Do you think this helps or hurts our odds of keeping Harbaugh you think?

NFL teams won't publicly announce interviews with college coaches, but you still usually hear about them from NFL insiders. When Matt Rhule (by my count the last active college coach to leave for the NFL) was testing the waters, his interview schedule was picked up by insiders: https://twitter.com/RapSheet/status/1213537711484747776

The fact we'e heard nothing, yet, from NFL insiders connecting Harbaugh to the Raiders is a very positive sign.

It’d be different with Harbaugh and the Raiders than it would be with Rhule.  The Raiders will interview other coaches first (interim coach and minority coach, in this case Mayo), because they have to.  Maybe one of those guys hits it out of the park (both seem like good candidates) but if they don’t, that’s when the Raiders will officially reach out to Harbaugh to see if they can convince him.  The Raiders wouldn’t be interviewing Harbaugh — it’d be the other way around

Huh?  They have to interview other guys first?  Why, is this the civil service?  They don't have to do that.  It would make a lot more sense that they wouldn't waste anyone's time and would go straight to the guy they want.  "Hits it out of the park"?  Hiring in the NFL is 99% based on existing relationships and past performance history.  Both of which, in the case of the Raiders, would have them calling up Jimmy first thing.

The Raiders have to interview the interim coach who just got the to the playoffs because the players have advocated for him.  The Raiders have to interview a minority coach because those are the rules.  If it gets out that the Raiders contact Harbaugh before those interviews, then they will be viewed as sham interviews, which will either a) upset the players, or b) get them in trouble with the league, because if Harbaugh talks to the Raiders it’s not an interview, it’s just a negotiation.  The Raiders already have their opinions on Harbaugh, they are presumably very positive, and the only thing that changes that decision process is if someone they interview before calling Harbaugh makes them re-evaluate.

Yup.  Gruden had final say with player acquisitions anyway.  Mayock admitted as much when he was first hired.  I remember him saying something along the lines of "I'm just hoping I don't screw it up" when referring to what Gruden had planned for.

It's a shame Mayock's name will be on those draft classes.  Gruden was the brains for that franchise... which explains a lot.

Hurts. Harbaugh is starting to reflect poorly on the university. This is way longer than what should be needed to make a decision. If his heart isn’t in it, he needs to pack his shit. This is getting ridiculous.

Lol we had a President fired this week for banging an underling and Harbaugh is the one who reflects poorly on the university? GTFOOH.

I can see four paths, only one of them reflects poorly on Harbaugh in the short term.

1, Harbaugh is retained and as part of his new contract, it will be clear that he focused not just on himself but on other things that make the team better (NIL improvements, more money fo assistants etc).   While briefly painful, this won’t reflect poorly on Harbaugh (unless the team underperforms next year) or the University and we are probably closer to a national championship than we have been since sometime in the Carr years.

2. Harbaugh stays without much better of a deal related to NIL, but still probably lots more money.   We probably go through this whole process again next year.   Ultimately reflects poorly on everyone in the process, but Harbaugh probably redeems himself if he turns in another 11+ win season.   This seems to me like the most unlikely outcome.

3. Harbaugh goes, but as part of process, still ends up getting university to move things on NIL.    Long term outlook here is based on coaching hire, but Harbaugh leaves with football team in better shape than when he came.   If that ends up reflecting poorly on the university, it will have more to do with the hire than Harbaugh- late as it is, we would have tons to offer a good coach.

4. Harbaugh leaves and the university hasn’t budged on the NIL.  That will reflect poorly on the athletic department, not on Harbaugh.   Unless Warde pulls a homerun hire out of nowhere, we are probably screwed.

From a leverage standpoint, Schlissel getting fired happened this weekend.  If Harbaugh is trying to strike a deal re NIL/academics/coaching salaries, his timing is perfect.

I'm wondering if what's going on is a call by Harbaugh to get the school to decide if UM is going to be all-in serious about competing at the highest level for players, or to continue as things are. He has said and has shown he's not all about money (for himself), so academics/NIL very well could be the big issues, and would explain what's taking this long.

Who says a decision hasn’t been made? Business as usual. He’s working hard every day, he’s recruiting, picked up a commit over the weekend. Was down in Florida visiting our top 2023 commit today.

Realistically, there’s nothing that needs to be announced. He’s under contract. He’s coming to work every day and doing his job, and appears to be doing it well. He hasn’t been offered an NFL deal for him to publicly turn down. Just fringe media rumors with no substantial information.

He doesn’t need to address every rumor or speculation just to appease the fans and fit their desired timeline.

In general, I agree with your statement that not every rumor needs to be addressed. However, this is sort of unique in that he has publicly addressed this saying that he is listening to NFL offers. So…until he publicly stated that he is no longer entertaining those offers, we have to assume that we don’t know 100% who our coach is heading into next season. Personally, I feel the same way I have for the past 7+ years. Harbaugh is the right guy for the job, and I want him here as long as possible, but no hard feelings if he leaves.

Unless I’m missing something, Harbaugh has not publicly said he’s listening to NFL offers. We heard secondhand from a recruit that he said this, at which point we’re relying on a 17-18 year old kid to understand what Harbaugh said, the context of it, and to accurately relay that information to us. We don’t know what Harbaugh actually said, the context of the statement, the intent of what he was saying, or if the recruit interpreted it properly.

The Raiders have indicated they will interview interim coach Rich Bisaccia about potentially getting the job full-time. The Raiders also have requested an interview with Patriots inside linebackers coach Jerod Mayo.

As for GM, they requested an interview with Patriots director of player personnel Dave Ziegler.

Definitely hurts. It's possible that they were planning on doing this anyway, but remember that Harbaugh left the NFL to begin with because he didn't get along with the 49ers' front office. He and Mark Davis seem to like each other, and now Davis can make him the proverbial offer-he-can't-refuse: a Pete Carroll-like deal in which Harbaugh is coach and GM with Davis as the only person he has to answer to. That might appeal to him as a best-of-both-worlds situation. He can have the control over personnel that college coaches have while coaching at the highest level and not having to deal with the constant recruiting grind and babysitting that comes with being a college coach.

I hope they don't offer him such a deal, but if they do, it might be hard for him to turn it down.

Raiders’ GM was out in any event as he was a personal friend of Gruden and hired with Gruden’s endorsement. The other piece in motion is that the Raiders are actively interviewing for the GM position.  Too early to tell but if the Raiders hire a GM soon that diminishes the chances JH gets the terms he wants. I think JH leaving for the NFL will come down to whether he gets full control and that means no Trent Baalke running interference.
