My parents said nothing to me about my college decision (which was not Michigan initially) and "let" me follow my boyfriend to college. I wish they had tried to talk some sense into me. Also, try being a mother for a day. On occasions like this, when you think your kid is making a bad decision for himself, it really sucks. You want them to be independent and learn from their decisions, but you have the benefit/curse of hindsight. It's hard to let go and just say, "Go for it," if your gut is telling you it will be a bad decision.

I know you won't believe this but the song, "This is someone that I used to know" pretty much captures what happened. He used those exact words at a freshman mixer two days into freshman year when introducing me to his roommate. I stayed for one miserable year, then transferred to Michigan sophomore year and loved every second of it. He has since lost his hair.

You had the freedom to make your choice. You chose, changed your mind and did well in the end. I have a feeling that either way you would have been fine. That comes from the foundation you had by the time you were going to college.
And, in the end, he's getting his, and we have you as a valuable M Alum! We won!

Yes, it's his decision to make. But if she feels he's choosing a college for the wrong reason, I applaud her for attempting to persuade him otherwise. That's her responsibility as a parent.

I don't think much of her caring during a radio interview. I am beginning to feel sorry for her son. As much as he has seemed to shun the limelight, they seem to be actively pursuing it..
February 4th, 2014 at 7:23 PM ^
I don't know, after listening to the entire interview, it seemed like she wanted to clear things up regarding people misquoting her in the media.
February 4th, 2014 at 8:42 PM ^
Yes, and one has to speak to the media to be misquoted by the media. If they had not spoken with the media, there would be no cleanup needed in Aisle 3.

The woman is being totally self-centered. She doesn't want to have to cheer for MSU, period. She's not looking out for Malik's best interests. Malik wants to attend MSU.
The academic stuff is total nonsense. Malik can get a great education at MSU. For the typical student the signal of a U-M degree is worth something, although it mainly signals that, on average, the U-M student was smarter going in. That U-M graduates on average make higher salaries need have nothing to do with the education at U-M. Almost all of the difference can be explained by SAT scores and high school GPAs.
If she were acting this way and publicly denigrating U-M you'd be all over her. She is an ignorant buffoon. And a pathological liar. She actually said that when Joe Rexrode of the Freep called her for an interview that she didn't know the story would be published in the paper. That's just a lie.
Nothing she has said can be trusted. She's thrown Malik under the bus in public, saying he's not mature enough to make this decision himself. Some mom. If I were Malik, I'd be looking to get far away.

college experience. Not wanting him in a program where players brag about not having to go to class is a valid concern. There's absolutely nothing to indicate that they are putting their own interests above their son's.
February 4th, 2014 at 10:59 PM ^
The woman has already proven to be a brazen liar. Funny that she's the only one who overheard the conversation. Take off the blue goggles. If it makes you feel better to think that this story is remotely true then that says a lot about you -- and nothing good.
U-M is a great school. MSU is plenty good. The signal of an U-M degree means almost nothing to a football player on scholarship, since most would never be at U-M without the scholarship.

I've told my kids that they can go anywhere they want, but it has to be for a good reason. Party School is not a good reason.

Give him a bong, keg and my blessing with a kiss on the head and tell him to be sure and get good grades.
February 4th, 2014 at 6:47 PM ^
I thought she said she'd have to "kiss" his ass if Malik signed there, not "kick." Meaning because of all the trouble/grief the parents have caused MSU they'd need to beg for forgiveness if that's who Malik picked.

She can't stand the thought of rooting for MSU. Such lazy thinking on this board. She's an obvious liar -- "I didn't know Joe Rexrode was going to write a story when he asked to interview me." And it's only her word that some "bad" thing happened at MSU.
It's simple to see. It's about her. She's worried Malik will have too good an experience at MSU and she personally can't handle it. Ultimate Walmart Wolverine who is ignorant about almost everything when it comes to U-M and MSU.
Mike Sadler is enrolled in the MSU Ph.D. program at MSU. Mark Scarpinato is "retiring" after three years to pursue medical school. Let's hear about something comparable among U-M's players.

You pretty much told anyone who wants to find out who your brother is. He was in the same class as Marcus Vick, and left after one year before transferring to Colombia. It wouldn't be too hard to put together.
