Michael Onewnu still taking visits

Submitted by James Burrill Angell on

Looks like Michael Onewnu is still taking visits despite committing.

Definitely unsettling but maybe not so bad:

"I'll still be going on my visits," Onwenu said, adding that he'll be visiting some schools "down south" over the summer but not sure where he intends to visit yet.

As uneasy as that might make Wolverines fans feel, Onwenu made sure to add that he doesn't "have anyone in second right now," referring to Michigan being the only school he has intentions of attending after his upcoming senior year.

These days I don't think  'commited' carries the same weight that it used to. So, you basically have to assume that recruits are going to take visits and roll with it. At the end of the day, winning solves this...either they will decide to honour the commitment or someone else is going to jump at the opportunity to take their spot should they flip. OTOH, lose games that you are not supposed to and expect to lose recruits too.

LOL...welcome to recruiting in 2015 folks as this is the norm. Just sit back and let things play out. Every school goes through this every year and Michigan wont be an exception either.

Folks who get married (generally) plan to do so for much longer than 4 years.  This isn't as big of a commitment, so I'll allow the high schoolers (still too young to be thinking about getting married) the room to look around at other options.  No big story here...yet.

You're poking the wrong holes in the analogy. It has nothing to do with the length of the commitment. It had to do with the order of events. It doesn't matter if it's commiting to where you're eating lunch, it doesn't make sense to make a commitment before you're done looking at your choices.

Exactly.  The engagement metaphor doesn't work. While engagements (like recruiting commitments) aren't binding in any legal sense, reneging on them or "shopping around" impose high social costs due to commonly held social mores and expectations as well as moral/religious codes.  No such expectations or codes exist in recruiting, at least with regard to committments.

I'm don't count my chickens on any commits until the LOI is signed, sealed and delivered. Too much can happen between now an NSD next year.

I'd personally rather that no one sign the NLI on principle - the grant-in-aid being signed by NSD is more than sufficient, but point taken all the same.

As a general note to the conversation though, I suppose I don't understand what the apprehension would be about kids who are committed still taking and enjoying visits. This is a potentially life-altering decision they are making and commit or not, there's no reason not to do your due diligence.

And how the hell do you know he isn't fine with it?

It's clear that you're not OK with it.  That doesn't suddently mean Harbaugh isn't OK with it.   So please, inform me or show me some proof that Harbaugh isn't fine with it... cause your "promise" means literally nothing.

I feel that the word "committing" should not be used for a recruit until the LOI is signed.  Until then, recruits are merely "pledging" (or some other similar word) to a school.

I have no problem with it. I'm glad he's being upfront about it. Do some recruiting for michigan when you visit those Southern schools!

There are high school football players who will take official visits this year to see Ohio State play at the Big House, or to the Horseshoe in Columbus for the Michigan State game, or maybe go to see Oregon play at Autzen Stadium, or to visit Florida for a game in The Swamp, or to walk The Grove before an Ole Miss home game, or to stand in the shadow of Touchdown Jesus at Notre Dame, or to touch Howard’s Rock at Clemson, or to hear the roar of the Nittany Lion in Happy Valley at Penn State, or to stand on the sidelines during the game when Nick Saban and Les Miles trade taunts in Tuscaloosa in November . . . and some of them will have little or no true interest in enrolling at those schools, but they just want to be able to say that they’ve been there.

As disappointing as it might be to learn that a kid who’s supposedly committed to Michigan wants to take all-expenses-paid visits elsewhere, it’s hard to begrudge these kids the chance to travel.  I suspect that for many, if not most, of them, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

And as long as Division One college football remains a big business, these post-commitment recruiting trips for high school football players are going to keep happening.

Like others have said, there’s not much that we, as fans, can do to change those dynamics . . . except to hope that those highly rated players whom the Michigan coaches decide they want will be enrolling at Michigan in 2016.

I agree this will happen every year.

Fact remains, not every kid will do this, so fans will be happier about some than they are with others.  Not every kid is going to waver or take other visits, so although we can accept that that will happen, we don't have to be happy about it.  I think Onwenu should just decommit and take his visits and recommit once he's done.  I also think Harbaugh should assume that's the case until he hears otherwise.

All "commitment" is in the context of recruiting is a verbal agreement. It's literally just the kid saying publically "yeah I'm committed to school xx".  It signals the kids intention to accept the scholarship offer at that time, but it doesn't actually mean anything beyond reserving his spot in the class. Verbal agreements aren't binding in this case.

That was a nice stipulation with Hoke, but in the end who cares?

If he doesn't come then he doesn't come, best of luck.

If I was being courted at that age I'd take as many officials as I could just for the experience, whether I was settled 100% on my destination or not.

Just know that the door swings both ways, son.  You can visit with others, and Michigan can recruit others that play the same position(s) as you.

In other news, I'm going on a date this weekend.  I'm sure my fiance is cool with it.

All this argues for an early signing period of course.  That's a real commitment, and should be enforced on both sides unless coaches leave or other events that have been talked about around here many times intervene.

That said, a commitment, though not enforceable, does tend to result in an LOI being signed.  Sure there are exceptions but I bet the % of commitments who actually show up to a school is very high.
