MGoPoints minor gripe

Submitted by lunchboxthegoat on
So, maybe this is just me being obsessive... but I wish in your "my mgopoints" section you could see what posts were given +1 to and which were -1 instead of just a log of where your points came and went from and at what time. does anyone else feel that way?

I definitely agree, and gave you a point just to torture you at some later date. But yeah, I wish we could see, cause otherwise, I need to sift through all my points, and I'm starting to sound narcissistic. Point is, it would be a nice modification to make.

Cosign. It's not a huge deal, but I would like to know which of my posts are annoying people unintentionally so I can alter them accordingly.

I heartily agree, if points are supposed to help us learn from our e-mistakes then they would definitely be more effective if we knew which e-mistakes people were taking offense to. It might be helpful to have topics automatically lock themselves after a certain time limit from their original creation (or from their last post) in case people try and rectify/defend mistakes from weeks ago. That would also prevent people from downvoting someone that they happen to really hate to negative one billion points.

It's funny that you mention this, because I just did this earlier. I had went to bed thinking "Oh I only replied in two topics.. I won't go negative." And of course, I did.

I wish there was a registered time bypass. I have been a member forever I just post im a lurker, but when i need to ask a question or what to start a topic i get grouped with people who are newbies.

It's not that hard to get to the 20 point threshold, but I understand what you're saying, especially if points start being useful for other things. I've been reading for a long time too, but just joined recently to start actually posting. If you get grouped as a noob, at least it shows that you joined on the first possible day.

Man we need a penalty box and some votes on obnoxious posters. It would be great fun on the third Friday of every month to vote as a Blog on the re-entry of some poor schmuck. The dirty little secret is, guys like McFarlin are very entertaining in small doses. 80% of the posters on this blog would come running in off the streets to their computer, if a rumor of the return of McFarlin circulated. I can see the votes coming in in droves, "crucify him, crucify him, Ban the Mcfarlin" and a month later, McFarlin getting voted back in on a landslide because the Bloggers miss good old McF. Do we have any volunteers for the first penalty box session? I say we offer up BlueFront95 negative 591 points VS The Barking Sph... negative 86 points

You know, this sounds a lot like Jesus and Barabbas. The crowd should've chosen to let Barabbas be the one crucified since he was the one that was supposed to have been a less than perfect person. Instead they let him go. I won't go on for fear of being downvoted for discussing religion too much; I just thought the parallel was interesting (maybe you meant it to subtly refer to that and that's why you chose the phrase "crucify him").

That only the author of a post/ comment be able to see the current points assigned to it. This would avoid people piling on just because they see -4 or -10 or something like that without really thinking for themselves and deciding if they really want to ding post/comment.

Ok, thats a bad joke, but it illustrates my point. (no pun) The point system is supposed to be a way for the community to police abusive posters, and reward constructive contributors right? Well we've got a rash of people simply awarding and negging due to simple differences of opinion. I'd love to be able to respond to negative points with logical rebuttals, or clear up misunderstandings. I try to let people know when I give or take away points, it polite, and it's how I'd do it if we were face to face. We seem to be getting polarized around here +ing or -ing on whims. Neutral responses are OK people. As I said during a rant in another post, this isn't American Idol.

How bout a post counter as well as a point counter. That way we can use it like YPC. Some people may only post once a week, but get like a +10 each time; others post 50 times a day but might only have a dozen points. What is your PPC? (points per comment), are you a Football Sage? or do you have diarrhea mouth. I think I know which side I'm closer to, but I don't mind.

You can get your post count by looking your MgoPoints table, then sorting by operation with insert at the top, then finding the page number (10 lines per page, I hit page 64) where it switches from inserts to deletes/UpOrDowns. Without adjusting for 10 points per diary (I think I have 1) and 2 points for thread (uh, 4?) starting, I had 636 entries. Adjusting for Diary (adjustment -9 per) and thread starting (adjustment -1 per) I have 623 posts. Current mgpoints = 1364 1364 / 623 = 2.1894 PointsPerComment

I have no diaries, 1 topic starter, 153 comments. Yeah, I just added up comments, and divided points by them. 2.764 2.764! 2.764!!! WOOOOOOOOOO!!! WOOOOOOOOOO! EAT IT SHOCK! WOOOOOOOOOOOOO! YEAH BOY 2.764 TAKE THAT (gives imaginary spanking) 1300 points GOT NOTHING ON ME! WOOOOOOOOOO! Ok, I've still got a 7th grade grasp of football, and now this post screws up my calculations again. Brian please make it automatic, I don't want to count anymore.

I'll take the spanking, but note that I made about 350-450 posts BEFORE the up/down system was implemented. Since I'm assuming my past posts weren't +'ed or -'ed, using a conservative 350 estimate implies that I had about 1000 points for the under 275 posts after system implementation, giving me a 3.63 average. I'm pretty sure Brian can add post counts in a couple minutes if he feels like it. I'm not that familiar with Disqus, but I think I recall it being an option. I have no idea how long a republish and deploy of the website takes though.
