be pelted with bricks. That was horrendous. Thanks for your restraint Crisler!
January 26th, 2022 at 9:02 PM ^
Refs sucked ass! Michigan had a good first few minutes of the second half and then a total collapse and then revived themselves toward the end for the win.
Juwan needs to learn to use some timeouts and some of his rotations are really odd.
Johns is definitely in the dog house and a win is a win!
January 26th, 2022 at 9:31 PM ^
Foul trouble forced the rotation, that said who would have thought a Faulds, Howard, Collins, Brooks, Williams (might have been Johns) lineup would ever be on the floor with 5 mins to go in the first half of a competitive game.
embarassing for Johns that Faulds has passed him, but that was very evident in the second half.

ON FAULDS PLAYING LATE INSTEAD OF BRANDON JOHNS
"We needed some length. They had two big guys in there. (Robbie) Beran, and also (Ryan) Young. And Young is a load in the low block. He’s very skilled, he’s long. I wanted to match size with size."
January 26th, 2022 at 9:02 PM ^
I am not hyperbolizing when I say I think that was the most painful game of basketball I've ever seen
January 26th, 2022 at 9:14 PM ^
This game and it’s officiating is an absolute perfect example of why the Bigten hasn’t won a title in over 20 years despite having the best conference several years.

Survive and Advance
January 26th, 2022 at 9:03 PM ^
Great game from Houstan again which is great, wonder what is going on with Johns that Faulds was in over him at the end.
Also can we acknowledge that Crisler is just the worst designed arena? Its too big for the Michigan basketball fanbase and the upper bowl is extremely far from the court. The student section is small and broken up, and the opposing team shoots their second half free throws into a tunnel. Just a horrendous design that basically guarantees that even if the fanbase was engaged and selling out the atmosphere would be mediocre.
January 26th, 2022 at 9:26 PM ^
Johns didn’t hustle back when he was fiddling with his shoes and Northwestern hit a wide open 3. He came out and never came back in.
January 26th, 2022 at 9:33 PM ^
Johns is terrible. End of story.
January 26th, 2022 at 9:45 PM ^
Great point about opposing teams shooting into a tunnel 2nd half. Never thought about that. Definitely missing out on hundreds, maybe even a thousand rowdy obnoxious fans to distract. Not that our fans are known to be any of that. But I do think it matters .

FYI, the visiting team makes this choice.
January 27th, 2022 at 9:37 AM ^
I wasn't aware that the visiting team makes the choice. I've never seen it any other way at Crisler. I'm assuming each team wants to have the hoop closer to their bench in 2nd half? Is that the determining factor?
January 27th, 2022 at 9:15 AM ^
Disagree with your assessment of Crisler. The view from the upper bowl is better than most. I have sat in the last rows of Breslin and I can assure you that the view from there is worse than similar seats at Crisler.
In terms of the other team shooting at the tunnel. Crisler was designed before the advent of the concept of the raucus student section but also conceived as a multipurpose venue and so they thought the tunnel directly from the floor to the parking lot would facilitate the logistics of concerts, circuses and whatever else they thought would go on in there. The remodel put the practice gyms and locker rooms at the south side of the court and so I guess it is felt the home team should be on that side of the court.
Certainly the seating could be reconfigured. Wrap the student section from the tunnel around to where it currently is and then continue to in back of the other net. Yes that would displace some current season ticket holders to the upper areas of the lower bowl, but so be it. Give them some perks like free concessions for 5 years.
When full, Crisler is a good environment. The problem is the basketball fan base is poor. I drive in every game from metro Detroit but god forbid if there is a little rain the locals won't turn out.
January 27th, 2022 at 10:03 AM ^
I can't say I've been to Breslin so I don't know how the upper bowl sits. I just know Crisler's seating bowl is not very steep at all relative to other seating arrangements.
And there was complete seating reconfiguration not that long ago and they decided to leave the student section as a broken up mess non-factor. I don't know if fixing the tunnel location is at all feasible but the point still stands that its placement is bad and is part of what prevents the student section from impacting the game in any way.
But to your last point yes the biggest problem is the Michigan has a mediocre basketball fanbase that doesn't show up for the team on a consistent basis. But even when full the atmosphere at Crisler is never better than good, you look around the big ten let alone around the country and places that are known as actually good atmospheres when full are Indiana, MSU, Illinois, Purdue, Wisconsin, and Maryland. Michigan is never on that list, despite the last decade of basketball being about as good as anyone in the country has had and having multiple top 10 matchups at home. I don't know if they just need something smaller, if they need to fix the student section or they need to kick out season ticket holders in the lower bowl who don't show up to games and barely cheer when they do, but its sad and its clear on tv how low energy the place is.
January 27th, 2022 at 10:41 AM ^
Please do not take this as political. It is simply a fact the the masks reduce the sound. Everyone is masked and you are not allowed to take it off. It literally chokes off the sound.
January 26th, 2022 at 9:04 PM ^
Devante Jones swishes 6 straight free throws and cashes a huge 3 when we are desperate. Faulds makes a huge stop and later makes a smart foul forcing Young to make free 2 throws (he misses one). Houstan makes a severely contested 3. Williams makes his first shot of the game - a clutch three. Ridiculous win with our two most talented players on the bench with bull crap foul outs. Shocking performance at the end of the game by our bench! Wow!!
January 26th, 2022 at 10:49 PM ^
The bright side is so welcome! These guys won at MSU and we survived. Let's go!
