LSU Insiders Speculate Les Miles is Headed to Michigan

Submitted by IvyLeague on

The title says it all. That's the chatter from the folks over there. Also, Les Miles tweeted "Geux Blue.... beat em in the Horseshoe!!" yesterday.

as a person or HC (at UM, I admit he's a good HC). However, I'm so low and in need of something that gives me hope that I'd take and support Miles if the long shot of getting Harbaugh doesn't pan out. *for legal reasons I've been told it's not wise to post my Miles stories publicly but they are 100% true and 100% atrocious*

If they save threads from '11-ish. My PM box there if I could remember my password as I haven't even logged on there in 3 years. Here? I believe I posted very short versions (still long) over the last few years. Probably between the time of the Hoke hire and roughly a year ago. I actually hope they are deleted. At one point I just posted them with no thought that it's a potential defamation lawsuit waiting to happen. Sure, the odds are low but some is so specific regarding a recruit, his gf, UM & Miles that it's not out of the question. Low but I'd rather not take the chance. That said, IT IS MY OPINION that Les Miles is a very vulgar man with very loose morals. My opinion only.

He's going to recruit fine! Christ look at what Brady hoke has done? If your athlete who is a big time recruit, are you more aware of Brady Hoke or Les Miles? Easy answer, he'll recruit fine. He could be a could bridge to when Jim Harbaugh's next NFL team gets sick of him too. Behind Harbaugh, miles or bob stoops are my choices. Only concern with miles is his time management bluffs/problems that have occurred frequently. It just seems that he could be our best realistic option. I would be a little surprised that Schlissel would okay this if true seeing how Miles has a little bit of a history, fiction or nonfiction, all stories related to his character.

There is no doubt Miles wants to come to Michigan. This is probably his last chance at the Michigan job. If he doesn't get it this time, he never will. It all depends if the first choice Harbaugh declines. If so, then it's probably Miles' job to lose . So long as Lloyd doesn't continue to meddle.

He had his time. His time is done. He's quickly becoming the Abe Simpson of Ann Arbor. Thanks for everything you did for U-M....but if you don't butt out, we will put you in a home.

"You are what your record says you are"-- Bill Parcells

By that Measure, Miles is a Great Head Coach:

131-49  .728  1 NC

Its a very rare HC that can have numbers like that.

And unlike Hoke, he can actually use the "our team is really young" narrative, because he actually develops and improves talent.  First three years won 10+ games, then had to reload, won 8, then 9, then a four year run of winning 10 or more games per year.  And this year is another reload season for him.

A key factor in the success of any coach is having an understanding of the culture of the program he/she is taking over. That's not to say that a coach can't work on changing the culture...most successful ones will do that. But if they don't understand the "status quo", he/she will likely stumble out of the gate. Ergo...a "Michigan Man" (I personally don't care for the term) has a level of understanding of the history, tradition, and culture that others do not and -- provided they have other qualities to be a good coach -- can build on those rather than allow them to be impediments to success.

yeah, but you have people here who would take Miles over Bob Stoops for no reason other than he's LES MILES MICHMAN ANN ARBOR WOO WOO. We know this because many of them were pissing all over the idea of Stoops and are now totally on board with hiring Les. The arguments against Mullen from a cultural/recruiting perspective, for example, all apply equally to Les and yet are simply brushed over when it comes to him.

People here talk a big game about wanting to end this culture of the MICHIGAN MAN. But when you ask them to name who they want on our coaching staff, it seems to come down to LES WITH TYRONE WHEATLEY AND MIKE HART AND MALLORY AS DC AND BRAD BATES AS AD. We're a part of the problem

The lack of sustained success and the different recruiting culture down South are legitimate concerns. Miles has sustained success and is familiar with how recruiting goes in the Midwest. There are legitimate reasons to support Miles over Mullen other than the "MICHIGAN MAN! ERMAGOD!" .

Mike Hart is a good coach. I've seen the results. The guy's RBs produce. I'd take him over Fred anyday of the week.

Miles hasn't recruited in the midwest in 20 years. Mullen has more recent experience in this area of the country than he does. Miles also walked into a team that had won a national title two years prior and played in three straight SEC title games, Mullen walked into a team that had two winning seasons in the previous 9.

Basically, Les Miles has a very easy job and Dan Mullen has an extremely difficult one. Comparisons between the two on record are borderline silly. Even Gerry effing DiNardo could manage 10 wins at LSU.

This is definitely true and something I've brought up before (the Michigan Man thing). I wouldn't be all doom and gloom if we hired Les, but my preference is certainly for someone who is a lot younger.

I really like Sumlin. I know a lot of people are down on him after this year, but I'd be extremely pleased with that hire.

