For the chains I think…

For the chains I think Potbelly's is the best. All of the others seem to blend together for me.

If we are talking local chains, and I think we should, Jersey Giant in the greater Lansing area is the absolute business.

Alan Trieu calls Sprague a …

Alan Trieu calls Sprague a "Classic Midwestern offensive tackle prospect with a high ceiling and seemingly strong intangibles."

Is this Midwestern style? Or is Trieu calling Missouri the Midwest? Because it's not.

We can probably discount…

We can probably discount anyone who thinks that Mike Babcock would be a good choice to coach a college hockey program.

Misogynists can also be girl…

Misogynists can also be girl dads. Those two things are not mutually exclusive. Anyway, as I said above, to each their own. I think my usage of the term was accurate and reasonable. You do not. That's fine. C'est la vie.

The OP's post can…

The OP's post can essentially be boiled down to:

  • I find women's hockey to be boring
  • We already have enough women's sports and I can't understand why we need more
  • Using the amount of money required on women would be a waste

I mean, that's all pretty condescending and prejudiced towards women's sports, which would - at least in my opinion - be condescending or prejudiced towards women which is misogyny. Obviously we have different interpretations of the OP, and that's fine. But when someone says "women's athletics are boring, will never make money, and are thus a waste of money" that seems pretty misogynistic to me. To each their own, though. I respectfully disagree with your sentiment, but understand that people are going to have a problem with my interpretation as well.

2022 Women's Gold Medal Game…

2022 Women's Gold Medal Game is the second most watch hockey game in the US since 2019

It sounds more like the…

It sounds more like the grudge is against women, but I completely agree with your first two sentence.

I don't login very…

tl;dr

I don't login very often, but after seeing this blatantly misogynistic post I figured why the hell not. I am sorry that athletes that you deem less fun to watch potentially getting the chance to have a varsity sport at the University of Michigan offends you so greatly that you would have to put up this posting to announce to the blogosphere that you are a bigot.

I watch a lot of women's hockey and find it to be extremely thrilling. When you remove much of the checking from the game it frees up the skill players to actually use their skill in more dynamic and creative ways. That's not to say that removing the checking means that it is not a physical game. Watch any professional women's game (PHF stream on ESPN+, NHL Network, USA/NBC stream PWHPA games) and the level of skill on display is apparent and exceptional. The Boston Pride - last seasons PHF champions - have a roster chocked full of explosive forwards and are somehow already managing to put together a better team this year than last. If you would prefer every hockey game look like the 1996 Florida Panthers then by all means watch boring-ass early 90's, left-wing lock drudgery. The women's game is open, fast, and highly skilled.

It is an abomination - yes, an abomination - that a school with the rich hockey history of Michigan does not have a women's varsity team. Ohio State and Penn State have them and have almost no hockey history. Not to mention Minnesota and Wisconsin. Michigan's athletic department has more money than it can shake a stick at and you are worried that the sport might cost some of that revenue and not make it all back? Which of the women's teams that you listed above have a positive revenue stream? Hell, how many of our men's programs do? As much as people would like to pretend, outside of the main revenue drivers (football and men's basketball) college athletics is largely not a money making enterprise. Michigan fans and alumni are lucky that those two economic drivers for the department are so successful that we can afford to have as many varsity sports as we do. To say a program is not worth it because it will - theoretically - not make money both misses the point and is, again, boorishly misogynistic.

Maybe women's sports just aren't for you. If that's the case then that's fine. Maybe sit this one out. Considering you decided to post this topic not because you heard that the athletic department was talking about moving forward with a program, but because a talking head on a radio station repeatedly talks about it, makes me think that this comes from a deeper level of consideration than simply the dollars and cents of it all. Instead of being worried about someone else's money, when how it is spent legitimately does not impact your quality of life one iota, maybe you should be thrilled at the prospect of the university using its considerable resources to open doors for women to participate in any sport at a higher level. Huge recent strides have been made with regard to creating a sustainable women's pro league in North America that will pay many of its players a living wage. They do this in the face of an armada of disingenuous and toxic people such as yourself who come out to say that their sport is boring or won't make money when, if folks such as yourself would just get out of the way and shut up, would have a much better chance at making money and attracting sponsors, etc... In short: go away and take your bumbling and outdated beliefs with you.

This is going to be an…

This is going to be an unpopular take, but one of the major reasons Michigan was second in the director's cup is because Dave Brandon - for all his faults - pumped resources into the non-revenue sports like no other AD before him. The facilities UM has for many of those sports are amongst the best in the nation and it was this effort, not Warde being handed the keys to this castle, that is mostly why we are seeing the results we are now. Dave Brandon is an absolute turdburger, but he did do this one thing smartly and correctly.

Juwan should have been fired…

Juwan should have been fired for slapping another coach in the face. While I know he's a loyal soldier there is a point in the conversation where slapping another coach on a basketball court - or anywhere - should be an offense that requires firing. Aside from that, your whataboutism here is not a valid argument. We all know that the Michigan Man theatrics and bullshit are what created the culture that allowed Anderson and Mel to thrive and it took people speaking up in the face of certain abandonment and adversity to get either of those things looked into appropriately. It is time to flush this culture of acceptance of mediocrity out and build a new one that champions compassion, using one's moral compass, and transparency over making sure your best bud is taken care of.

