LeBron gives Ohio players Beats by Dre

Submitted by wresler120 on

LeBron James has given all of the Ohio players a free pair of Beats by Dre according to Urban Meyer's twitter account, and many players twitter feeds. The gifts were given as a token of congratulations for making the NC game.

It seems to me like this should be a NCAA violation, it definitely gives them an edge in recruiting. Now Urban can tell players if you come to Ohio, you'll be shocked by the gift LeBron is giving the team next year.

Special thanks to @KingJames @beatsbydre for their support to the Buckeyes!

I disagree, although I think they're really overpriced. I did a good amount of research and ended up buying a pair of Solo HD's when they went on sale for $80 after Black Friday. At that price point I don't think I could have done much better, although it's a different story at MSRP.

I have a pair of NAD Model 20's I bought (locally) in 1985 that also still work great (many speakers last a very long time) -and they have actual tweeters!  But your Bose 301's do have something my NAD's (and pretty much every other speaker) don't -light bulbs!  I would bet, though, you'll be due for a re-foaming job sooner than later -but that's not an indication of quality.

(That being said....thank you for your service to our country!  I hate to be critical of any service member, but I show Bose no mercy! :) )

...which is what most people are referencing, the Beats headphones were designed to compensate for the low end losses that murdered the sound of rap and r&b tracks played off mp3s.  Beats cans are somewhat more neutral nowadays, but obviously still have that stigma which irks those who are not Beats' target consumer (Michigan fans are not Beats consumers practically by definition).

If you want cost-effective, high quality over the ear headphones get some Sennheisers/Grados/Audio Technicas.  Bose are fine but also seriously overpriced and tailored for older ears.  And whatever you do, don't get high fidelity studio monitors - unless you are listening to lossless music everything will sound like it is coming out Grapentine's PA.

How would that not be impermissible benefits? I personally don't think it should be an issue (the players should be able to take gifts from whoever they want imo), but that must technically be against the rules right?

value allowed for the national championship, that would be in the news. They typically get the max even for lesser bowls.

This just amounts to a booster picking up part of the bowl's tab in exchange for some publicity. I can't see what rule that would be breaking. Bowls already pass along gifts from sponsors and local businesses looking for publicity. It's only noteworthy here because it's Lebron and getting something from him might be a big deal. I wouldn't be surprised to see other celebrities follow suit.
