MagnUM Ultimate

Submitted by zapata on

Michigan has quality Ultimate teams, both Men’s and Women’s. The Men’s team finished the regular season last year ranked 16 in the nation, and had a great tournament, ending up tied for 5th. There’s a good documentary about last year’s tournament run here:

This year they’re playing well but not getting the same results. Easterns, one of the major tournaments leading up to nationals, is being played this weekend in Myrtle Beach. Last year MagnUM kinda came out of nowhere to win the tourney; this year on the first day UM went 1-3, beating NC St., playing really close games against last year’s national runner-up UNC and a very good FSU squad, losing both late. Then they seemed to lose focus in the final game against a Northwestern team that hadn’t sniffed a win going in to the last game.

In the consolation bracket, they lost this morning to Maryland, then to Carleton College, a small school but Ultimate powerhouse in Minnesota. Right now they’re playing either Northwestern or Cornell for 15th place at the tourney. Follow them here: https://twitter.com/magnUMultimate.  Also, if you’re interested, the tourney semis are being streamed live right now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcmVzuUwGg4

And the finals  at 3:00 here: http://ultiworld.com/live/. Only available live without registering.

I was wondering when I'd see my first Mgoblog post about MagnUM.  I shoulda posted a year ago when we won Easterns.

For the people trying to figure out what Ultimate is, here is a highlight video for our captain last year:

We nominated him for the callahan from our team.  (Callahan is the heisman of Ultimate)

I came across this game 3 years ago and have since, gone from a neophyte to owner of one of the professional teams in the AUDL (professional league).  I even had a magnUM player on my team last year and one of M's women players (Flywheel) working with me.  I don't want to use MGoBlog as an advertisement for my personal interest in Ultimate, so won't embed any highlights, but if you don't know the game, get to know it.  It's unbelievably athletic, strong value set that every parent wants to teach their kids and played by over 5 million people in the US alone.  Awesome game.

Been an AUDL fan since the inaugural season, it totally blows the MLU out of the water. I'm also surprised at how good of a spectator sport Ultimate is, I never miss the games of the week on ESPN 3.

Hopefully the Mechanix can get things turned around, I don't want the AUDL to leave Detroit.

that you're an AUDL owner! I would love the Mechanix to do better this year; it would help the sport to grow in the Detroit area. Since I live in North Carolina now, I am excited about the Raleigh Flyers and the Charlotte Express. A guy I used to coach made the Flyers, so I am stoked for them to do well.

I understand you not wanting to post highlights, so I'll do it for you:

Well, this is not going how OP intended it.  FWIW, I knew exactly what you were talking about.  Good luck to the teams this weekend!

I thought maybe some people wouldn't know that UM has an Ultimate team. I did not expect to get negged just for talking about a successful University of Michigan sport. But it's good to see that there are some MGoBloggers aware of the Ultimate scene out there.

A couple of my buddies are on the team. It's actually crazy competitive. They're all great athletes. It's great to see the team get some recognition on the blog!

We should make a men's, women's and coed varsity team as soon as possible.  The sport of the future.

Very post match beer friendly.

Too bad about Easterns... but I have a feeling it was fun as all hell regardless.

I love all the football references in the video.

Ultimate is pretty big on campus and has been for nearly a decade.  I'm surprised so many people didn't know exactly what the OP was talking about.

Hey guys I'm on magnum reserve (basically the b team) and we placed 3rd at a tournament this weekend, losing to Ohio university and Marquette (their a teams I think, not 100% sure tho) but beating the Msu b team (13-2!!)

We call ourselves Reserve, but I'm not sure about MSU's B team.

We usually either share a field with MagnUM or B-Fly (women's B team), but our practices are separate.  The only times we really practice together are at the beginning of the year during tryouts, and then maybe a scrim or two throughout the year.

Also some results from the past two years, At regionals, MagnUM has placed 2nd and 1st (losing to illinois in 2013) and they have their nationals placement that people mentioned above, while Reserve has finished 8th and 10th out of 16 teams total (outplacing Notre Dame, Purdue and Kentucky's A teams in 2013 and Indiana's in 2014 among a bunch of other less notable teams).
