META QUESTION - Beveled Guilt

Submitted by saveferris on

During the portion of this week's podcast where Brian and Ace discussed their dissatisfaction with the general douchiness of the board these past few months, Ace made a passing comment about posters feeling entitled despite not clicking Beveled Guilt (paraphrasing here).

That comment caught me off guard because I haven't seen the Beveled Guilt button on the website for some time and have been under the assumption that MGoBlog has been paying for itself through advertising revenue and HTTV profits.  Is Beveled Guilt still a part of the business plan of MGoBlog or has it been made obsolete by the website growing into self-sustaining awesomeness and profitability?

Just asking because tis the season for remembering those who make our lives a little better by keeping this site up and running.

Of course, the lack of button could be just the fact I'm stuck using IE8 as my browser and it got bugged away.

I usually use adblock plus on my Chrome browser.. but I have it disabled for this site.

Taking ad revenue from this site by disabling little ads on the corner of pages is not nice.

between the f'd voting system & the recruiting foo fah I'm not feeling particularly "Bevel-y" right now.
I will anyway though because I always do & I know it's all hard work.

But if I get purged in the upcoming MGocrackdown I better get a refund!

As far as subscription models go, I'd say the most interesting & successful right now is The Dish by Andrew Sullivan.  All front page content free, but longer commentary etc. after the jump is membership only ($20yr).  It's a semi-politcal site but meaningless for this discussion.

EDIT:  Damn I wish I'd remembered the Amazon thing before last weekend.  Needs Moar mention!

I absolutely guarentee you that if there was a kick-starter campaign to pay for the programming to return voter moderation it would get completely funded within 24 hours of launch.

because of Michigan's $4 billion dollar fundraising push.

"The dnak438 MGoBoard" sounds nice to me.

Speaking of which, for only $10 million dollars you could have the "mGrowOld Institute of Archaeology" or "mGrowOld Center for the Study of Complex Systems" at the University of MIchigan! (LINK)

I was clueless about the type of support of going to Amazon through MGoBlog (sorry!!).

Does this apply to anything on Amazon, or just the Michigan stuff, or stuff that shows up when the Amazon link is clicked?

DOH!  I will change this behavior.  This is an easy one.

Anything on Amazon (and most likely has to be sold by Amazon).  The commission rate varies but it's around 4%, so if everyone remembers to do this (rather than, say, going through a slickdeals.net link), that's a hefty chunk of change.

In my last diary, I mentioned that I was too cheap to contribute to beveled guilt, so I kept posting diaries to generate clicks. Last year, I was getting about 2000 views per diary. This year, it's down to ~400. I'm hoping that something has changed about how views get counted, and you all haven't just gotten tired of my schtick. Anyway, I did the calculation awhile back to see how much revenue I might be adding to MGoBlog. Ad rates vary, but I went with a conservative estimate of $20 per 1000 impressions (CPM.) For 2000 views a week, and 12 games a season, that's $480. So I figured I've done my part to keep the blog solvent. Plus, I probably view 100's of pages every day and generate lots of ad revenue that way.

Someone earlier mentioned Sullivan's blog. I don't think that would work here because Sullivan has a national audience and a rather large subject area to cover. He puts up dozens of posts everyday. Of course, his stuff is mostly commentary about other news items. There is not as much original material over there as there is here. But this is a niche market compared to his. He's charging $20 a year. I think that's a nice starting point for a beveled guilt donation, or as it's holiday time, just tip Brian and the guys what you give your mail man / garbage man* / barber / doorman, etc.

*I give tips to the bottled water delivery guy and the newspaper guy, but only because they leave envelopes for me to do so. I've never tipped the garbage man because I never get to see them, but I've heard other people do.

I had diaries in the past that didn't have nearly as much traction as the one I posted earlier this year, and they had more "views" than the one I just posted, like, a lot more views. So I think something is different starting at some point this year.

And talked about the blog. I have donated before. But after talking to Seth. And finding out that this is his full time gig. Brian and Seth put a lot of work into the blog along with all the other guys. I love the blog, so when I got home from Chicago. I set it up on my pay pal, to give $5 a month. Easy, I do that for Adam carolla's pod cast too. If you love the product, give a little. Easy set up. And every month you see it in your statement.

I remember back in the day when I started a thread encouraging people to donate to the site.  It was not kindly received.  Why people no bash this thread too?
