Mich recruit Jaden Davis with 5 TD passes tonight

A good friend of mine is at the HS game tonight where Davis' team is playing another top HS team at the Carolina Panthers stadium and has been texting info to me. Davis looks great. The most recent of his 5 TD passes was to fellow Michigan recruit Channing Goodwin. He says that Davis hangs in the pocket well despite some questionable pass protection and has shown a ton of poise.

Yes!  You could FEEL his desire to gloat in an early tweet when he noted it was 0-0 after one quarter and Davis was just 3 for 7 for like 35 yards at the time.

Davis went 11-13 for over 200yds in Q2 and it looks like he ended up with over 400 for the game to go along with those 5 TDs....

I mean it got worse than that. Here are phrases he used throughout his reporting of tonight’s game:

  • Davis is 3-7 for 38 yards
  • has taken 3 sacks
  • heaves this one up
  • catches Northwestern sleeping
  • finds a man wide open
  • half of those were screens
  • limited as a runner

Davis lit it up tonight after the first quarter and Holland still found ways to take jabs at Davis. On big completions, he would still find ways to take credit alway from Davis

Serious question. If a insider reporter was bagging on Shane Morris would we have listened? Davis may be good but there may be legit reasons he doesnt think highly of him. Id rather have our incoming QB have some haters out there. It motivates kids more than almost anything else these days.

One of your main pet peeves is super talented kids making great plays in high school?  That is an incredibly weird and oddly specific "pet peeve" to have.  Is another pet peeve of yours when kids make great plays in college where they won't be able to in the NFL?

This throw actually looked pretty similar to one of JJ's first throws his freshman year at Michigan where he scrambled right and threw long across the field for a TD.  But you're saying this is a "pet peeve" lol.

He looks like he'll take a year or two to be a starter

Based entirely on this one play where he had to scramble for his life and found an open WR for a big gain...  Yea, dude, he looks pretty terrible.  That stat line of 450 yards with 5 TDs has gotta improve.

Holding the ball too long for sack fumbles and then throwing up an arm punt are bad habits that will need to be broken.  JJ took a year under Cade to become a starter.  Stop projecting and be less toxic.

If I was a fan of an NFL team that was going to draft a qb early, or if I was an NFL GM, then yes it would be.  Brock Purdy >>> Johnny Manziel

Occasionally scrambling when there's no one open and the pocket breaks down, and then finding an open WR for a big gain is not "a bad habit that needs to be broken."  It's a good skill that the best QBs at the highest level have.  His pocket broke down almost immediately in this play so he could either take a sack, throw it into coverage, or scramble and try to find someone.  He chose correctly.

You're comparing Jadyn Davis to Johnny Maziel because of one play where he scrambled, in a game where almost all of his throws were from the pocket and he threw for 450 yards and 5 touchdowns.  I'm sorry man, but you have a really dumb take here.

The best QBs in the game (Mahomes, Allen, Rodgers, Jackson, Hurts, Herbert, etc.) are the best because they can both throw from the pocket AND scramble when need be and make unorthodox throws.  That's literally one of JJ McCarthy's best qualities.

No, I'm explaining my pet peeve in general terms.  Stop projecting.

If someone told you they didn't like pink and then explained the EM spectrum to you, You'd say they're comparing Davis to radio waves.  I did not. Red has a longer wavelength than Blue.  That's just facts.

What Davis did in this clip is not good QB play, it's athletic, but it's bad habits.  He could also have thrown the ball away, or actually extended to play to find an open receiver the way Bryce Young does.  Living to fight another down is a good QB habit.  It's one thing if you've got JJ's or Mahomes scrambling talent and arm strength.  It's another if your scramble is still seeing you get hit by two guys inside the pocket.

Having only seen the 3 embedded clips in this thread, my money is on Davis needing to revamp his throwing motion.

One of the things that went relatively unmentioned in 2015 is that Jake Rudock’s throw changed pretty significantly over the course of the seasons. His “turned into an NFL prospect” ascension coincided with a noticeable change in his mechanics.

I’d have to watch more WolverineDevotee highlights to be sure, but I’m pretty sure Speight had a mechanics change. McNamara DEFINITELY did. Don’t remember about Patterson nor McCarthy, but I’d put a dollar on Harbaugh working on some slight adjustments to JJ’s mechanics over the course of 2022 and the offseason.

Disagree.  IMO, the ability to make throws isn't based on mechanics, but is based more on the players given athletic ability.  So improving mechanics can do several things around the edges - lower the risk of throwing injury; improve ball speed and accuracy; improve the speed a QB can get the ball out; improve the ability to sidestep a rush; improve the QB's confidence because all the above.  The downside, obviously, is that it could also destroy a QB's confidence if he doesn't get it right.

I think the key to changing mechanics is rote repetition to get the guy used to the muscle memory of the new motion.  And then getting through all the different drills and passes that exist before any game action.  If Jaden would be expected to start next year, as a true Freshman, I don't think Harbaugh would touch his mechanics right away.  But if he has a year to simmer, we might see it.

I'd be okay with it.  Our problem hasn't been with the actual throwing of the ball - (far) more often then not, its the play calls leading to various throws we complain about that don't really set them up.

Michigan's oline should be very good especially run blocking but I agree without JJ who I believe will return along with Harbaugh it's probably a rebuilding year.

It's very possible we land a one-n-done QB like a Texas leftover if JJ does leave. A lot can happen in a year so I'm just gonna enjoy this one.

If your throwing motion is long, the pass rush will get there more often.

If you hold the ball low, it’ll be swatted out more often.

If your release is low, you’ll have more passes batted down.

If you torque up and sorta lean out of the way as you throw the ball entirely with your shoulder, you are at a higher risk for injury.

Matthew Stafford has a sidearm release that he can make work. He’s been incredible at it. Most of his passes, though, are picture-perfect mechanics.

Nobody is going to be the Platonic Ideal of throwing motion. There’s always going to be variance. But there’s definitely a “we can improve this” for every QB. And nobody leaves high school as the best possible version of themselves…

It is "Jadyn"...and I believe he will be a good QB at the next level. I love his composure and escapability. A terrific young man of character and an even better leader.

How this gets turned into an EJ hate-fest is rather bizarre.