A million dollars isn't going to get him very far in Seattle, but I agree, sounds like quite the life.

All of three seasons of the Monster series have been great. Just finished DC Sniper.

Actually, Ajax's folly came…

Actually, Ajax's folly came from continuously chasing a goal despite having the tie wrapped up. Their style is one of permanent attack and, instead of steering away from that, they were attacking until the end. If you watch the replay of the first Spurs goal, de Ligt is up near the box on a set piece and gets nutmegged by Danny Rose before a long pass leads to the goal. De Ligt also got caught playing up on Llorente 30 yards from goal, pinching up aggressively, which allowed Moura and Dele to run through gaps in the D, creating numerous chances, including the winner.

People deal with tragedy in…

People deal with tragedy in multitudinous ways, humor being one of the more common. Maybe slowing down and allowing for the complex nature of humanity before responding with reflexive anger would be a better strategy moving forward.

This is a Michigancentric…

This is a Michigancentric response that does not really take in the realities for each player. While I hate to speculate on Poole's relationship with the university/team/coaches, the major smoke is that he is not happy at Michigan. Why would he return if he were not happy? With his upside I am willing to bet that he has a very good combine and is drafted in the early 2nd round, maybe even late first if, say, the Warriors see him as a facsimile of Klay, who is going to test the market.

Iggy coming back to be "the man" on a title team would be him banking on two things that are largely out of his control, both being "the man" - he did that this year and his draft status isn't great and he'll be 21 by the draft next year - and winning a title, which is something that Michigan has done once in its 100+ years of basketball. Will he be drafted at all? Who knows. But if he isn't he can come back and try and be "the man" anyway. It behooves him to test the waters and see how it goes.

As noted at the top of the…

As noted at the top of the article, the ages listed are how old they will be in 2022.

Love that this gets posted…

Love that this gets posted after the Twellman thread got all "soccer? NIMBY herp derp" real quick. 2022 becomes much more important after both not making 2018 and also, as Brian stated, the stunning rate at which Americans have been heading to European academies of late. Great to see that trend start and continue over the last 3 - 5 years.

Brian - Will you be posting something about potential coaches? Or just wait for the USMNT to actually hire one? Wouldn't blame you either way.

By the time this rolls around this summer Arsenal might be relegated. I don't remember the last time they invited a League Championship club to the ICC.

Spurs

The most googled football club in the world: https://www.joe.ie/sport/googled-football-team-world-em-surprising-5761…

When Bobby Williams was fired

When Bobby Williams was fired by MSU Joel Ferguson told everybody who would listen that it was a racially motivated firing. It had nothing to do with his team falling apart, his star quarter back developing such a bad coke habit that he had to be suspended, 2 losing seasons in 3 years, a 6 - 15 B1G record, it was purely racially motivated.

He also is being investigated for racketeering alongside Virg Bernero: http://www.mlive.com/news/grand-rapids/index.ssf/2016/09/joel_ferguson_…

About MSU

One of the groomsmen in my wedding - I know, I know, cool story, reliable source, etc... - is a coach for MSU football. I can assure you that nobody on that staff or on that team is intimidated by Harbaugh or scared about a Michigan football resurgence. They are entirely confident that they will continue to beat Michigan regardlless of who the football coach is.

I went home for the Cincinatti game this year, and went out to the bars with this friend. First thing he said to me was, "we're going to beat your ass." Did they? No. But their confidence has never waned.

About Portland

The big Portland rumor is that Paul Allen - who owns the Moda Center - doesn't really care for hockey and has poo-pooed the idea of bringing in an NHL team. I'm not positive Portland could handle another professional sports team, but the Winterhawks do pretty well at bring in people, so maybe.

You could always fly to SFO,

You could always fly to SFO, rent a car and drive three hours up to the brewery, wait in line for 1 - 3 hours to be able to get in, and then possibly get to drink a beer before they close. I mean, if you're really interested.

Normally I'd agree with you,

Normally I'd agree with you, but signing players until they are 40 is a bad business model in any sport. Holland's main disease is that he overpays for loyalty contracts when every other team is able to get their loyalty contracts to sign at a lower cost.

I'm comfortable with the Nielsen contract, at least thus far, but you're right with the rest that you listed. I'd add DeKeyser and Ericsson to that list as well.

If Zetterberg retires

Even if Zetterberg retired his contract is an albatross on the payroll until 2021. Same scenario with Kronwall and Franzen. Holland locked this team into way too many terrible contracts that it will take them 4- 5 years to get out from under. Sadly, them retiring only frees up a little bit of cap space until their contracts are over.

