MBB: Coaching candidates?
January 11th, 2017 at 10:43 PM ^
How about Steve Prohm, Iowa State?!
Made move there after Hoiberg went to the Bulls from Murray St.
Yes, this name isn't Gregg Marshall of Archie Miller but I don't see either of those two coming here; based on nothing, just my dumb opinion (not that there's going to be an opening anyway).
January 11th, 2017 at 11:42 PM ^
Having attended Murray State for a time and seeing first hand what Steve can do with the players he develops, I would love that hire. Wearing a block M on that campus and being asked how to get apparel in that font was always a fun conversation. Had a few classes with his now wife. Let's say the guy must have confidence...
January 11th, 2017 at 10:40 PM ^
Gregg Marshall.
January 12th, 2017 at 12:25 AM ^
We've got the money...I'd go for it for sure.
To be honest, I'd just start at the top and create and list until you get someone in your top group.
Go offer Brad Stevens a shit ton of money. No?
Jay Wright. No?
Tony Bennett? No?
...Gregg Marshall, Archie Miller, Chris Mack.
Just go down the list, but open up the checkbook like you did for Harbaugh.
January 11th, 2017 at 10:40 PM ^
Kevin Ollie
Greg Marshall
Fred Hoiberg
January 11th, 2017 at 10:42 PM ^
You and guy below realize he's coaching the NBA's Chicago Bulls right?!
January 11th, 2017 at 10:44 PM ^
I don't think Hoiberg will make it through the season in Chicago.

I know he's on a proverbial hot seat but, I guess I don't see him coming back down yet. Who knows, maybe I'm overthinking it and he needs a few more years in college ball.
January 11th, 2017 at 10:51 PM ^
We should go after Hoiberg. He is going to get fired from the bulls. Hoiberg would recruit at a duke and Kentucky level at Michigan. Not to mention, the style of play would take us back to the fab 5 days.
January 12th, 2017 at 12:38 PM ^
Monte Morris and georges niang aside hoiberg relied on transfers and jc. Also never saw the level of success in the ncaa tournament that beilein has, and has the same great offense bad defense mo. The hire would be very problematic and expensive all in the hope that it might get us to where we are now.
January 11th, 2017 at 10:42 PM ^
Kevin Ollie sucks.
Won with another man's talent and they've done nothing since.

Not Kevin Ollie
January 11th, 2017 at 10:44 PM ^
I'd be concerned with Hoiberg. Didn't he rely heavily on JUCOs at Iowa State. Can't do that here. And Ollie sucks. Rode Shabazz to a fluky title and has been shitty otherwise. The Gene Chizik of college basketball.
January 11th, 2017 at 10:48 PM ^
Gene Chizik of college basketball? Really? Dude got to the second round of the NCAAs last year and is only 44.
Harsh dude, harsh.
January 11th, 2017 at 10:52 PM ^
I mean, Gene Chizik went 8-4 a couple of different years at Auburn as well. And the trajectory Ollie is on is similar. UConn may lose 18-20 games this year.
January 11th, 2017 at 10:55 PM ^
Getting to the second round of the tournament at Uconn is pretty easy to do with their schedule. This year they've fallen off the map after a NIT two years ago.
January 11th, 2017 at 10:54 PM ^
Got a lot of grad transfers and risky dudes, but selling Michigan vs Iowa state. He would recruit at a duke and Kentucky level. It would be amazing.
January 11th, 2017 at 10:51 PM ^
Not that I want Kevin Ollie, but why would he willingly leave his alma mater, which Hhas been a traditional power in basketball, at a school where basketball is the primary sport to come to Michigan? Other than getting out of Geno's large shadow.
January 11th, 2017 at 11:24 PM ^
I've now lost faith in Beilein too. But it's still amusing how many people think Michigan bball is a blue blood program
January 11th, 2017 at 11:36 PM ^
Are we UNC, Duke, UCLA level? no. We are a top 10-15 type program though. It's still amusing how many people think Michigan bball is like Iowa or Nebraska.
January 11th, 2017 at 11:44 PM ^
And think the program was built solely on cheating (in reality, Webber was the only Fab Fiver and the other players in the scandal weren't that great). The Fab Five didn't go to Michigan because they got money.
January 12th, 2017 at 12:50 AM ^
You must be 20 years old. Your comment can be easily refuted with you just searching Michigan basketball once on any search engine, Einsteinium.