I'd also like Mullen. It would be the most LOL-worthy hire because of Rich Rod.

Even though he strikes me as sort of a sleazeball, we could certainly pry someone like Gus Malzahn away from Auburn given his salary.

Obviously there's Harbaugh but I don't believe he's coming.

Because people are brainwashed and cling to items of comfort. I'd take Bob Stoops just as soon as Harbaugh or Miles. I don't think Harbaugh is gonna be an option and if Stoops left Oklahoma I see him more interested in Florida or ND but beyond that I'd don't see a ton of other great options for our current situation. Unfortunately I'm starting to believe that change just for change's sake isn't going to do us any good unless we can get a proven commodity and I don't see a ton of them on the current carousel.

Miles and Harbaugh are actually good coaches so your "brainwashed" charge really has no solid basis.

I do like Stoops myself and would take him as soon as I would any other.

There are options, but it would take some effort to find them. Just because you are unaware of them that does not mean they don't exist. There are more than a few coaches who are capable of supplanting Brady Hoke.

One option that is potentialy lethal for the program is retaining Hoke. His career is essentially finished at UM. He can't recruit because he is perceived as a dead man walking. If you can't recruit you cannot last long. At this point Hoke cannot be an l option at HC because of all the swirling rumors and lack of fan support. The negativity surrounding him demands a dismissal.Brady Hoke is a drag on the athletic department at this point.

Forget the Michigan man stuff. If a head coach who has been at one of the top 15 programs in the country for 10 years has won 10 or more games in 7 of those 10 years and finished in the Top 10 5 times wants to leave said school to coach Michigan, you take it. Harbaugh and Miles are so head and shoulders above the rest of the field it isn't funny.

LSU end of season coaches poll rank during the Miles era:

2005: 5

2006: 3

2007: 1

2008: UR

2009: 17

2010: 8

2011: 2

2013: 14

2014: currently 24

He has a pretty consistent pattern of 3-4 years of competing for championships and then needs a year or two to reload, while still winning at least 8 games.  I can easily see him making Michigan, with the talent Hoke has brought in, becoming instant top 10- top 15 team.

Fuck it. Why not? And, can you dumbasses that say he won't be able to recruit without his "fertile" back yard stop it? A bumbling MAC coach was pulling in 4-5* guys at UM the last few years. I'm sure Les and his ring will recruit just fine.

This is only partly in jest. Having a guy like this as UM's coach might be a tough thing for Schlissel to accommodate himself to.

Honestly I don't want anything to do with Les. His quarterbacks are terrible and yay for 3 plays and a punt. So fucking sick of michigan's constant longing to be the same thing it was pre 2007. Michigan will never learn.

CoachBP6

I am just sick of always trying to emulate the past. The boring offenses in this day and age don't compete with the big boys, even Alabama has went with more modern style, but Michigan doesn't want to change. I'm not saying les wouldn't win, but I don't really have much faith in his abilities to defeat urban, or even get us to contend for a playoff. The only manBall coach capable of winning titles here at UM is Jim Harbaugh. That of course is an opinion. Someday Michigan will break the mold... The year 3000 they will finally modernize the program.

SalvatoreQuattro

Alabama, FSU, MSU, Wisconsin...teams that have had a lot of success running Manball offenses. Bama, FSU, and MSU are more diverse than Wisconsin obviously, but at their core they run Manball.

Manball is NOT the problem. People need to get over that fallacious assumption. It's the coaching. In other words if UM was running a spread, but was poorly coached it too would struggle. Modernized offense or not it would not matter.

I don't want a rigid mind that can only run one scheme. A truly innovative mind is not a prisoner of doctrine.

Personally, I'd love to see  the protean New England-style offense here in Ann Arbor. One week spread. The next Manball. Adapt your offense to the weaknesses of your opponent.

This probably isn't realistic as there isn't enough time to install the necessary concepts, but to me this is the most innovative offense out there.

CoachBP6

I agree with you, from the standpoint of coaching. However many of the offenses you have described have become more hybrid over the years. I just wish for once we would become cutting edge type football program and find the unorthodox coach that will do it. Michigan would never hire a Gus malzahn or chip Kelly bc they aren't Michigan men and hadn't had much, if any of a HC resume. Instead we will ONLY take a HC associated with the program that have the same offensive ideals and core football beliefs (RR aside of course). I just hope someday we Take a guy bc he is a great football mind and not bc he once played or ooached at Michigan.

Former Michigan player and assistant Bob Thornbladh claims that Les Miles would "crawl over razor blades" to coach Michigan, and that Harbaugh still loves the program and may be interested as well.

I know this is only speculation, but 'Blade is probably better connected and more in the know than most.

I'd be really happy with either.
