MGoPoll (continued)

Submitted by MGoSoftball on

Tom from AA's post yesterday regarding the M Fanfare reminded me to re-post my original poll started in January.

The question:  How many people know the entire lyrics to "The Victors"? HINT: The first word is not "Hail", it is "Now".

If you already voted previously, please do not vote again.  Currently we are 20/33 (60%) who knew all the lyrics.  Here is a good video from some M students that is worth watching.

But I do always sing the middle part ("We cheer again!") that most people don't know, and that makes me feel a little better about myself.

To turn this into a learning/teaching moment, here are the full lyrics, lets do this poll one last time aftert the season and get the % way up.

Now for a cheer they are here, triumphant!
Here they come with banners flying,
In stalwart step they're nighing,
With shouts of vict'ry crying,
We hurrah, hurrah, we greet you now, Hail!
Far we their praises sing
For the glory and fame they've bro't us
Loud let the bells them ring
For here they come with banners flying
Far we their praises tell
For the glory and fame they've bro't us
Loud let the bells them ring
For here they come with banners flying
Here they come, Hurrah!

(chorus)

Hail! to the victors valiant
Hail! to the conqu'ring heroes
Hail! Hail! to Michigan
The leaders and best!
Hail! to the victors valiant
Hail! to the conqu'ring heroes
Hail! Hail! to Michigan,
The champions of the West!

(break strain)

We cheer them again
We cheer and cheer again
For Michigan, we cheer for Michigan
We cheer with might and main
We cheer, cheer, cheer
With might and main we cheer!

(chorus)

There were also, an alternate set of lyrics that were found in University athletic files circa the 1920s.[13] It is not known if Elbel or someone else wrote them-

Hail! to our Alma Mater!
Hail! to dear old Ann Arbor!
Hail! Hail to Michigan
The Athens of the West!

I do. I also know all of the words to "Varsity" (including the intro that the MMB doesn't play during pregame), but I still need to learn the second and third verses of "The Yellow and Blue" especially the third verse which makes way more sense to sing as a stand-alone than the first verse does.

Sing to the colors that float in the light;
Hurrah for the Yellow and Blue!
Yellow the stars as they ride through the night
And reel in a rollicking crew;
Yellow the field where ripens the grain
And yellow the moon on the harvest wain;
-Hail!
Hail to the colors that float in the light
Hurrah for the Yellow and Blue!

Blue are the billows that bow to the sun
When yellow-robed morning is due.
Blue are the curtains that evening has spun
The slumbers of Phoebus to woo;
Blue are the blossoms to memory dear
And blue is the sapphire and gleams like a tear;
-Hail!
Hail to the ribbons that nature has spun;
Hurrah for the Yellow and Blue!

Here's to the college whose colors we wear,
Here's to the hearts that are true!
Here's to the maid of the golden hair,
And eyes that are brimming with blue!
Garlands of bluebells and maize intertwine,
And hearts that are true and voices combine;
-Hail!
Hail to the college whose colors we wear;
Hurrah for the Yellow and Blue!

We have the "my first michigan book" for my 2 year old, which goes through all the tradition, the sports, the prominent ann arbor architecture, and then on one page has the complete victors lyrics. Full disclosure; we skip that page every time. In my defense, there are no pictures on that particular page, but I still feel guilty. Somebody neg me...

That's quite interesting, Bluebells and maize (appropriate username for this topic). I wonder if there's a common genesis that both of these were copied from or if it's completely coincidental. The fact that you've also seen it other places would seem to point to the latter.

I forget to mention that the typo's in the lyrics to the Yellow and Blue, not the Victors. They're listed on facing pages in that book.

No, I never knew all of the words to The Victors, Varsity, nor Yellow and Blue.

But I do know all of the words to Happy Birthday, so I do have that going for me.

Sadly, I can not recite all the lyrics to "The Victors" from memory. In my defense, however, I do know all three verses to "The Yellow and Blue" AND I sing them to my daughter every night when I put her to bed. She's been trained to put up a fist and say "HAIL" when she sees Michigan football since she learned to talk.
