Meta: Let's not keep asking TomVH for updates

Submitted by jaggs on

TomVH provides an incredible service to the MGOCommunity for free. He has insider info on recruits around the country and shares them with us usually at least on a twice-weekly basis. TomVH does not hold this information until someone asks for it. He puts it out there when he has the time, and usually within a coule days of that weeks games. Give the guy a break. We are all breathlessly waiting to find out if Dee had a good time at Auburn, but we don't need to keep asking for it. It will come. Two threads within the last 24 hours seems excessive.

Thank you TomVH for everything you provide to the site. We are huge fans that sometimes get impatient, but we do appreciate all you do.

The point is that he will post information as he gets it. The only time you wouldn't see it right away might be when he doesn't find the info to be pertinent, and considering the only time any one asks questions is when it is about a high-profile recruit. So, if they are asking about high profile recruits, it is probably going to be pretty pertinent information.

Lets clog up the board by creating a bunch of threads about not creating threads.  If Tom had an issue with all the questions, I'm pretty sure he'd be able to say that for himself, therefore you don't need to advocate for him.

Yeah, lets rag on new people who dont know when Tom does what he does and instead make 100 threads about how bad our defense was yesterday or panic about rotations....The attitude of some of you on here is incredible..All you do is chase good people away acting all high and mighty and try to embarrass new people by making stupid threads like this..Im sure ill get neg bombed because im not a monster poster here, yet have been following this blog forever...

I started one of the posts.  Can't help a guy for being obsessed with Michigan recruiting... But yeah, I can hold off on the constant requests for Tom.

But i don't want to stop talking about recruiting.  Never...

...or belittle, only to provide a helpful tip to everyone on this topic.  It's actually ok to ask Tom questions about recruits, it's just that starting a new MGoBoard thread is not the best way to go about it.

My recommendation: Check Tom's latest postings (click the Tom link on the MGoBoard header) or go to his collection of diaries and front pagers (go to his profile and select the "View recent blog entries" link), select an appropriate entry and ask your question there.  Also, Tom provides his email address in his signature line.  Tom's a busy guy and probably isn't trolling the MGoBoard for every mention of his name.  Ergo, the best way to contact him is directly via email or in a comment on one of the board threads, diaries or front pagers that he authored.

Happy MGoBlogging to all.

Again, new people are  not going to know how to do that or dont know how to go to his profile or search the board...They are new..Things like that happen...But here, the amount of people that go out of their way to rip new people becasue they dont know how to do that yet, sucks..It makes this board look like crap and discourages new people from coming here or posting..

...that's why I just took the time to explain how to do it, friend.

Also, we do have a tradition here of newbs watching and learning for awhile.  Think of MGoBlog as your brand new sports car.  You've never had a car with this much power under the hood.  Do you:

  1. Immediately drive it onto the highway and unleash all of the ponies
  2. Ease into the responsibility that comes with having such an awesome vehicle

Yes, I know the vast majority will choose 1.  But those who choose 2 will stay out of the ditch on the side of the road.

A big part of the problem is people aren't reading what they write before they post it. Things written, especially online, can either be collegial or insolent depending on the choice of words or word order.

Someone who is learning the ropes may get discouraged by a veteran member from sharing information because of the grousing and outright belittling by the veteran member about a post or thread starter.

There is always a way to convey things in a manner that is respectful of other people without being an arrogant jerk or on the flip side being syrupy or sucking up. Easy way to do this is reverse the roles and pretend you are the recipient and give your post a quick read before hitting save.

Rules are good. Veteran guys on here policing things so it runs smoothe are better than good.   The blog medium itself sucks in a lot of ways and lends to a lot of misunderstanding and hurt feelings.

I honestly see no problem with someone starting a bad thread that is repetitive or off topic or not interesting. There are usually tons of similar threads especially on game days post game.  I just check it and leave to find something else more to my liking.  Figuring it is not he end of the world.

But the veterans don't like it and have their reasons.  I respect that and try to follow it.

They have been cool to me when I have fucked something up. But that isn't always what I see in the treatment of other new guys.

Everyone could just stand to communicate it better to the newer people. No question.

Who made you pope of this dump?

BTW, same goes for the clown who asked for updates from TomVH on game visitors under disguise.
