MGo Plagiarism (Not Brian)

Submitted by mbrummer on
This may see pretty minor to some people, but I now know what it must feel like for good writers like Brian to get their good stuff taken all the time. As you can see from my points, I rarely post here or other places. Yesterday, due to the Tigers brawl, I needed to vent and made a few posts at a Tigers Blog about the game. It is a much smaller site than this, but my favorite Tigers blog. Anyway, I came back to get the MGO reaction to the brawl and reading through the comments, and a poster here had taken my comment verbatim, bad punctuation and all, and posted it here as his own. To clarify it was an opinion and comment about the game and not a statement of fact. Anyway, I don't want to start an internet fight, because the guy seems to to have respect here with 600 points, but I thought it was really lame and left me feeling a little cheated. Just need to vent this.

I've seen this from other message boards as well. At first I thought it was the same poster on both sites but then when they use multiple posters comments verbatim you know that people are just cut and pasting others thoughts. EDIT: I have seen original thoughts from this board end up on other boards...didn't mean it was a one way street.

and I learned very quickly to skip their thoughts. The comments here and the diaries are consistently the best that I've seen. Most to all comments on important issues are thought out and relevant. This is the only message board that I follow consistently, I think it's because of the fine work Brian, Tom and others do.

"However, I used to think MGobloggers were the best of the internets, now not so much." is quite contradictory? Regardless, this community does seem to have higher standards. Some of this is due to Brian, but most to others posters who do not tolerate much stupidity or offensive behavior. And you yourself have helped in bringing this issue to light. Hopefully, this will deter any possible future instances. This can only help keep the standards of the blog up.

Single tear. Seriously dude. I'm not trying to be a dick, but I am one so here it goes. If you are going to get all upset about someone taking something you said off of an internet message board then it is best that you just make your own blog. It was a message board comment, not a damn novel. It's not like he used it in his thesis. This is a great blog, and usually has a decent comments section. If you have a problem with one poster, and that would ruin your idea of the entire board, then by all means be upset. But I'd suggest just wiping your snot on your shirt sleeve and sucking it up instead.

This is one down-side I've seen from the MGoBlog point system. Just because someone has 600 points does not mean that he is respected. It can merely mean he as posted 600 b.s. posts, mostly worthless and/or groundless, and received 1 point each. (There are many 500+ posters who I trust and enjoy their input... this seems to be more of a 20% bad apple situation). Same can be said for someone with a "mere" 50 points... may be 50 of the most on-point and topical posts of any member. Doesn't mean he doesn't/should't have more respect than a diarea-poster. I'd like to see a point system based on reader reaction. Maybe a point total for number of total posts with a +/- for reader reaction to the posts. Basically, somewith with a score of 600 (-100) compared to 50 (+30) would be forced to "improve" their input or be shunned or ignored for better and more knowledgeable posters = more respected

I think that jtmc33 wants to see not only the current total points for a given poster but also the number of points accrued through positive/negative points handed out by other users. For example, my current total would be 314. But, say I'm a bad poster and I've my net point from upvoting/downvoting is -50. Then my points would display as 314 (-50). Conversely, if I was a good poster, then my upvoting/downvoting net would be more like +60 so my points would display as 314 (+60). This would let people know not only how often people post but how much people like their posts in general. It's not a bad idea. jtmc33 feel free to correct me if I misunderstood your point.

MGoJustice is apparently swift. I looked up the name on the points leader board thing. If he did have over 600 points, he is down to 556 now. Not that I was part of the justice squad, just saying it happened. My question, do you have the links to your comments on that other blog so we can compare with the comments that he made here?

It was a comment, not Billfer's writing. When Porcello got ejected I was not happy. The comment that I did copy and pasted was what I was thinking. I'm still stunned that Leyland did not say anything. Look I am sorry if it bothered you but it was a comment. I would not copy and paste someones good writing like Brian or Billfer's. I will not copy or paste any comment to another message board agin.

that you're taking credit for it. That said, as someone who cites other reference on a daily basis, and even though only a message board, I think it totally sucks to take someone else's idea, much less a verbatim quote, and pawn it off as your own. I didn't read the comment, but, you know, it really doesn't take long to type something. Even if you didn't give credit to the author, you should have just said that someone's post on another board was right on. Thx. for owning up, nonetheless. I won't give you a +1 for thaat, but won't neg you either.

he was dumb enough to copy and paste something like "fukkk Youkilis. I h8 him. he is a punk, Porcello iz da man!" and you are upset that you weren't credited with the originality of said thought?

number #49 on the OT tigers aug 11 thread "I’m usually fair to the umps……But throwing out Porcello basically gave the Sox the game. Also, the home plate ump is calling 2 inches off the plate for their Starter. Lambert isn’t getting the generous zone. Dollars to Donuts, Leyland finds a way to get ejected tonight and fined tomorrow." It wasn't even my best work.
