[? LOCKED] OT U of M regent refers to Whitmer as witch, jokingly suggests assassination

Submitted by M Vader on March 27th, 2021 at 12:35 PM

Bad look for a elected regent, in my opinion.

[I believe it's time to lock this thread up. For the most part we've kept the discussion civil and I thank you all for that.

At this point, I think all the angles have been covered well enough.

Besides, there's Sweet 16 ? to enjoy. ---rob f]

My wife and I like to ask this question when talking about future plans: "What does great look like?"

So I ask you regarding this thread, what does great look like?

My guess is that, for the OP, great looks like a civilized, intelligent discussion where rational people can separate political affiliation from a discussion and critique of a leader at one of the best universities in the world on failing to uphold a standard of basic human decency.

Excellent reply, "DavidP814".

I'll leave this thread on the board and unlocked ? for now, as long as everyone follows David's well-stated advice.

After all, Weiser is a U of M Regent and this is newsworthy to the Michigan community.

He’s done. Guess he didn’t want to be a regent any longer.

Great means not having to see a mental health professional with a minor in proctology because you were an asshole.

Weiser's a jackass, but he won't resign and there's no mechanism for forcing him out before he's up for re-election.

His fellow Regents can't boot him out, and their calls for him to step down are highly unlikely to lead to a concerted push at the top levels of U-M to get him to resign because he's a major U-M donor.

I'd guess you're right, and if so my blanket statement was incorrect.

That said, the vast majority of recall elections don't succeed. Even if enough recall initiative signatures could be gathered and an election was held, my hunch is that Weiser could get enough votes from outstate areas which typically are Republican strongholds to defeat the recall.

For a random early spring Saturday in a non-election year, the MGoBoard is really having itself a day.

(edit: notwithstanding the above, it's embarrassing for the BoR and UM)

Governors will always face scrutiny, but the fact that Secretaries of State are drawing the ire of douchecanoes like this is simply ridiculous.

Jocelyn Benson has more skills in her pinky finger than this guy has in his entire family tree. Maybe SHE should be Regent.

You say that, but Jocelyn Benson was just found to have disregarded state laws with her election guidance last year.  I didn't read his comments but if I had to guess, that is why she is in his crosshairs.

He said: “Ma’am, other than assassination, I have no other way other than voting out. OK?

How is this “joking about assassination”?

The original article took the quoted comments out of context and the OP took it even further. Did you even READ the article?

Also, the assassination comment was in response to what could be done about REPUBLICANS who voted against Trump. OP makes it appear it was directed at Whitmer.

That said, calling the 3 democratic leaders “witches” is silly. I’m guessing he wanted to call them bitches and decided against that. Oops!

I read the article, I know who the comments were in regards to and how about this... don't fucking even mention the word to begin with. Cool?

The rhetoric is reckless and completely unnecessary, regardless for whom it is meant for and we should all hope that anyone associated with the University should know and act better than this.

Agree completely. Doesn't matter which side of the political spectrum you are on AND which side you are talking about, but whatever happened to civility in public discourse?  He represents one of the greatest universities in the world and this is not appropriate.

If this was said by a msu or osu regent, regardless of party affiliation, we would be having a field day here.  Sad.

There is a way of telling whether she is a witch.  What do you do with witches?  Burn them!  And what do you burn apart from witches?  Wood!  Why do witches burn?  Because they are made of wood.  So how do we tell if she is made of wood?  Does wood sink in water?  No, it floats!  What also floats in water?  A duck!  Exactly, so logically, if she weighs the same as a duck she's made of wood and therefore a witch.

I am sure witches is do not want to be associated in any way with someone as evil as the governor.

The guy is known as being a douchebag here in A2. Sure he's taking it in the shorts financially these days.

For some reason I doubt he is suffering.  People like Weiser use their political influence to buy tax breaks that let them pay taxes at lower rates than university administrative staff forcing the university to beg him for donations for funding leaving them impotent to do anything when he mouths off and does stuff to embarrass the institutions.  It’s not a liberal or conservative thing - there are plenty of liberal assholes too. It’s just the season for embittered and defeated right wingers to act out.

It has to be said that he was responding to a question of how to deal with the Republican congressmen who voted to impeach Trump.  Let that sink in.  This is a Republican, hinting that the way to deal with other Republicans - guilty only of the crime of voting for their conscience - is to murder them.

And for the "He's joking" crowd, he makes these comments in an environment in which multiple groups of people have plotted to carry out assassinations of elected officials whose policies they disagree with, including targeting Vice President Pence for daring carry out his duties as dictated by the constitution.

Utterly despicable.

Yeah, I don't understand, unless you're a gigantic fucking idiot or asshole, why you would joke about the assassination of a Governor who's already dealt with a kidnapping and murder plot.  Like, is it that hard not to be an utter imbecile?