There's lots of evidence that each of the Fab Five were going to choose Michigan had Ed Martin never been alive.
That does not excuse the bad behavior, but I don't think it moved the needle much with the Fab Five. Later recruits, though, I am no as sure about.
January 12th, 2017 at 12:52 AM ^
My bad I thought you said our program was built on cheating. I think it's time to step away from the microphone. Go Blue!

I don't know about the Cazzie Russell era but the Freider era was quite dirty. If you think Weber was the first dirty player, you are kidding yourself.
January 12th, 2017 at 12:48 PM ^
seriously, anything?
January 12th, 2017 at 1:01 PM ^
Yes. Rumeal Robinson admitted it on the record. Rumeal Robinson was the gold standard of scumbag.
January 12th, 2017 at 1:29 AM ^
and they will tell you that both Frieda and Fischer were dirty.
January 12th, 2017 at 10:34 AM ^
Jalen Rose has admitted many times to taking money from Ed Martin. Webber was a bigger deal because he lied to a grand jury about it. Jalen told the truth. I was in elementary school in those years but from what I have heard from people who followed the program, the Fab five were certainly not the first Michigan players to get something extra during that era of Michigan Basketball being elite.
January 12th, 2017 at 11:46 AM ^
Players at Iowa, Minnesota and I think Illinois all got money from Martin, yet we were the only one punished because Martin was considered a Michigan booster. He did not direct players where to go but provided money to many Michigan kids.
January 12th, 2017 at 8:52 AM ^
"We are a top 10-15 type program though"
In our dreams.
This was true under Bill Frieder and Steve Fisher, but hasn't been since, really.
January 12th, 2017 at 10:07 AM ^
Realistically, there has been 15 different teams to win a Bball championship since the last time Michigan did. Three of those teams are UNLV, Arkansas, and Florida, which are more flash-in-the-pan than traditional powers. Michigan has also made three appearances in the finals since their last championship. It is still a brand name, and a much easier sell than you think for a coach who is willing to go after elite talent.
January 11th, 2017 at 10:40 PM ^
Gregg Marshall, Archie Miller, Fred Hoiberg... Lavall Jordan?
January 11th, 2017 at 10:42 PM ^
Feels like he's lost the team maybe.
Archie Miller would be my choice.
January 11th, 2017 at 10:42 PM ^
Coach Cal. Him and Harbs are buds
January 11th, 2017 at 10:44 PM ^
He's at a top basketball job that doesn't care if he cheats. Not gonna happen.

Why would anyone care if Michigan "cheats"? Victimless crimes that are no longer punished.
January 11th, 2017 at 10:48 PM ^
Sarcasm much? Rough night for you.
January 11th, 2017 at 10:49 PM ^
Thing is I don't believe he even has to cheat anymore, kids will keep lining up no need for bagmen

No need to cheat when a Midnight Madness practice has scouts galore...
January 11th, 2017 at 11:05 PM ^
Sarcasm buddy it would never happen
January 11th, 2017 at 11:07 PM ^
Given how some think people in the NBA with zero to do with Michigan would come here, I took that one seriously.

Just have to hire a compliance officer to follow him around too.
January 11th, 2017 at 10:49 PM ^
Fuck that shit. Michigan fans have made utter fools of themselves through the years for thinking NCAA compliance was so noble and virtuous.
January 11th, 2017 at 11:46 PM ^
while I silently agree with many things you post, I'll audibly (with character input sounds) agree whole-heartedly with this
January 11th, 2017 at 10:43 PM ^
I probably would have negged this thread two weeks ago. But I was wrong. 2011-14 was the exception. This is embarassing. We are getting our shit pushed by a wellbelow average B1G team. I'm ready to move on.
January 11th, 2017 at 10:42 PM ^
Time to get somebody who can actually recruit. The fab 5 scandal was 20 years ago. Sean Miller
January 11th, 2017 at 10:43 PM ^
Doubt Warde will pull the trigger this year.
January 11th, 2017 at 10:43 PM ^
After beilein lost all his assistants that were clearly the backbone of this coaching staff the program fell off. What a mess
