Michigan Administration in Full Support of RR

Submitted by bklein09 on
I don't want to sound like one of those people who thinks they are cool because they have inside information. I just thought this might be interesting to some of you, so I'm sharing. Also, if it sounds overly cryptical, I apologize. I just don't want to get anyone in trouble. So on to the info. My friend is very good friends with someone high up in the Michigan Administration. This person does not work in the AD, but is someone who would definitely have a say on the firing of RR or the hiring of a new coach. Anyways, this person told my friend that they are 100% behind RR for several years to come. They are very understanding of what's been going on on the field because of all the youth, the new system, etc. Now to many of you this may sound like old news based on what MSC and BM have been saying in the media, but I noticed some MGoBloggers who discredited the media comments, calling them "administration speak" (similar to coach speak). The comments made be this individual seemed very genuine to me based on their context and who they were spoken to. But I guess you will all just have to take my word on it. I guess another reason why I made this post was to say something I had meant to bring up earlier in the week when the "Fire RR" crowd was taking over the board. For all of those out there that are still feeling that RR needs to go ASAP, I suggest that you really just try to relax and enjoy rooting for your team. Lower your expectations for a little while, and enjoy watching your team. As many of people have said over the past week, RR is not going anywhere anytime soon. By letting yourself get so worked up about it that you think RR needs to go right now is only going to make you miserable for the next two or more years. Whether you mean to or not, part of you will be rooting for Michigan to lose just so your point will be made to all of those who disagreed with you. The wins will taste a little less sweet and the losses a little less bitter. That is not what being a Michigan fan is all about. It reminds me of the Wisconsin game last year when two students behind me were mercilessly ripping the team, the coaches, etc. At halftime, I turned to them and told them to shut up. I said that if they were real Michigan fans they would stand behind the team no matter what and to limit comments like their to private conversations. They of course fired back, and it ended by me telling them that we were going to come back and I didn't want to hear them cheering when we did. Anyways, I digress. But the point is that those kids definitely did not enjoy that win like the rest of us did because they were in essence being proven wrong. Don't let that be you over the rest of RR's tenure at Michigan. After all, It's Great To Be A Michigan Wolverine!

Thanks for sharing the information. When information has to be cryptic, and you explain why, no one should fault you for that fact. I'm encouraged by your news.

who has openly said "fire rr" now? this idea that there is this mgocrowd working to fire rr only exists in these posts where people need to take a stand against some mysterious evildoer. most of the people critical of rr realize, for better or worse, he's here for at least another year.

I didn't mean to imply that the majority of the users on this blog were calling for RR's head. In general, this blog is a voice of reason in a world of (to put it nicely) misinformation. However, in the wake of this week's loss and without the ban on posting (like the one that occurred after Illinois) there were multiple people insinuating that now was the time to give up on RR. They may not have said "Fire RR Now!" but they made it very clear that they no longer believed he was the right fit and suggested that we should not either. I was not standing up to any evil doer, but rather just giving my perspective on the situation. Sorry if my post rubbed you the wrong way though.

thanks for the post. i cant believe the anti RR crowd is still out there after UofM's President and AD come out in public support of Rodriguez within the past couple weeks. RRod is a winner and he will get it done.

Great news, and much better than "I haz in4m8on about RR stayin! Trust me!" Good to see that the administration isn't as unstable as a large portion of the fan base.

Realistically RR has at least 4 more years as head coach here. 2011, IMO, will be his big improvement year (the year we will beat OSU!!!! Though it would be great to upset OSU this year). I could see an RR led team competing for a BCS championship game by 2013. I just hope what the freep started doesn't land us with a major violation. I doubt it will but if the NCAA slap us with a major violation than RR is probably toast.

Your last two paragraphs reminded me of Brian's post the day before last year's OSU game: http://mgoblog.com/content/two-items-and-then-breach. In particular, I keep coming back to this:
Schism and dissent plagues the program top to bottom, and you, as a fan, have a choice. You can loudly voice your anger at the program, you can disconnect and give up and regard Rich Rodriguez as an interloper and regard the players as weak or lazy or whatever. No one will remember this if and when the program turns around. You'll switch hats and no one will know. Except you. My advice: do the things now that will allow you to fully bask in the glow of victory later. Let's say Mike Rosenberg was actually a big Michigan fan. Now he's spent a full year publicly hating Rich Rodriguez, and anything positive Rodriguez does will be poisoned to him. He'll be rooting for him to fail a little bit so he can be right. Being right isn't that great. My brother and I spent a large portion of the 2005 Penn State game—the New Math game—making sarcastic comments to each other about the state of the team and the game. As it turns out, we were basically right about the team. But as we were jumping up and down at the end of the game someone who had clearly been annoyed by us earlier turned around and said something like "what can you say now, jerks?" He was 100% right, and I was shamed, and it took something away from that moment. That moment does not come along except once in a very long while, and what a shame to have done something to spoil it.
It's still good advice.

I agree it is not a good idea to write hate mail regarding the state of the team, but just becuase you do not feel the team is progressing, doesn't mean you have to stay quiet and just watch the games. We may still make a bowl this year, which would be great. However, the bigger concern is that we are not pulling in the recruits to turn the defense around. Based on returning players for the next year, we will be about as bad or worse defensively. It is great that the administration is supporting RR. I think we all should. However, it doesn;t mean we feel the program is headed in the right direction, based on the past two years

In regards to your comment that we will be "as bad or worse defensively" next season, I will simply point you to Brian's post on that matter: "Next year, Michigan must be better than they are this year. I have no idea where the emailer is getting the idea that Michigan can't be a better team when they return at least 16 starters on offense and defense, with Donovan Warren a potential 17th, some combination of Dorrestein and Omameh a potential 18th, and Darryl Stonum a functional 19th. Additionally, the players on this team are still extremely young. There are 11 starters on the team who are sophomores or freshman by eligibility, and many of the guys with redshirts in there are guys like Hemingway, Huyge, and Molk who missed large chunks of time with injury. The quarterbacks should take huge leaps forward in their second year. The only spot at which Michigan should be appreciably worse next year, excepting special teams, is Brandon Graham. That will be a major loss; it won't offset improved play at every position on the field. So, sure. If you really don't think Michigan is going to be better next year I can understand why you'd want to see Rodriguez fired. I also think you're completely nuts." I have to go with Brian on this one. Experience is a big deal in college football, and our team will have much more of it, even considering the losses.

Good stuff. Look, there's always going to be dissent about head coaches, particularly at a school with the national repuation and headline-grabbing allure of Michigan. Sorry, it comes with the territory. And I agree with those who say we who question this hire have as much a voice as anyone, and for the eleventy-billionth time, the results on the field and some of the media circus speak for themselves. Lastly, I EXPECT UM administration to back Rodriguez all the way to him hoisting the crystal football OR right up to the press conference announcing he has been asked to vacate his office. I am a fan--fanatic--prone to knee-jerk reactions, going over the edge, wondering, questioning, applauding, standing at games and yelling, sitting at games and knitting, tailgating, pinching hot young co-eds boobs during the human body crush to get into the stadium (although I admit it's hotter when girls pinch each others' boobs) and generally going crazy nutso because well, my life is kinda boring and these guys are living The Dream and it's all kind of that Roman Gladiators stuff. So consequently, I don't want coaches and administration who act like me. I don't want them to act like they run Michigan State. And I'm fine with all of that.
