Mel Tucker's Michigan Week press conference

A summary of his comments here. Video here. Sample quote:

Everybody is choosing sides. I believe in the best rivalries there’s a respect factor. Even though there’s an element of dislike and hatred, there’s still an underlying respect just because of the rivalry itself and what it means in sports in general...

You don’t want to add to the hype. There’s going to be enough hype just organically with the game itself. There’s no reason to add more to it than need be.

I'd summarize his comments as respectful and determined. None of the unnecessary Dantonio pettiness. While Tucker is overpaid, he seems like a reasonable fellow, all things considered. Nonetheless, it's time to capitalize the L in "MeL."

Let me translate:

I fully expect that we're going to get our asses handed to us on Saturday.  As a result, I'm going to try to avoid producing anything that might be construed as bulletin board material, or anything that might come back to bite me in the ass after a severe ass whippin' is administered by our big brother.     Trust me, if I thought we had a snowballs chance in hell.... I'd be talking about 'administering body blows'  wearing them down so we can throw a knock out punch late in the game, but since that is as likely as me serving the full term of my contract here in East Lansing, I will refrain from doing so.

I can't hate him. I just can't.

I mean, I want to score eleventy billion points on Saturday, but here's the thing about Mel Tucker: he shows up at MSU and the Dantonio Attitude just VANISHES.

I don't follow Sparty closely, but I haven't seen the blatant cheap shots. The intent to injure. The underhanded pettiness, the victim mentality. I haven't seen the head coach setting up 18-22 year olds for a fight before the game. I haven't seen him directly insult a college kid on an opposing team. I haven't heard of any shadiness, or picking up a player from jail, or helping to bury 7 DUIs.

And I can respect a dude who maneuvers his employer into a massive guaranteed contract for a ridiculous amount of time, no matter what results he produces. Charlie Weis is kinda a hero of mine for the same reason.

So I absolutely want to beat his team so badly that they drop down to FCS. But I don't hate Mel Tucker.

Obviously Tuck hasn't seen (ignores) the cheap shots that Sparty gives to Michigan players when they sense that they can't win the current game
