Lions 6-1 odds to win NFC? Are we jinxed now?

Submitted by JJB2 on

Nice to see the positive attention for the Lions, but man, I'm hoping Schwarz keeps their heads straight.  The've moved from 30-1 to 6-1...hmmm..I think Vegas is slightly over optimistic, but let's hope they know more than we do.

I guess I feel like...believe it when I see it.

Tell Stafford to stay away from Peppers and he'll be just fine. I'm expecting much improvement this year but expect them to finish third in the division behind the Packers and Bears.  I definitely think they are finally headed in the right direction though.

with the lions. As much as hype as they are receiving, they are very few teams that could win a division with that back seven. Their biggest weakness from last season hasn't been addressed, and addressing that within the next two weeks would really increase my confidence on the lions.

Like everyone else, I always feel like we might finally have a good year every year, but I'm more confident now than ever.

Why? Because I'm basing my throughts on last year's results instead of preseason wins. Our defensive line is going to kill people this year, and that's an instant boost to the secondary, which will hopefully get an upgrade in free agency anyway.

On offense, we actually had a decent backup in Hill for the first time in forever, but if Stafford stays healthy, I think we can really start to burn some defenses. Add in a hopefully healthy Best and Leshoure to do some of the bruiser work and we have a legitimate chance to compete with anyone.

I agree that the back 7 needs a lot of help, but linebacker is a much more pressing need than secondary right now. To help Levy out they need to sign Tulloch from Tennessee and I've heard that they're going to go hard after Justin Durant from Jacksonville. Add a solid corner like Joseph or Cromartie or even resign Houston and they'll be golden.

but he's overrated as a player.  Plus, he's a locker room problem.  SD Chargers couldn't wait to get rid of him so they traded him away which tells you something because you don't trade away talented CB since it's hard to find them.  NYJ isn't re-signing him.

He wasn't a great cover CB but he's a playmaker.  In the grand scheme of the CB position, I much rather have CBs who can cover but can't make plays than CB who are average in coverage but is a great playmaker.

1 LB and 1 CB in FA, maybe 2 LBs if they have enough cap space.

My dream FA would be Nnamdi Asomugha and Justin Durant.

Realisitically, I think the Lions will sign Durant and Joseph(but I hear he wants 8-9 mil a year so that may be too steep for a solid CB, I much rather spend a few extra mil on Scrabble).

They'll resign Houston and Avril.  The defense should take a step forward as an unit.

are going to win their division.  You heard it here first.  Actually, not really, but I just repeat verbatim what I've just read on some sports blog.

If they get the Cornerback with the crazy name that I could never spell, it would be a huge improvement in the secondary. Adding that to the DL play, there'd be a realistic opportunity for NFC contention

I don't think this was posted here before, but the Business Journals' On Numbers columnist used a statistical analysis to rate which teams in each of the four major sports were the most difficult to root for. Not that any sort of analysis was needed to conclude this, but the Lions came out on top (or, I suppose, the bottom). Among all the teams in the four major sports, only the Washington Nationals were ranked as more difficult to root for than the Lions.

The column on the NFL can be found here.

The column on the overall rankings is here.

Odds makers generally know what they are doing.  If they didn't Vegas wouldn't be in business like it is today.  I definitely think it is safe to say they know what they are doing, but at the same time it seems like risky business to put your eggs in the Detroit Lions' basket..

This doesn't make much sense because the article says the Lions are 18-1 for the Super Bowl, but on Bodog they have them at 35-1. There usually isn't that big a gap. Also, is this the MGM Detroit book or the MGM book overall?

6-10 to 8-8 or 9-7 would be progess. I am  not holding out a lot of hope that they win the NFC this year unless there is a vicious outbreak of the plague or something. They could potentially fill some holes in free agency and shock the world, but winning the NFC is a couple years off, I think.
