Luke Hughes 4-Goal/Hockey Sweep POSBANG

Submitted by rob f on January 28th, 2023 at 9:33 PM

A 4-goal game just doesn't happen often at this level, worthy of a POSBANG!

What a comeback victory and sweet sweep, after falling behind 2-0 in the opening minute of tonight's game. May this victory propel our young team on to great things!

Massive win. Big split at PWR #1 Minnesota last week (when the team absolutely belonged at the same level) and then a sweept of what was a top 5 PWR team at home, after being down. Just huge.

Okay so I watched the game without the sound on and I don’t know college hockey rules that well. How do we feel about the major penalty negating the first goal and the non-call of goaltender interference on PSU’s fourth(?) goal?

I know the NHL doesn’t have a major review, but that hit didn’t look that bad to me. I was 50/50 on the interference call. I’ll add that I was 50/50 because I couldn’t really tell if the PSU guy got hit into Portillo. Portillo’s upper body was out of the crease too but he was clearly trying to cover up the puck.

They're trying to reduce the number of concussions that these kids suffer so I can't fault them with that but the rule apparently has zero tolerance and they're calling 5 minute majors when some player shoves his helmet in the other players shoulder.  We seem to get at least one of these every game and it's gotten out of hand.

On the other call I didn't see much other than possibly a stick that kept Portillo from getting up.

Announcers were pretty bad and had trouble figuring out what was going on so you probably had a better experience with the sound off other than the sound of Hughes's goals going in the net because they were shot with a lot of force (except for the ugly one that creeped in).

Warde needs to stop eating all the profits and repaint the logos under the ice at Yost.

Gaudy. Faded. And the BIG logo should be 1/10th the size and close to the near boards so it can’t be seen. Oh and fuck ND being allowed to play in our conference.

I would love for Alex to devote a piece to the penalty situation this team is dealing with.  We are literally averaging a major every game.  I haven't been able to watch most of the games but from the game thread it seems that the whistle isn't even.....but could be fan bias.  Are our players that undisciplined?  Are they ignoring majors against the other teams that would even things out and make us rage less?

Can’t remember the exact timing but after the BS major penalty disallowing our goal, we have a guy on a breakaway get slashed from behind so obviously that his glove literally flew off his hand from the slash…no call.

I watch whenever the BIg allows me to without the + nonsense but I thought the game was fairly evenly called.

But the double whammy of the nonsense major that in turn disallows a goal was egregious. If only because a 5 min major is really tough. Losing a goal even tougher. So could potentially have been a 2-3 goal swing (1 disallowed, 1-2 during extended PP)

The rest of the game seemed even handed but when one dude scores 4 goals in a come from behind win where PSU hasn’t lost consecutive games it feels a little better.

Could be an indirect result of having an AD that doesn't stand up for his coaches and programs when things go against them.  We know this as an absolute fact that Warde does not because he's hung Harbaugh out to dry twice now when he's complained about officiating (2016 OSU and - I think - the NW game where Haskins was called for holding as he was tackled).  He has also admonished Harbaugh for publicly defending his team against unprovoked attacks from others (specifically Gene Smith).  He also left Juwan Howard undefended during the UMD and UW fiascos - esp UW.

If Warde doesn't publicly back his football and basketball coaches, you know - the two guys that (literally) pay all the bills, does anyone think he'd possibly back the hockey coach?  Or the baseball coach?  Or any other coach?

I posit that any targeting of Michigan hockey by officials isn't a conspiracy, but rather is from the simple fact that they know there won't be any negative response from Michigan for a bad call.  So they don't even have to think about it - you only need a few examples that prove you take the rules seriously to get a positive review from the league office.

The best part of the big conference coverage was the complete disdain with which Hughes tolerated the post-game interview from the two buffoons who called the game.

Professional. Responsive but not really interested. Without being caught on camera you could almost “hear” his internal eye rolls after each nonsensical question.

“My dudes, I’m a good looking UM hockey player that just scored 4 goals in a single game. I’m not trying to be sitting here when I could be rehabbing with some coeds on a Saturday night after an amazing come from behind (hey oh!) victory.”

I was only able to watch the highlights, but I'm wondering how Edwards (#73) got a major penalty that nullified the first goal when I didn't see him on the ice? Did they get the number wrong? I checked the box score, and it said Edwards got the penalty. I also didn't see anyone hit in the head either.

Yost was on FIRE tonight!  Best atmosphere in a very long time, and that’s obviously saying a lot.  When Hughes scored his 4th to take the lead for good that’s the loudest I’ve ever heard it.

An all time great performance that I’ll never forget.

The Casey injury sucked. Hoping it was just a knee to the calf bruise (couldn't quite tell exactly what happened). Hope Samo comes back healthy soon too. Great win though, needed that sweep.
