Looks like Juwan was right to pass on Scooby

Blown knee meant he never played and now he will spend much of the year fighting a rape charge.

Am I interpreting this post right? Is it implied that Juwan correctly anticipated a rape allegation? Is his intuition that good? It seems like a super weird thing to say.

Well, he's just not some random dude who played basketball. He's the 2020 Mr. Basketball for the State of Michigan. That's a pretty big story. What he did is utterly reprehensible. The details in the story are quite sickening.

In light of the recent NCAA ruling on Baylor, this story is a great example on how these types of cases should happen. The police made an arrest and Butler dropped him immediately. There was no cover up, no looking the other way.

Part of Juwan’s role leading MBB is choosing guys of character.  He seems to do a really good job of that.  There have been a lot of great personalities around this program.

Who is to say what he did or didn’t see in scooby?  These things suck and range from he should be in prison to why did she ruin that guys life.

I mean, we don't know what Juwan was thinking, but absolutely with some recruits a coach won't feel comfortable with his character for all sorts of reasons. This is very possible. And look at this team and what he says about constructing a recruiting class. He puts character and family at the top of his list. He is building a culture and this is definitely part of it.

wrong. the answer is clearly no, as I am on here a lot and I don't follow sports or recruiting.

i'm here for brian's takes on ann arbor politics and to be told who, and what, to vote for. i am also on here so i can refuse to use capital letters. they make me use them all the time at work but not here man ...... not here.

So you are suggesting that besides updating what happened to a recruit for last year's class who was routinely part of the updates on this site and whom many on this site argued on this comment board that they hoped Juwan would bring him into the class....that the OP should also have linked several past articles on the said athlete for those who have poor memories?

The coaches that really care about the qualities and character of the kids they recruit and bring to their school have to basically do background checks with their HS coaches and teachers.  My daughter is a senior and is being recruited for soccer right now, so we are experiencing it.  Juwan may have heard something that luckily steered him away from this recruitment.

I'd like a world in which we see a young athlete's struggles as more of an opportunity to hope they get the support they need and correct their ways rather than assessing whether they were of some benefit to a sports team.

But I know that's all just virtue signaling so I'll stop there.

I don't disagree with your sentiment. However, homeboy is facing a rape charge. That isn't like getting in a bar fight or struggling with a substance. A lot of people that commit a sexual assault do so more than once. It is different from a lot of other crimes, and should be treated as such. Yeah he should get therapy and hopefully he can be reformed into a productive member of society...but the psychology of abusers is a whole different breed.

I'd like to see a world where people don't give a rat's ass about the struggles of a young athlete when he does something so reprehensible to a young woman. I hope this woman can recover mentally and emotionally from this horrendous attack. This is the sort of incident that scars a person for life. Scooby can rot in jail and never get any support to "correct [his] ways" as far as I'm concerned.

I love Juwan but you cant give him credit for this. We dodged a bullet as a program but thats just dumb luck. With that said i cant wait for basketball to tipoff!! GO BLUE!

You do not know.  And Coach Howard is not going to tell us.  Interesting that both us and MSU did not pursue him.  Beyond that, sheer speculation on what they did or did not know or find out in their investigation.  What we can say with confidence is that our current and immediately preceding head basketball coaches have brought in players that have not had these kind of issues.

Sad story, man. He's a good kid, and I think he'll be able to get himself back on the straight and narrow if he can surround himself with a good environment.

As a Butler grad, I'll point out that he was already at one of the highest accountability and highest character programs in the country. It's not like he was at a school that condoned this kind of behavior. I hope he gets help and turns himself into a better person, but a good environment was already there.

Yes, that is the best part of the story—he’s not a Michigan athlete. If you weren’t sold at the bum knee, certainly the criminal sexual conduct convinced you. /s

How about “What a horrible thing to happen. Thoughts and prayers to the victim” instead of “We dodged a bullet!”
