LeBron gives Ohio players Beats by Dre

Submitted by wresler120 on

LeBron James has given all of the Ohio players a free pair of Beats by Dre according to Urban Meyer's twitter account, and many players twitter feeds. The gifts were given as a token of congratulations for making the NC game.

It seems to me like this should be a NCAA violation, it definitely gives them an edge in recruiting. Now Urban can tell players if you come to Ohio, you'll be shocked by the gift LeBron is giving the team next year.

Special thanks to @KingJames @beatsbydre for their support to the Buckeyes!

people on this blog are the only ones who think that's a slam. My wife went to school in Ohio and of her friends, 90% of them are buckeye fans and I'm guessing 75% of them call OSU "Ohio" on a regular basis. If ever Ohio University should ever come up in conversation, it's "Ohio U". Calling Ohio State just "Ohio" is about as offensive to them as calling Central Michigan "central". Everybody knows who you're talking about, and nobody cares.

The NCAA is such a fucking joke. Smoke weed and we ban you for a year. Make the championship game and boosters are allowed to give each player $300 headphones

Do you guys really think OSU would accept the gift and then tweet about it if it was a violation?

Think about it.

I know it's OSU, but come on. They're not THAT naive.

And if this was Woodson and they were blue, we'd be all "oooh Charles is so awesome."

This thread sounds like a bunch of MSU fans in the 90s. I can't wait until Harbaugh starts kicking ass, because we're treading on little brother territory with stuff like this.

College kids couldn't give a shit about the quality. It's a fashion statement.

They buy watches, yet use their cell phones to check the time. Why because it's fashionable.

So all the "the quality sucks" comments are ridiculous. Not one of them cares that he received a $150 pair of headphones that is $25 in sound quality. Not one.

I hate to say it, but it's actual a clever way to put it. LeBron gave the team headphones yes, but he was also a small owner of the company before they were purchased by Apple. Technically, it appears that the use of LeBron and Dre Beats can be used interchangibly but it looks a lot better to players and recuits to say that they were given by "LeBron" and not "Dre Beats, at the directive of partial owner LeBron James".

Like a pile. As some have pointed out, if one of our alums or boosters did this, it wouId be blasted by the NCAA. I don't personally care if anyone gives gifts to anyone else, but like most, I desire consistency in rule enforcement

This is the championship game, they've played 14 games and about to play the fifth. Participated in the most watched game ever. Comparing this to a booster doing something in the regular season is different. And I'm sure Apple did this donation for publicity and allowed LeBron to do it. TCU I received a Apple TV I believe.

From my understanding all the bowl participants get swag bags, big bags full of clothing, tech items, gift cards, etc. These are given to them as a reward via the bowl sponsor for their hard work and play. Receiving an item from an individual is a violation, I will assume they are thanking him in a way that he was involved with the swag bags. If not and it's true, and you can donate a free item that was given to you as long as it's under a certain value, open the flood gates. I'm sure there is plenty of locally owned tech stores around the country that would donate an item to a celebrity to donate to a team... 85 55 inch flat screens coming up. If there is no price limit on said donation, someone call Mr. Ford and we can hand out 85 Explorers.

Really hate saying this, Ohio State and Beats played this perfectly.  Ohio State is allowed to give gifts to players in the amount of $400, using the whole sale price.   The headphones the players recieved were roughly $150, wholesale.  Championship rings are taken from that total as well.  Beats gave the same gifts to Oregon for winning the Pac 12 championship.  However, having a spokesman who just happends to be an OSU fan, Beats and Ohio State saw this as a valuable promotion.  They followed the rules and in return Ohio State and Beats gets some free marketing from one of the biggest endorsers on the planet.  This is one of those where you hate the outcome and can only be pissed you didn't think of it.