Expletives Below

When Mike Hart's comments came out I asked a friend's father, who had been at Michigan in the 70's, what his thoughts were and he said, "Mike Hart needs to shut the fuck up. Jim Harbaugh beat Ohio State. What the fuck has Mike Hart done? Beat Michigan State? Fuck him. Jim Harbaugh IS Michigan."

Combine this with the fact that Mike Hart once stole my spicy chicken sandwich from Wendy's in the Union and I decided to follow the old man's lead.

Why are we mad about this?

This is amazing. I want to party with this woman. I love her throwing shade with "1968 Olympian, Mexico City."

These are the questions that

These are the questions that keep me up at night.

The Counselor

I thought The Counselor was a pretty great movie, buy casting Cameron Diaz in her role was a nightmarish choice. By the time she's doing her closing monologue I just want to rip my eyes out. So unconvincing and untalented as a serious actor.

La Liga > EPL

While I am a Spurs fan, and follow the EPL far more closely than I do La Liga, it is the superior league of the two. Sevilla won Europa against a Liverpool side that absolutely prioritized Europa over the EPL this year. Champions League final is all Spanish as well. While I wouldn't go so far as calling EPL a JV league, it is certainly behind La Liga in quality.

RAWRCATZ

Ohio RAWRCATZ are RAWRing

All hail King Solich.

2005 Game

I was at the 2005 game. Notre Dame opened up a big lead only for us to storm back. Students in the upper deck started chanting "Urban Meyer" at the ND fans in attendance because he had just spurned them to coach at Florida, ushering in the Charlie Weis era.

Miss you, big guy.

Try telling that to an Oregon

Try telling that to an Oregon fan. They think Autzen is loud even when nobody is in it.

Definitely different circumstances

Like I said, it wasn't a very big opponent. But there seemed to be a lethargy and snootiness about the fans there, like their reputation proceeded them, so they didn't have to try. Then again, I'm definitely biased. I've been living in PNW for six years and Oregon fans are only trumped by Ohio State fans for their perception of themselves. At least Ohio State has won something.

Autzen

I went to a game at Autzen a few years back and it was, sadly, very tame. Granted it was not a big time opponent, but the tales you hear of that stadium being louder than loud for any opponent are largely overblown. I'm guessing that if you went to a game against Stanford or Oregon State it would be loud, but the crowd and the atmosphere aren't nearly what they're hyped to be.

West Coast stadiums you should see are, in this order imho:

Rose Bowl

Husky Stadium

Cal Memorial

Stanford Stadium

If we are throwing any sport in any country on our bucket list I would say White Hart Lane in North London before they tear it down.

COYS!

Your assumption that "nobody

Your assumption that "nobody forced you to do it" is absurd. Everyone on this board knows that, especially now, you need a college degree to go anywhere in life. Most entry level positions will require some sort of college degree. Unless you are wealthy, the chances that you are going to be saddled with a large amount of debt are fairly high. Congratulations to you for having a father who was willing and able to put you through school. Unfortunately a vast portion of the population isn't so lucky. Stop being a smug prick and have some empathy. Not everyone who is buried up to their eyeballs in debt is looking for a hand out, or to have their debts erased. Most people are just wondering why the cost of tuition has risen exponentially over the past ten years, meanwhile, jobs and wages have not. This is, I think, one of the more important questions that this generation will face.

Bear Vs. Shark

+100 for the BvS. Awesome, awesome band.

Kinda sucks when you find out

Kinda sucks when you find out the guy who you are mocking is both a bigger fan AND more knowledgeable than you.

Just to echo prior sentiment

This is a really fantastic piece. Looking forward to many more installments.

I feel like Ninkasi is the

I feel like Ninkasi is the brewery you drink when you first get to Oregon, and you think it is amazing. Then you start trying the other breweries in the state and you realize that all of Ninkasi's beers - with perhaps Maiden the Shade being an outlier - taste roughly the same. I can't remember the last time I've had Total Domination.

Agree with you on the wine front, too.

Cascade

When were you at Cascade last? It has really regressed - from a service standpoint - in the last few years. Their beer is great, but they have really gone down hill lately.

Stroh's

I would drink Stroh's well before I'd drink the Widmer Hefe. It is a terrible beer.

Crux Half Hitch

PDXer here. The Crux Half Hitch is one of the most delicious beers I've ever had, probably in my top ten.

Oregon Fans

You obviously don't live in Oregon. Oregon fans are some of the most obnoxious in the country and this is the first time that they have shut up in the six years I have lived here. It is great. Thank you, Michigan State.

Deuce

Clint is still going through his terrible twos well into his 30s. He was a whiny bitch at Fulham, I hated when they signed him to Tottenham and of course if he was going to sign with an MLS club he would sign with Seattle, home to the worst, most hostile and abusive fans in all of MLS. He fits their fanbase well. I mean, USA#1 and all, but that doesn't change the fact that Clint is an impudent and petulant child.

Quiet You

I've got an idea: let's criticize the coach for doing what any coach would do in starting their ace in game one. I thought this was the stay calm thread. Maybe you missed the boat on this one.

Also, are you in PDX, or

Also, are you in PDX, or elsewhere in Oregon?
