Martin quote about holding
"There was one play where the ref gave 59 (left guard Chris Stewart) a warning. He held the heck out of me and I looked at the ref and he just went over to 59 and was like, 'Hey, watch it.' And I'm like, 'This isn't like a speeding ticket, where you get a warning!' But that's something you just can't control."

Heh. This seems funny after a win. If we had lost I would be pissed beyond belief.
September 12th, 2010 at 1:18 AM ^
this board would be in lockdown if we lost and heard about this.
I would invest in home depot cuz there would surely be an insane amount of holes in the walls that needed to be re-dry-walled

It definitely felt (to my admittedly biased eyes) like the refs were keeping a closer eye on our OL than ND's.
September 12th, 2010 at 1:16 AM ^
I was at the game and I remember so many various plays just shouting for the hold on the edge because it was so blatantly obvious and it wasn't getting called. It was like watching Brandon Graham vs. everybody last year, all hold no call.
September 12th, 2010 at 8:37 AM ^
eyes closed. Thanks phantom touchdown! Final score 17-28?
September 12th, 2010 at 12:31 AM ^
They seemed to miss a ton of holdings. Oh well. It's not like you can review a hold.
September 12th, 2010 at 12:35 AM ^
So it's not really a huge surprise.
September 12th, 2010 at 12:31 AM ^
The holding on Mouton on one of Allen's runs was re-diddly-donkulous. Mouton was not happy about it.
September 12th, 2010 at 12:35 AM ^
Actually, I saw him complaining on that one (in the 2nd half on a sweep to their left if I'm not mistaken) and I really didn't think he was held.
I did catch Roh and Martin getting held on a couple of occasions, but I also saw our offensive linemen get away with a couple of holds so I thought it just evened out.
September 12th, 2010 at 12:57 AM ^
Mouton was certainly held on the play in question. His jersey was grasped and tugged away from his body, and then he turned towards the play and it the gusy hands were still outside his pads and grabbing. Holding happens on every play, but when it's so blatant and at the point of attack it has to be called.
September 12th, 2010 at 1:01 AM ^
That Mouton hold happened on the series right after the drive killing Omameh hold. I was already pissed about the Omameh hold because it happened after Denard had clearly passed the block, and didn't affect the play. So on the very next series to watch Mouton unable to reach back to tackle Allen on a sweep play because the Left Tackle had him tied up just boiled my blood. Holding happens all the time, but only Michigan seemed to be getting dinged on it so much. Martin's quote justifies my feelings about the refs.
September 12th, 2010 at 12:34 AM ^
is one of those things where I feel like usually you can't complain about it all that much because it's probably missed being called against your own team as often as it is in favor.
But considering all the holding calls we were getting nailed with, there were some egregious ones that went uncalled (one horribly obvious one on Mouton where the RB came around the edge with Mouton on contain and the ND "blocker" practically ripping his shoulder pad off as Jonas was trying to run away from him).
Although I really think that one on Michael Floyd was pretty soft, so maybe they were owed one.
Overall, it wasn't a poorly officiated game by any means.
September 12th, 2010 at 12:40 AM ^
I agree that holding can be easily "missed"... but this ref wasn't missing them. He was seeing them, acknowledging them, and deliberately not throwing a flag.
What is that? I don't know what to call it without sounding like a conspiracy theorist (but I'll still look like one in my tin foil hat).
September 12th, 2010 at 12:59 AM ^
when I say "missed." Whether they're actually missing them or just choosing not to call them, I still believe it happens both ways. So without closely examining the tape, it's possible we were doing the exact same things and the refs would say to us "be careful."
Holding basically is a judgment call at this point in football. I really don't think it's an exaggeration to say that by the rulebook, holding happens on every play. So the ref is left to decide "was that hold so egregious that I should call it?" (except for the Spartan Bob game, in which case anal penetration was permissable MSU OL behavior). Maybe there was more leeway given to ND in this particular game, but a ref giving an OL a heads up is not out of the ordinary.
September 12th, 2010 at 1:58 AM ^
Look at the penalty count. If it happens to everyone, and it was called evenly, that count is absurd. Penalties were not called evenly in this game, its part of being in South Bend.

September 12th, 2010 at 12:41 AM ^
let's say they had reviewed it...what would be the result?
I doubt that either a Michigan or an ND player picked up the football in the endzone, probably just the ref. It's not like it rolled out the back of the endzone, so no possession changed. I would imagine they'd place it at the spot of the fumble and call it first and goal at the half yard line.
September 12th, 2010 at 12:57 AM ^
at that point, the whistle had already been blown, so the ball couldnt change possession. as you said, they would spot the ball at the location of the fumble (inside the half yard line)
September 12th, 2010 at 8:39 AM ^
It would have been a touchback.
September 12th, 2010 at 12:37 AM ^
I'm really glad someone brought this up. There were numerous spots in the game where I felt we got absolutely HOSED on a no call for a ND holding call. Wasn't thrilled with the refs today...
September 12th, 2010 at 1:10 AM ^
I agree that they were not consistent, but there was no ND conspiracy.
September 12th, 2010 at 1:21 AM ^
Nope... they were Big East refs. (At least from what I recall the announcers saying)
September 12th, 2010 at 1:58 AM ^
According to Frank Beckman and Jim Brandstatter's pregame report, today's officiating staff was made up of Big Ten on-field officials and Big East replay officials.
September 12th, 2010 at 2:55 AM ^
I don't think it really matters what conference they were from. I don't think they were in the tank for ND or anything, just that they're human and can be influenced by the crowd.
September 12th, 2010 at 1:23 AM ^
We also got the benefit of some bad spots. There was one spot I recall where we were given, definiteively, an easy first down (a run by Smith) where he was, at best, AT the marker. They gave him at least a half yard, maybe even a full yard. The refs were, in my opinion, even.
September 12th, 2010 at 12:39 AM ^
i don't know ncaa rules or if this is even considered complaining or evaluating or whatever you want to call it, but i hope he doesn't get in trouble for the comment. i doubt he will or even if he could, but i know some league have policy on it.
September 12th, 2010 at 12:43 AM ^
There was holding all over the place, and now no question that ND got the home ref advantage.
September 12th, 2010 at 12:46 AM ^
Is that why he only had 1 tackle?

September 12th, 2010 at 12:47 AM ^
ND got away with a boatload of holds last year, too. Seems to be characterisitic of their O-line for some reason.
September 12th, 2010 at 1:06 AM ^
Some of the holds on their first couple of drives were absurd, I thought we were dealt some pretty poor cards from the refs in this one.
I don't even want to mention their fantom touchdown.
September 12th, 2010 at 1:08 AM ^
is not to make tackles. can't measure how good of a game a nose tackle had by how many tackles he made.
September 12th, 2010 at 1:15 AM ^
"ehhhh if the 12th man is pretty close to being off the field the refs said theyd let it slide. Especially since they are playing against the no huddle."
Um, wat

Not the first time ND has gotten away with a few

September 12th, 2010 at 1:28 AM ^
THere were so many blown calls today. ND was holding on almost every play, i'm glad Martin stepped up and said something. I'm surprised we didn't see a pass interference on the last play of the game even though the ball was in the stands.
September 12th, 2010 at 1:31 AM ^
the ball will be placed in ND's endzone. Touchdown."
September 12th, 2010 at 2:07 AM ^
It always chaps my ass when Michigan gets called for holding when playing ND. ND's o-line holds on practically every play, and often in a ridiculously blatant fashion (see, e.g,. any time they run around the end).
Interestingly, today also marks the second time in recent memory that ND was credited with a TD despite the ballcarrier being separated from the ball at the 2 yard line.
