In their first regular season meeting since 1934,  Xavier holds on to knock off the #19 Buckeyes.

Happy evening to all!!

We actually do need our conference foes to start winning meaningful games otherwise if we beat them it won’t mean anything. Ask the PAC-12 what happens when the conference has a bad non-conference season.

More important for us to take care of business but as we saw a few days ago we’ll need more opportunities to amass statement wins.

I agree with this to the extent of if we finish 4th in the B1G but since we have higher aspirations then that, the strength of the entire conference will/should be irrelevant.  I believe Michigan has proven itself as a top tier program throughout the past 10 years and will be treated as such as long as we win games and stop losing to teams like Seton Hall. Go Blue!

Its all about the tournament.  Big Ten underwhelmed last year.  Gonna need to show something this year.  So far, not good.  Lets hope the teams improve heading into march.

But unlike in football, you still make the tournament with a weak strength of schedule if you win your games. Who cares if we get a 3 seed rather than a 1 seed? If we end up with something like a 12 seed it will be because we had a season that fell well below expectations, not that our strength of schedule was weak.

Look at all the times Kentucky got low seeds after tearing through a weak SEC. Or look at Gonzaga’s conference (I can’t even remember what it’s called). Our success doesn’t hing on that of the B1G as long as we live up to expectations. With the talent we’ve acquired and Juwan’s coaching acumen I would be surprised if that didn’t happen.

But the best part was at the under 12 timeout in the first half when the Xavier band played Hail to the Victors and put the Jumbotron camera on fans from Columbus who made the trip.  Just excellent trolling by Xavier.

I was in attendance.   It was phenomenal

“M Basketball: #19 Ohio State Falls to Xavier 71-65” Shouldn’t the title read:

“OSU Basketball: #19 Ohio State Falls to Xavier 71-65” This doesn’t have anything to do with UM basketball outside of a little fun that our rival lost. And our real rival Illinois lost to Marquette the other day

The big ten has quite a bit of talent but a lot of these teams don't look great right now. Just sort of disorganized and "off". I imagine a lot of it is more youth than even normal on some of these teams but I'm not sure that explains it all.

It's like Johns running around the court for UM looking totally lost...when I watch the other BIG games they all have 1-2 players like that.

It's only 4 games in and a lot of these teams (like UM) will gel but man do things look a little weird right now.

It's noteworthy-it is not yet a "story". Otherwise, due to the significant nuance of this game these mid-level schools with experienced, senior-laden rosters can compete well with the younger more physically talented programs...hello Seton Hall.

Hate to see it....lol

Rough week for the BIG TEN....hopefully its an opposite of last year where the conference was lauded as the best out there for most of the year and than disappointed in the tournament (Sans Michigan) for the most part.  Perhaps this year we'll take our lumps early and than surprise come tourney time.

It's possible that they're just not very good this year, or like Michigan, they need time to figure things out. They already had a close call against Akron, a game they probably should've lost.

They're probably still a tournament team, but I'm ever so thankful that Duane "I'm going to turn into Steph Curry when I play Michigan" Washington is no longer on their team.

The Bigten isn’t looking so hot in the non conference. 2-6 vs the Big East. 2-8 overall vs quality opponents and haven’t won any other meaningful game so far. Every ranked team besides Purdue has a loss so far.  We will see how the Bigten fares against the ACC soon. The conference was overrated last year and shit the bed in the tournament, maybe the opposite will happen this year for the Bigten.

Although I thought we would be really good (and I still do), we have a lot to improve upon after our Seton Hall game.  The Buckeyes on the other hand are just not very good.  Wheeler is not a big threat to score so that is going to make defending them quite a bit easier.  Their defense is just bad too.  Liddell is a stud but most of this year is more than likely going to be their team giving him the ball and watching him try to make plays.  I do not expect them to be a contender in the B1G this year.

Best the B1G be trash before I ever root for;

Sparty

Ohio

Indiana

Illinoise

Wisconsin under Bo Ryan

Purdue when coached by Gene Keady

Maryland coached by Turgeon

ANY PITINO COAHED TEAM EVER

If it does not effect Michigan's standing I might not root against:

Northwestern

Purdue under Matt Painter

Nebraska as long as Creighton remains the best basketball team in the state.

Penn State hoops only - they get my pity.

Just popping in to say --

Does any team have a nonconference schedule as cupcakey/ridiculous as Iowa does? I mean, my God.

  • Longwood (what? who?)
  • UMKC (huh?)
  • North Carolina Central (ok, that exists?)
  • Alabama State (most recent opponent, and probably the "biggest" name to date)

On tap for them, in terms of non-conference:

  • Western Michigan
  • Portland State
  • Virginia (hey! an actual opponent of sorts -- they are 1-2 currently, though)
  • Iowa State (perhaps ok, at best)
  • Utah State
  • Southeastern Louisiana
  • Western Illinois

And then finally, it's on to full-time conference play.

But I mean...what a JOKE! That's 11 pretty much guaranteed Ws right there.
