MBB Update: UM wins "secret scrimmage" over UDM

A wins a win right?! Brendan Quinn reported on Michigan's closed scrimmage against UDM and Michigan came out ahead 82-75.  Sounds like the starters were Z, Eli, NUNEZ!, Livers and Teske.  The most exciting this I see here is DeJulius with 7 3's.  Let's hope that's the turn we are looking for!

Update from Michigan's closed scrimmage vs. Detroit Mercy:

Michigan won at Crisler Center, 82-75

David DeJulius led U-M with 21 pts off the bench, making 7-8 3-ptrs. Jon Teske added 15 pts, 7 rebs, 5 assts. Isaiah Livers with 14 pts. Zavier Simpson with 7 pts, 7 rebs, 13 asts.

Update from Quinn

"Brandon Johns (sprained ankle) did not play for Michigan. I'm told he's on track to play in U-M's Nov. 5 opener against Appalachian State. If this had been a regular-season game, he would've suited up."

I would guess that's why Nunez was starting. For App St I would guess starters are Z-Eli-Livers-Johns-Teske.

That being said it's great to see DDJ play well. Him playing well is a major key for this offense performing at a high level this year, and a good sign for next year. Haven't seen any stats for Nunez yet but if he was the starter at 3 (sans Frans and Johns) I would assume that means he's ahead of Bajema and in line for rotation minutes at the 2/3. If he's a viable option that's another good sign for a team that needs shooting.

For those feeling a bit panicked about the result, preseason basketball is extremely difficult to gauge. MSU lost to Grand Valley in 2007, then proceeded to make a Sweet 16 appearance.

Even if we lost by 15 I would hope no one would be concerned. Above all else because it's a scrimmage. But beyond that:

We were down 2 potential starters (Johns and Wagner).

It's the first game this group has played together and the first "game" under Howard.

UDM probably had the best player on the court in Antoine Davis. He's the son of UDM head coach Mike Davis and averaged 26 points a game last year (38% from 3 on 11 attempts per game) as a true freshman.

If things shake out like this for game 1, I’m curious what rotations will look like when Wagner returns. I wouldn’t mind seeing us have a deep and playable bench. JB always used 7 or 8 guys until crunch time/B1G ball and then you really saw the depth dwindle. Would love to see what happens if we can have 8-10 true contributors

When have michigan fans ever made rash decisions based on early season college basketball?? Basketball is a long season. We will be playing without Wagner or Johns for the month of November. Be patient!

I’m excited to see what Howard can do. If he wins immediately the high end recruits are going to flood this program.

Yeah, he's already shown he can get a big recruit.  I've said it before, but if he's a half-way decent coach, he is going to be successful.  If he can pull in some top recruits, he doesn't have to be the second coming of Beilein--he just has to be above-average.

I was and I still am hoping that Nunez will have a breakout sophomore campaign and provide consistent outside shooting, but it's great to hear that DDJ went 7-8, even if it was a scrimmage. This team will need outside shooting so badly since they struggled so much last year. MMB only added 2 wings, and I don't recall their profiles suggesting either as a knockdown shooter. To add to all that, the line is moving out.

Closing my eyes and wishing for the best!
