META: Stability of Site

Submitted by NYC Fan on

Can we please address the issues with this site and set up crowd funding to handle the costs?

Please address this Brian as there have been numerous threads on this and you continue to remain silent.

WE WANT TO HELP!

When this happens I get my hopes up that some big commit just signed or something, then I find out that the site crashed....just because

Hey, let's be thankful. Yes, the site goes down a lot, but at least, when it's up, we are the unquestioned INTERNET #1 BEST at preventing bad thread titles.

I kid, I kid.

I'd bet nothing is going to happen until after basketball season, if then.

Anything except financial support but would be happy to do so. I have made a couple of purchases through this site but would prefer to help fund whatever upgrades are needed. I love (need) this site to be available 24/7

100% co-sign with this thread and others of its ilk.
We're all here to help and are willing to support the site to the best of our (probably limited, but still) abilities/capacities. Even if it's just some extra dollars.
We just need some idea of what needs fixing and the plan to fix it.

So as someone involved in website development and maintenance, tracking down random crashes is a pain and often the fixing the root cause of the issue can cause serious downtime/instability itself which would be undesirable during, oh I don't know say OSU week.

Not to mention that resources are likely currently being allocated to content rather than structure which is entirely understandable

For those who are looking for information about the different options the site could utilize and what those options entail, here's a pretty good article.  Many name drop "Cloud' because that's the hot button word, but when it comes to the actual business of it, there's more than just the cloud.

Depending on the route Brian wants to take, he could start a subscribership with special features to help fund.  The problem I find is that sites that do that tend to not be as cohesive or family like than free sites like we have now.  That being said, the design of the stie really could use an update and I think running on a different backend presentation would not only make things look less 1999 but also make the site run smoother.

Personally, I would rather deal with occasional slow-down and a few hours being down and it remain free.  But that's just me.  I would also still probably pay a small subscription if that's the direction they wanted to go.  Like the content too much to just give it all up.

I think the real reason here is Brian's recently hired new IT guy from India has read Brandon's books far too literally and is going on a warpath with this whole "if it ain't broke, break it" stuff.

Some of you people are such little bitches. I feel like I go on this site way too much, and I never notice it going down that often and, when it does, I attend to one of the million other things in my life. If you donated money, its because this site has awesome content, not so that Brian will hire a team of engineers to work around the clock making sure you dont miss a few hours of posting on the board. Also, its a donation - Brian owes you nothing. Be happy that he had the balls to quit his 9-5 and start a blog providing the best Michigan sports content in the universe. Get a life.

Someone should create a site; say, errorgoblog.com that serves as a panic room and a place for us idiots to go to commiserate when the site is down. I'm not saying me. Someone...

As said by others, I'm resigned to the reality. And it doesn't really matter. There are plenty of other things to do with our time, most of which is better spent.

Having said that, the issue isn't a couple hours on a Tues. morning. No one should care about that. The problem is that this isn't the first or second time. The server struggles with heavy traffic. And functionality is broken. But who cares? The content is good, and having lots of traffic is a good problem, not a bad one. If this was a tiny site with a fraction of the traffic, there wouldn't be any problems. I'd rather have problems because so many fans are interested in the solid content.

Of all the things going on in my life, MGoBlog being down for a couple of hours intermittently is way down on my list of concerns.  Doesn't bother me as much as it does some others.
